That Fun Reading Teacher’s Sight-Word-Stages Leveled Readers: Differentiate just by printing!

SWS intro

As educators, we have all kinds of fun activities and strategies for teaching and reinforcing sight words for reading and writing. Many of them involve practicing these words out of context. The point of Sight Word Recognition is to be able to recognize these words at a glance, in isolation. But all of the practice needn’t be.

I am in the early stages of creating a series of readers called ‘Sight Word Stages’ readers to help teachers differentiate for their students within the same reading level. While some of our students may struggle with putting all of the pieces of the reading puzzle together and need to work on that, there are many others who simply have difficulty remembering, and who require extra opportunities to practice using these little words in context.

Here is an example of a DRA/Reading Recovery Level 2 Reader:

A color PDF is included in the package, indicating the sight words of focus on the cover.

I print these on thicker paper, laminate them and keep them with other guided reading books.

A regular black and white copy is provided. Students can color and keep these, if you wish.

The Beauty of Interactive Notebooks

ELA: “MEGA POETRY UNIT : {INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK , QR CODES, EDITABLE POWERPOINT}”
By Laurane Rae@TeachToTell
Grades 3-6

Interactive notebooks templates are so versatile! Other than sharing in the commonality of being a printable with the humble worksheet, they serve to greatly economize on space.

For instance, you can scaffold teaching and learning effectively.

You can have prompts on the cover tabs followed by responses under these tabs.

Here I’ve scaffolded the structure of different poem types. Students can look at the prompts and follow along when writing their own poems.

They serve as excellent graphic organizers and effectively target kinesthetic learners with all the cutting and gluing:  active hands = active minds.

Great for Compare and Contrast features too.

And above all anything in an Interactive Notebook looks appealing!

It’s all in this bundle!

Sincerely,
Laurane Rae

Here’s what’s up with Sandra’s Savvy Teaching Tips.

Happy Saturday! I hope you’re relaxing and getting a chance to enjoy the weekend. It’s pouring rain here in Vancouver this morning, but hopefully things will dry out for my children’s baseball games this afternoon.

I had the chance to participate in a fun product swap hosted by Melissa over at Jungle Learners.

This time around I was partnered with Lisa from Second Grade Stories. I feel very lucky to have been partnered with her.  When I looked around her store, I think I wishlisted half of it.  She has a real science focus which I love.   And check out how cute her blog is.  I’m so happy that I found another great teacher-blogger to follow.

I’ve only just started using this great unit with my kiddos.  But here’s a quick summary of the great stuff included.

About this eBook

Now more than ever, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math, should be heavily emphasized in education. It is without a doubt, the base of a huge sector of our future workforce. Too often, the connection between art and these other important disciplines is overlooked. And it shouldn’t be. A creative mind is an innovative mind. Mathematicians are brilliant painters. Inventors are often great sculptors and mathematicians. Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was an Italian polymath, painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. Artists are often brilliant software designers. All of these areas should be respectively developed in our children. Let the mathematically inclined make messes and paint! Let the tinkerers experiment with musical instruments. Our next great inventions will come from today’s children. Help them develop and grow by encouraging them to be creative with art! Encourage it. It’s so good for the brain!!! It’s so good for their imaginations and goodness knows it’s fun. My point is, it’s a great outlet and enhances the other areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

This book makes it easy! Download and print the projects you wish to use. Be sure to point out the overlap of math (grid-lines and counting) with art. Thanks for purchasing my book and be sure to look for more volumes in the future.  Thanks again!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Trio of Writing Freebies”

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Trio of Writing Freebies”

by Constance D. Casserly

Grades 6-12

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Connie

With this Trio of Writing Freebies, teachers will just say, “YES!” to reinforcing proper paragraph format, to luring in readers with magnetizing hooks and to reinforcing powerful word choices.

Language Arts Comprehension Check: Ten Sentence Format

 LanguageArtsComprehensionCheckTenSentenceFormat (1)_Page_3resized

This Ten Sentence Format is perfect for clarifying and reinforcing the parts of an essay, for using as an announced or unannounced quiz when teachers of students grades 6-12 wish to check reading and writing comprehension and for general writing practice or warm-ups.

This writing format reviews and reinforces the basic structure of a paragraph: Introduction (Hook, overview, Thesis statement), Body (Main Idea, supporting details), and Conclusion (Concluding statement – thelast thought). I call this final sentence a kicker, as the last statement should end with a bang and not a whimper (thank you T.S. Eliot for this phrase).

Once students master this concept, they can easily be shown how the Main Idea paragraphs can be expanded with details and developed into more paragraphs so they can create a complete essay.

Download it from https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Language-Arts-Comprehension-CheckTen-Sentence-Format-16081

Writing (All Types) Activity: Reel in Readers With Magnetizing Hooks

writing-Reelinreaderswithmagnetizinghooks_Page_1resized

Readers are more apt to keep reading if the writer grabs their attention. Students are more apt to write with vivid verbs and specific nouns and adjectives that will snag their readers’ attention when we teachers entice them by baiting our lesson plan hooks with a multitude of opportunities for them to own their writing.

When we do this, our students will become emotionally involved with their writing and will understand that the lead sentences act as a fishing hook, and every word that forms them is the bait. They will learn that the hook has one main purpose: luring readers to the writer’s world.

Not only will they hook their readers, but they will also capture the interest of the people who rate their standardized test writing responses. Most importantly, though, they will embrace writing because they are Writing Right.

Writing – “Just Say, ‘NO!’ to Dull Writing”

WritingJustSayNOtoDullWriting_Page_1resized

This year-long activity was always one of my core Middle and High School lesson plans. On the first day of school, I  handed it out to my students right after we reviewed the syllabus and classroom rules and expectations.

I explained to my charges that they were required to refer to it for any writing-graded or non-graded – throughout the year. Also,  I made a poster of it to hang in the classroom and I taped a copy of the list to each desk for continual writing reinforcement.

Olga, a former student who is now a senior in college, asked me to send it to her because she was tutoring at a Virginia university’s writing center. She said, “I have to do a presentation on making writing concise and precise. Would you send me a copy of your taboo words list please? It has been – and will continue to be – the best advice on writing well that I’ve found.”

When this Taboo Words and Phrases List impacts your students’ thinking and writing, it will become a lifelong tool for them,  just as it has been for Olga.

Download it from  https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Writing-Just-Say-NO-to-Dull-Writing-1555338

Give yourselves the gift of time and relax, knowing that this triple play of lessons lessons will review and reinforce the effective writing that you have been teaching them all year. If you are asked, “Are your students ready for the  standardized tests?” you can smile and say, “They are ready to hit home runs”.

Enjoy a Teach IT Now Day, every day,

Connie

It is such a joy to read feedback from teachers who are using my resources in their classrooms. I read every piece of feedback and am constantly learning from you all how to better my products. I appreciate you all more than you could know!

How to Hone a “Soft Skill” (& a GIVEAWAY – Read On)

This week the Sharing is Caring Elite Blogging Cooperative is blogging on this week’s topic “Incorporating Soft Skills Into the Classroom.”

sharingblog

If you haven’t heard the phrase “soft skills” (I had to look that one up) basically it means, how to you teach that stuff students aren’t assessed on in class. We used to call them social skills, manners, etc… Now it includes a bit more like how to handle a bully, and what to do in an emergency.

These soft skills may be the most important things you actually teacher students this year. More than how well they read, how well they can navigate various social situations (Sometimes referred to as emotional or social intelligence), predicts how successful students are in their future lives.

Want to read about social Intelligence? Check out these sites (Yes I know Forbes isn’t a research magazine – but employers read it and they are learning what to look for in an employee of the future):

Ok, So how do we teach soft skill in the classroom, when we have no time set specifically aside to do so?

In many schools (mine, my children’s, their grandmother’s to name a few) PBIS has become the norm. What it essentially amounts to is using loads of positive praise in the classroom daily to focus students in on what behaviors we want to teach. Schools tend to adopt school wide behavior incentives, such as praise tickets, used to purchase prizes in a school store, or admission to a fun event at the school. Teachers (or teaching teams) are often left to devise their own in class rewards and incentives. Read On
