Speech Therapy; Grades K-4

Using storybooks in speech and language therapy allows us to target meaningful vocabulary and language objectives within the context of literature and well-constructed narratives. This book, “They All Saw A CAT” is great for building descriptive language skills and talking about point of view. It is a lot of fun to help kids see how the cat is viewed by each of the other animals – bigger, smaller, mean, furry.  Included in the project is a lesson plan for multiple days’ worth of activities. Use the book for up to 4 sessions; Matching cards for playing a Memory-type game; match the animal with how it saw the cat; 3 matching worksheets for matching the animal with how it saw the cat; Mix & match puzzles; and much more.  See the full details on the product page!

All Subject Areas; Grades PreK-6

Integrate geography, math, and writing activities using Edith Baer’s book, This Is the Way We Go to SchoolStudents learn about the different ways kids around the world go to school, and use a world map to locate each place. The class creates a tally chart and a bar graph to show how they all get to school. Questions for analyzing the data are included. Students complete a descriptive writing prompt sharing a new way to get to school – fun for sharing and/or making a class book.

Free Easy Student Product Activity Page for Open House

Looking for some great student products for your Open House display?

I’ve got a great math-related activity to share with you! This activity is one that I have used to create a cover page in students’ math notebooks, but it’s such a fun activity that it makes for a great display for Open House or Back to School Night. It’s also a fun way to show students how they can communicate with numbers and an opportunity for students to get creative and show off their individual style.

I give students a guideline for how to format the page and a list of statements to get them started (see below), but the creativity level is left entirely to them.
As an optional way to present the numbers, you can have students write them in one of the following formats:
* expanded notation- (Example: 10,000 x 1 + 1,000 x 3 + 100 x 5 + 10 x 6 + 1 x 8 days on Earth.)
* expanded form- (Example: I traveled 1000 + 200 + 70 + 8 miles to the beach this summer.)
* mathematical expressions- (Example: My birthday is on the (75 + 30)th day of the year.)

Thesis Writing Activity

Product Description

We all know that the thesis statement is the most important part of the essay. This is also the part of the essay with which students have the most difficulty.

When you are able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a work, you are able to write better yourself.

Topic: Is knowledge good or destructive? The subject is interesting, and can be used along with many different types of literature, or on its own.

In this bundle, I’ve included an interactive PowerPoint presentation that includes the following:

-The definition of a thesis statement
-How to write a thesis statement (and the steps to take leading up to the thesis)
-5 examples of thesis statements, where students must identify both the weaknesses and the strengths
-10 slides explaining the strengths in the examples and the weaknesses in the examples
-1 example of a well-written thesis statement, and an explanation about why it’s good.

To accompany the PowerPoint presentation, I’ve included a student activity sheet with a list of all of the examples written in the PPT. (PDF format)

Also included is a lesson plan with details regarding the PowerPoint and activity sheet.

As a bonus, I’ve also included 2 posters listing the 7 essential steps to writing a great thesis. I’ve included an image format and a PDF format for easy printing.

-the first poster measures 70 cm (27.6 inches)
-the second poster, which students can actually read from far away, measures 97 cm (38.2 inches)

Spelling Flip Book

Product Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flip book when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

It’s teaching made easy!

Senior Language Arts Learning Goals Posters

Product Description

Senior Language Arts Learning Goals Poster

Learning goals are important for our students’ education and learning. When we have a goal in mind when teaching, everything else serves a specific purpose, and everything seems to fall into place. As teachers, we are asked to display these learning goals in our classroom, but for me, this wasn’t possible.

With 30 plus students in my class, I didn’t have time to write my learning goals on chart paper or display them on the board. Hmmm… what’s a girl to do?

I created these posters to make my life, as well as yours, easier. This bundle offers ALL of the senior, (grade 12) goals and is in line with the Common Core as well as the Canadian curriculums.

The bundle includes:

A 14-page checklist of all of the learning goals, which can help the teacher keep track of what’s been covered and what hasn’t.

55 Learning Goal posters (8×11) that can easily be posted on the bulletin board or the chalkboard at the front of the class.

These posters allow students to track learn the focus of the lesson.

Three strands are covered: (with the focus of each poster clearly indicated)
1) Reading and Interpretation
2) Writing and Representation
3) Oral and Oral-Visual Communication

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Following Written Directions: Discussion, Assignment, Rubric”

by Jessica Osborne

4th – 7th Grade

Following written directions is a crucial concept for students. Sometimes they get so distracted by the end goal of a project they are creating, or even by what they are learning, that they forget to focus on reading and following the directions carefully. This often results in them getting a lower grade than they should, or them not being able to display what they truly know about a subject. This assignment reminds them of the importance of reading every word carefully in a set of directions.

Students will carefully follow a set of written directions to complete a task and create an exact design on a page. Then, they will trade papers with a partner, and the teacher will lead the class through grading the assignment on the rubric, checking to see that everyone followed the directions carefully. They will each instantly see how well they did, and questions are provided for the teacher to lead the class in a thorough discussion about the importance of following written directions.

This activity is great to do at the beginning of the school year to set expectations or anytime the students need a reminder to follow directions carefully. Throughout the year if they are falling into bad habits, you may be able to refer back to this activity to jog their memory, or repeat the activity at anytime.

INCLUDES:
-Detailed Teacher Directions & Discussion Questions
-Photo Example
-Student Instruction Page
-Student Rubric

The way I use this resource…
In writing, I scaffold and model information to my students. Each class is different and each year is different; therefore, I can’t do everything the same each time I teach the same subject. I start with the basic rubric and introduce 1-3 new concepts each essay. Once I introduce a concept, I hold students accountable for the concepts I taught. If it appears that the majority of the class does not understand the concept, I do not hold them accountable and I reteach the concept. I try not to stifle their creativity by focusing on spelling, capitalization, and punctuation during the first two terms of school depending on the class. I also can easily use the 6 traits of writing with the rubrics. Make sure you choose a topic that is relevant, relatable, and the reasons are researchable.
When filling out the rubric, simply circle the number(s) the student(s) earned. The outline and graphic organizers are an optional teaching tool to help the students organize their thoughts. Depending on the class, I may start the school year off by requiring a 3 paragraph essay then work our way up to a 7 paragraph essay.
Next, I introduce the peer editing checklist. I have students pair up and exchange papers. I have clipboards students can use while they sit around the room for this activity. It’s important for you to model for the students how to peer edit. Many times students just want to be nice and not give feedback. However, this is a great opportunity for students to read each others essays and learn from each other. I try not to let the same students peer edit with each other every time in order for students to view a variety of styles over the school year.
Additionally, there is a student self-assessment included. This is a good tool to help students understand how they are being graded and reflect on his or her own writing. The self-assessment should be completed after the peer editing checklist if it was purchased.
When the class is ready (score 80% or higher), I introduce the advanced rubric to step it up a notch. The thesis statement is used in the advanced rubric. If needed, students can still use the basic rubric for their level for individualized instruction.
Furthermore, there are 18 rubrics in all (basic and advanced) for 3, 4, 5, and 7 paragraph essays. You can choose with or without extra credit. The way I use the parent signature for extra credit is that the parent can sign anywhere on the paper or rubric. I let parents and students know to look over their child’s paper and write directly on the final copy to fix any errors. There is only one rubric in basic and advanced that has the parent signature because it may not work for your classroom.
Finally, you are able to print front and back! Then you can cut them in half to save on paper. For example, pages 12 and 13 are the same rubric. Simply print it from your computer or printer as two-sided. If this does not work for you, print the first rubric for a full page rubric.
Happy Teaching!
Sally
