FREE Reasoning About Fractions Activity

Do your students need help understanding fractions?
In the 1980s, A&W, an American restaurant chain, unveiled a new menu item– a third of a pound burger meant to rival McDonald’s popular Quarter Pounder. After creating an expensive marketing campaign and a fan-fare filled roll-out, the A&W third-pound burger failed. It was only after soliciting feedback from their focus groups that A&W executives began to understand why. The American public believed the third-pound burger to be smaller than McDonald’s quarter pound burger. Misunderstanding the four in one-fourth to be larger than the three in one-third caused Americans to believe that A&W was cheating them out of their money by charging a price for the burger that did not equal the value.

This story speaks volumes about how fractions are perceived by students and adults alike. It’s important that our students learn to understand fractions in the same way that they understand numbers in other forms.

This activity focuses on comparing fractions by reasoning about their sizes. Development of this skill begins with a conceptual model. When presented with a variety of visual fractions, students begin to understand that the more pieces the whole is partitioned into, the smaller the value of each piece.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Christmas Place Value 100s Chart Mystery Picture Activity Freebie”

by Kiddos and Crayons by Jordan Piacenti

1st – 2nd Grade

Practice place value with a fun Christmas themed puzzle. Students will practice place value by identifying numbers through base ten blocks, expanded form and tens and ones on their answer sheets. Then, they use their answers to color a 100s chart to reveal the mystery picture (santa).

Each worksheet shows a two digit number in either expanded form, word form (i.e. 6 tens and 5 ones) or as picture of tens and ones blocks. After students solve the problem and write the correct number on their worksheet, they find the number on a blank 100s chart and color it a specified color. When they are done they will have revealed a fun mystery picture.

This activity works great as a math center or a fast finisher. It can also be used as a whole group listening activity by having the teacher call out the number of tens and ones for each problem.

Paragraph Writing Activity in conjunction with Frankenstein

Paragraph Writing Activity in conjunction with Frankenstein

Product Description

Paragraph Writing Activity in conjunction with Frankenstein

Very often, students have difficulty with the analysis process involved in literature. Where they not only have to analyse, but now have to apply their newfound skills to a well-developed paragraph, some students become overwhelmed with the process.

This particular activity will focus on both the analysis and writing a paragraph using the PEEL method.

Paragraph writing and analysis are two essential components in essay writing. To facilitate this process, I have created a lesson where students can become more comfortable with the revision process through modelling the proper steps from beginning to end. The lesson includes a modelling of the writing process from understanding the topic to the final draft. See preview for details

This lesson can only be used after students have read chapter 19 from the novel Frankenstein.

Classroom Rules Poster and Instructions

Product Description
Free Classroom Rules Poster and Instructions

It sounds very idealistic to say this, but it’s true. From personal experience, I assure you that simplifying your rules will simplify your life.

At the beginning of the school year, when it’s time to introduce the class rules I show students this poster and read the three words. Then, using the Socratic method of questioning I go through the rules one by one and discuss the implications of those rules (which is the reason you don’t need many.)

Spelling Flip Book

Spelling Flip Book

Product Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flip book when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.
