Analyze This! A Step-by-Step Guide to Analysis

Product Description

Analyze This! is a step-by-step guide to analyzing literature

I created this bundle to help my students understand analysis and how to apply their newfound skills to write an effective essay.

The bundle includes:
– A page with suggestions on how to use the bundle
– Two pages explaining the difference between analysis and literary analysis
– One page on how to create an effective outline (what content should be included)
– An exercise using the “Ant and the Grasshopper” fable to help students analyze elements of plot, characterization, symbolism, theme, and setting.
– An answer sheet with detailed information
– Instructions on how to use the above information to focus a topic and write a thesis statement
– An outline activity – students need to complete an outline using a given thesis statement
– An answer key (with a possible outline) to help student compare their outline with this one.
The bundle includes 13 pages and two to three days worth of lessons.
This is a practical and simple way to guide students through the analytical process.

It’s teaching made easy!

Poetry Unit (for senior students)

Poetry Unit (for senior students)

Product Description

Poetry Unit for Senior Students (Bundled)

I love poetry! I love reading it, I love teaching it, and I love the discussions I can have with my students because of it. May students (and some teachers) dislike poetry because they think it’s too difficult. I once had a student tell me that poetry was like a “code” that needed to be unlocked. Cringe!! Some poems are meant to be analyzed. Some poems and meant to sound beautiful, and some poems are meant to be simple and enjoyed for what they are. This unit has a little of all of those things.

Students love this poetry unit. It is a complete unit with no prep required on the teacher’s part. This 2 and a half week unit includes a student guide, 12 detailed lesson plans, two multimedia presentations (no internet connection required), a complete answer key with annotated poems (this is a teacher favorite!) , and an end of the unit evaluation with answer key.

Just print it and teach it. It really is that easy.

This bundle includes individual lessons devised to teach students the importance of:

• Figurative language (its uses and effects)
• How to read poetry
• How to understand and apply symbolism and imagery
• The importance of rhythm
• The importance of tone and attitude in a poem
• Types of poetry
• How to analyze poetry
• How to appreciate poetry (even when you don’t understand it)
• Includes some Canadian poetry

This unit’s focus is the analysis of poetry and teaches students how to make inferences, which is a skill they must learn for their other subjects as well.

Poems include authors such as Emily Dickenson, Dorothy Parker, Maya Angelou, Thomas Gray, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Alfred Noyes, T.S. Eliot, Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Frost, Pearl Jam, Langston Hughes, Margaret Atwood, and Walt Whitman. The Unit includes 21 different poems.

The unit has been conceived to last 15 days – with 65 minute periods (although they are easy to modify).

The unit includes:

1 – The teacher guide (Contains 12 comprehensive lesson plans to teach the poems included in the unit. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO TEACH THIS UNIT HAS BEEN DONE FOR YOU. )

2 – The student package (Contains students’ notes, poems, and questions) (28 pages)

3 – The answer key includes annotated poems and answers to all student activities, as well as an example of paragraph developing a theme in poetry (saving you time).

4 – Included is a test with multiple choice questions as well as one development question. All answers are included. (Word format for easy changes)

5 – 2 PowerPoint presentations – one multimedia presentation to introduce the unit (17 slides) and the second to reinforce the use of imagery and symbolism (19 slides) – NO INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED

A total of 68 pages + 36 slides are included in this package.

This unit is complete and does all of the thinking for you. All you need to do is to print out and photocopy the student package, and you’re set.

Check out these individual lessons from the unit:
Poetry and Imagery – Langston Hughes
Tone in poetry – Robert Frost

Parts of Speech Grammar Circles (Superhero Themed)

Product Description

Superhero themed Parts of speech Grammar Circle Unit

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit grammar in with everything else I had to teach. I would give students grammar pages, and then we would correct them together. It was tedious, and it took forever! What’s more is that students were not learning the way I wanted them to. They wouldn’t apply what they had learned from the grammar pages and activities.

I found a solution!

Grammar Circles. Grammar Circles are very similar to literature circles in the sense that students are teaching one another grammar. It is a fun and functional way to teach and Learn grammar. Although this may be done individually, it can also be completed as a group where students, through a specific process outlined in the package, teach one another grammar. They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do other than to facilitate and supervise.

Once these circles have been implemented and students know who their group members are and what they are supposed to do, it is a great prep to leave a supply teacher.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes, and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (27 pages)

Activities included focus on:

-nouns
-adjectives
-verbs
-adverbs
-prepositions
-conjunctions
-putting in all together
-correct use of pronouns
-who and whom
-that and which
-who’s and whose
-that and who
-pronoun case
-pronoun agreement
-active and passive voice
-verb tenses (present, past, future)
-verb uses (consistency in verb tenses)

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their work and learn from one another.

Also included are free Superhero Themed Parts of Speech Posters to decorate your class.

For those who are from Ontario, Canada – this unit adheres to the Grade 9 English Curriculum (academic). The unit can be taught in any grade to learn parts of speech.

(51 pages total for this unit)

What Would You Do? Moral Discernment Activity FREE

Product Description

Although I use this activity in my religion class (during my free will unit), it can also be used in conjunction with many other subjects.

When I have an extra 10 or 15 minutes, I show my students a “What Would You Do?” episode (found on Youtube).

To help with our class discussions, I ask students to complete the “What Would You Do?” question sheet, which uses the steps of moral decision making. All sorts of subjects can be discussed thanks to this activity.

WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY, YOU CAN STILL USE THIS GAME, YOU JUST WON’T BE ABLE TO HAVE YOUR STUDENTS FILL IN THE GOOGLE FORM, INSTEAD YOU’D USE THE RECORDING SHEET AND CHECK THEIR ANSWERS USING THE ANSWER KEY PROVIDED. YOU’D TELL YOUR STUDENTS IF THEY CAN ADVANCE TO THE NEXT LEVEL OR IF THEY NEED TO GO BACK AND FIX SOME ANSWERS.

****IF YOU’D LIKE TO USE THE GOOGLE FORM, THEN this interactive escape room requires technology. Students will need to access a Google Form, so any technology that allows them to access and complete a Google Form will work!*****

FREE: Thanksgiving Fix it Up Sentences (Capital Letters & Ending Punctuation) —

This activity is connected to the CCGPS ELACCKL2a,b. Capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I and recognize and name ending punctuation. This is a one page Thanksgiving FREEBIE. It has a simple story including five sentences. The sentences are not written correctly. The first letter in each sentence is not capital, important names are not capitalized, and the ending punctuation is missing. Have your students rewrite each sentence correctly. Begin each sentence and important names with a capital letter and add the correct ending punctuation. The sentences used contain frequently used sight words and other decodable words that students should be able to read. These activities are great for morning work, literacy centers, or for a quick mini lesson on including capital letters and ending punctuation in sentences. Students can read the story to a partner or to the teacher after correcting the sentences. Students could also add other details to the story using the back of their paper.

Pre-Kindergarten – 12th Grade

Aardvarks Clip Art And Reading Pack has 32 public domain images of aardvarks. There are color photos and black and white drawings. Insofar as instructions or suggestions go, you can enlarge or shrink the public domain images’ sizes, move the images around, etc. The images are handy for any classroom (Pre-K through higher ed) and any age or ability level but teachers of art and natural studies in science will likely regard them as being of special interest. Teachers of Pre-K students up will find them handy for using as reward stickers, for classroom décor, etc.

Sources for the aardvark public domain clip art here and in other similar publications include wpclipart.com, clker.com, wikipedia.org, plates from the 1800s works of John Gould, John James Audubon, various federal government agencies, and a few from myself. To summarize:

Contents: Aardvark Images (32, public domain); Quick Facts About Ardvaarks in first English then non-Castillian, Latin American Spanish which should help Spanish-speaking students in regular classes or ESL; Aardvark In Multiple Languages; Aardvark Board Game Template (similar to Candyland or Aggravation); 20 Ways To Teach With Clip Art About Aardvarks Etc; Details For Educational Games (including for teaching about aardvarks; Aardvarks Word Search; Answers Key For Aardvarks Word Search; True-False Test About Aardvarks.

If you don’t have ELL’s now, then you may later. This is dedicated to my wife Barbara, a science teacher for 28 years.

by Pirate Queen Teaching Treasures

2nd – 4th Grade

How can you use Jane Yolen’s book, WHAT TO DO WITH A BOX, to stimulate imagination inside and outside of your classroom? Use this FREEBIE in a number of ways to inspire imagination. As a read-aloud it can trigger memories and lead to a discussion about imaginary play which can inspire imaginative writing.

This product will help you to make the most of your read-aloud. Four words from the book can be used for vocabulary study. Students are provided with a word list and are encouraged to draw pictures that illustrate the meaning of each word. There are Word Wall cards to post for continuous review. A circle map can be used after the reading to brainstorm and list imaginary ways to use a box.

There are two narrative organizers, a tree map for story elements and a flow map for narrative events. Either is a tool for students to outline their imaginative narratives for using a box. Final copy recording sheets are available as well as a Narrative Scoring Checklist that lists what is expected in the writing.

A second writing activity is to compose an additional stanza to Yolen’s poem. Again, final copy recording sheets are provided.

Rhythm in Poetry – A Complete Lesson

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Rhythm-in-Poetry-A-Complete-Lesson-1177410

Rhythm in Poetry - A Complete Lesson

Product Description

Teach students the importance of rhythm in poetry.

This lesson includes Emily Dickenson’s “If I Could Not Stop for Death” as well as Pearl Jam’s “Last Kiss” lyrics to discover (hands-on) the importance of rhythm in poetry. Often, Language Arts teachers are weaker in this area because it is a little more technical than merely looking at the language.

The lesson includes:
– a detailed lesson plan for the teacher
– student notes (the poems) and activities
– an annotated copy of the poems as well as a comprehensive answer key

The entire unit contains 6 pages and it will most likely take two periods to complete.

This lesson is part of a larger unit:
