We Teach So Hard…Episode 12 Halloween Horror or Heaven?

Halloween is often a teacher’s personal horror story! LOL! We, at WE TEACH SO HARD, feel the pain, because we’re here in the trenches with you…scavenging the aisles of Target the night before for a costume that isn’t sexy…binging on the chocolate you bought for your students…watching the room parents take over…all on a full moon! We raise our pumpkin spice latte in empathy, sympathy and solidarity!

So, come laugh and plan your Halloween survival strategies with us at We Teach So Hard. We’ve got you covered with some funny stories and expert tips!

Free: What Would You Do? Moral Discernment Activity

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/What-Would-You-Do-Moral-Discernment-Activity-FREE-2213425

What Would You Do? Moral Discernment Activity FREE

Product Description

Although I use this activity in my religion class (during my free will unit), it can also be used in conjunction with many other subjects.

When I have an extra 10 or 15 minutes, I show my students a “What Would You Do?” episode (found on Youtube).

To help with our class discussions, I ask students to complete the “What Would You Do?” question sheet, which uses the steps of moral decision making. All sorts of subjects can be discussed thanks to this activity.

I hope you enjoy it.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Escape Room FREEBIE – Rounding, Addition, and Subtraction”

by Third Grade Triumph

3rd – 4th Grade

Try out this Escape Room in your classroom for FREE. It’s a small sample of how my Escapes work. Try it out today! Leave feedback below! Thank you! Also, don’t forget to connect on Instagram and Pinterest, too!

After visiting the Ron Clark Academy (RCA), which if you haven’t had the opportunity to do so, I highly suggest it! It’s an AMAZING experience and really life-changing. I saw this concept used there, so I adapted it and changed it for my classroom. My students are always begging me to play this!

THIS ESCAPE NOW INCLUDES A RECORDING SHEET AND MINI SHEETS SO TECHNOLOGY IS NOT REQUIRED TO PLAY. WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY, YOU CAN STILL USE THIS GAME, YOU JUST WON’T BE ABLE TO HAVE YOUR STUDENTS FILL IN THE GOOGLE FORM, INSTEAD YOU’D USE THE RECORDING SHEET AND CHECK THEIR ANSWERS USING THE ANSWER KEY PROVIDED. YOU’D TELL YOUR STUDENTS IF THEY CAN ADVANCE TO THE NEXT LEVEL OR IF THEY NEED TO GO BACK AND FIX SOME ANSWERS.

****IF YOU’D LIKE TO USE THE GOOGLE FORM, THEN this interactive escape room requires technology. Students will need to access a Google Form, so any technology that allows them to access and complete a Google Form will work!*****

Level 1

Students will solve addition and subtraction equations relating to CCSS 3.NBT.2

Level 2

Students will answer rounding questions relating to CCSS 3.NBT.1

Level 3

Students will answer questions about place value relating to CCSS 3.NBT.1

This is a great way to review all the rounding, place value, and addition/subtraction content you’ve taught in 3rd grade or a great way to review for 4th graders. Make the days leading up to your assessment fun with this rigorous and engaging math review.

Poetry Through Song - A No Prep Unit

Product Description

Teach the art of poetry through song lyrics

I love teaching poetry! I love it when my student like learning it too.

So many students dislike poetry that I wanted to create a unit just for them. This unit takes a different approach to teaching poetry all while allowing students to be critical of the songs they hear on the radio. This unit teaches the same skills as traditional poetry units do, but does it more lightly.

Take a look at what is included in this bundle:

An introductory video on how to approach poetry throughout the unit see video here Poetry Through Song Introduction Video

A Figurative Language Bingo Game to make learning and reviewing figurative language more fun.

The Teacher Guide includes 13 complete lessons focusing on and building on specific skills with each lesson

The Student Guide includes the following:

-notes on how to approach poetry

-notes on poetic devices and figurative language

– A copy of the following songs: Malibu, Roar, Scars to your Beautiful, Golden Leaves, Sound of Silence, There were Roses, The Cave, Something Just Like This, and Lost Boy. A wide variety of songs are included.

-Activities accompany every song (Theme and meaning, historical and literary allusions, the meaning of pronouns, Thematic connection exercises, video comparison activity, fun with allusions, fun with metaphors, fun with idioms, and much more.) See the preview for more details.

The Answer Key includes the answers to all questions and activities and comes with detailed annotations of each poem.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE DOWNLOAD : Thanksgiving FREEBIE”

by Sherry Clements

Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

FREE: Thanksgiving Fix it Up Sentences (Capital Letters & Ending Punctuation) —

This activity is connected to the CCGPS ELACCKL2a,b. Capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I and recognize and name ending punctuation. This is a one page Thanksgiving FREEBIE. It has a simple story including five sentences. The sentences are not written correctly. The first letter in each sentence is not capital, important names are not capitalized, and the ending punctuation is missing. Have your students rewrite each sentence correctly. Begin each sentence and important names with a capital letter and add the correct ending punctuation. The sentences used contain frequently used sight words and other decodable words that students should be able to read. These activities are great for morning work, literacy centers, or for a quick mini lesson on including capital letters and ending punctuation in sentences. Students can read the story to a partner or to the teacher after correcting the sentences. Students could also add other details to the story using the back of their paper.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoy this FREEBIE. Please take just one moment to leave me some feedback. I really appreciate your comments! Come back and get the rest of my freebies. I hope you can use some or ALL of them in your classroom.

by J MASON EMERSON

Pre-Kindergarten – 12th Grade

Aardvarks Clip Art And Reading Pack has 32 public domain images of aardvarks. There are color photos and black and white drawings. Insofar as instructions or suggestions go, you can enlarge or shrink the public domain images’ sizes, move the images around, etc. The images are handy for any classroom (Pre-K through higher ed) and any age or ability level but teachers of art and natural studies in science will likely regard them as being of special interest. Teachers of Pre-K students up will find them handy for using as reward stickers, for classroom décor, etc.

Sources for the aardvark public domain clip art here and in other similar publications include wpclipart.com, clker.com, wikipedia.org, plates from the 1800s works of John Gould, John James Audubon, various federal government agencies, and a few from myself. To summarize:

Contents: Aardvark Images (32, public domain); Quick Facts About Ardvaarks in first English then non-Castillian, Latin American Spanish which should help Spanish-speaking students in regular classes or ESL; Aardvark In Multiple Languages; Aardvark Board Game Template (similar to Candyland or Aggravation); 20 Ways To Teach With Clip Art About Aardvarks Etc; Details For Educational Games (including for teaching about aardvarks; Aardvarks Word Search; Answers Key For Aardvarks Word Search; True-False Test About Aardvarks.

Rhythm in Poetry - A Complete Lesson

Product Description

Teach students the importance of rhythm in poetry.

This lesson includes Emily Dickenson’s “If I Could Not Stop for Death” as well as Pearl Jam’s “Last Kiss” lyrics to discover (hands-on) the importance of rhythm in poetry. Often, Language Arts teachers are weaker in this area because it is a little more technical than merely looking at the language.

The lesson includes:
– a detailed lesson plan for the teacher
– student notes (the poems) and activities
– an annotated copy of the poems as well as a comprehensive answer key

The entire unit contains 6 pages and it will most likely take two periods to complete.

This lesson is part of a larger unit:

Poetry Unit for Intermediate Students

Product Description

2 weeks of thinking done for you. This unit is appropriate for grades 9 and 10

Looking for a meaningful and effective way to teach poetry? This unit is a fun way to learn and experiment with figurative language. It uses a mixture of contemporary songs and traditional poetry to teach students about themes and to help them learn the various forms of poetry. The creative, hands-on activities also focus on the importance of having a voice and using it properly. I use this with my grade 9 students to expose them to poetic language and different types of poetry, but also to get them thinking of theme in terms of being courageous and standing up for what you believe. All poem deal with similar themes to help students understand that poetry gives us a voice. Our words have power. They have the power to heal, and they have the power to hurt, which means that we have a choice to make.
The unit covers subjects such as bullying, courage, standing up for yourself and others, standing up for one’s convictions and discovering what is important to students. You will have some very thought-provoking discussions with students.
This unit uses poetry to help students have a better understanding of themselves and to stand up for things they believe in.

The files are in PDF format and are zipped for convenience.

-1 set of « I HAVE, Who has? » cards to help students remember figurative language in a fun way. (1 set of instructions for the game)

-A comprehensive teacher guide with 11 complete and detailed lessons (no prep required) – (8 pages) – EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO TEACH THIS UNIT HAS BEEN DONE FOR YOU

-A student package that contains ALL notes, poems, and handouts students will need for the unit (18 pages)

-An end unit evaluation (with detailed evaluation rubrics and step by step instructions for students – one for the written component and one for the oral component). The end unit evaluation is in Word format along with the evaluation rubric for easy modifications. The final unit evaluation is a written poem and poetry reading, where students’ voices can be heard.

-A detailed Answer Key with notes, annotated poems, and answers to questions and activities. (8 pages)

Poems studied include:
– Song lyrics – Jessie J’s “Domino” (Goal: review figurative language and analyze messages found in popular media.)
– Jonathan Reed’s “The Lost Generation”
– Selena Matis’ “Ability”
– Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”
– Robert Hayden’s “ Those Winter Sundays”
– Song lyrics “True Colors”
– Emily Dickenson’s “Hope is the Thing with Feathers”

Thesis Writing Poster

Product Description

As any English teacher can tell you, the thesis statement is the most important part of the essay. It defines the arguments and orients the reader. Unfortunately, many students have difficulty with the thesis statement. This is why I have created the “7 Steps to Writing an Effective Thesis Statement” poster.

The poster is a step by step guide on how to write the thesis starting with selecting a topic the student understands and walks them through the process until the end.

I am making the poster available in different formats for facility of use in the classroom:

– The first format measures 70 cm (27.6 inches) (easy printing) PDF
– The second format measure 97 cm (38.2) – information can be more easily read from further away (easy printing) PDF
– One smaller poster PDF
– An image format JPEG
