Evaluating a Fish bowl Activity in a Literature Circle

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Evaluating-a-Fish-bowl-Activity-in-a-Literature-Circle-694363

Evaluating a Fish bowl Activity in a Literature Circle

Product Description

The Fishbowl activity is mostly useful during literature circles or in a novel study. Quite literally, the group in the center is being watched by the rest of the class, while they are discussing elements of fiction. This activity is a very important tool in order to teach students how group discussions should run, what is to be said, and how it is to be said. Many times the leader of the discussion doesn’t know how to prompt members to elaborate upon their contributions. This will certainly help.

In addition, it is often difficult for a teacher to evaluate these discussions, which is the reason I have created this package. It is easy to use and you can merely check boxes to quickly assess each member of the groups.

This package contains:
• An explanation of The Fishbowl Activity
• How to run a Fishbowl Activity (within the realm of a literature circle)
• Why such an activity is important
• Evaluation sheets one can use to easily evaluate the discussions and roles of students

Finding Life Mentors in Mentor Texts
I’ve been thinking a lot about mentor text lately. Mentor Text. Another piece of education-speak. Sounds official, important, and perhaps a bit daunting for a new teacher or a seasoned one like me, who may not have attended a training or researched  the term. The first time I heard the term, it sent me running to Google for a definition. I found that mentor text is a piece of literature that teachers and students can study, imitate, and apply to other texts and for different purposes.

Within Within (Words Within Words)

The beauty of spelling with letter tiles is that the “outcome” isn’t permanent. Kids aren’t afraid to stretch their spelling acumen by experimenting with letter tiles. Students hear teachers say “Mistakes are OK, you learn from your mistakes.” We all know that’s true and we wish to impart this wisdom to the children, in the hopes that they will embrace this perspective. However, kids still don’t like to make mistakes. With tiles it’s different. Tile spelling seems more like play, and the letters are easily moved to make adjustments to correct a word.

Sock It Away! What to do with Those Annoying Cell Phones in the Classroom

Most of us can’t live without our cell phones. Unfortunately, neither can our students. I teach on the college level, and my syllabus states that all cell phones are to be put on “silent” or turned off when class is in session. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Yet, one of the most common sounds in today’s classrooms is the ringing of a cell phone, often accompanied by some ridiculous tune or sound effect that broadcasts to everyone a call is coming in. What can a teacher do?

We Teach So Hard…Episode #6…Building Relationships 101

In this latest episode of WE TEACH SO HARD, we explore ways to build relationships with parents and students and share some humor along the way. Give it a listen for some tips and tricks to make your start to the school year smooth one.

I had to miss recording this podcast so I wanna share some advice from my many years, on the front lines, as a middle school teacher.  The kids are a different breed, pubescent, beautiful, intelligent, wonderful to teach, great sense of humor, with one foot in childhood and the other in adolescence. Once those hormones take over, teaching them becomes more of a challenge.

  • Have morning meetings, many children come from conflicted homes and just need time to get things off their chests.
  • Once they’re able to say what’s on their minds, most will be able to get to work.
  • Talk to them, be humanistic, use humor and be able to laugh at yourself, if you make mistake admit to it, they’ll realize everyone makes mistakes and that’s ok.
  • Find the time to talk to them. It will help you understand what makes them tick. I spent time during home room chatting with each student. It means the world to them and they’ll remember you for it.
  • Keep in contact with parents, let them know that you truly care for their child, and are there for them. #halfthebattleiswon
  • Be  yourself when speaking with parents, joke with them, it breaks the ice. Let them see your true personality as well as your humanity.
  • This is a biggee!!! If you have something negative to say about Johnny, begin with the positive and end with a positive. It’ll make parents feel a little better and they’ll respect what you have to say much more. Best of all, you’ll be working as a team for the betterment of their child.
  • When you need help with something, ask the parents, they’ll be there with bells on. When my students wrote and performed Greek plays, parents helped with costumes/scenery. annnd of course loved seeing their child’s performance.
  • If a parent gets angry and says something you don’t like, don’t react with anger. Take a deep breath, answer calmly and honestly.  I know, I know, sometimes you just wanna use some 4 letter words and tell them off, but don’t do it!

Here’s a link to our podcast on iTunes.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE Book Review Labels/Inserts: Classroom Library and More!”

by Secondary Sara

1st – 12th Grade

Give your classroom library a word-of-mouth makeover, and give students ownership of recommending (and choosing) their own books!

The template makes labels that fit inside the cover of almost any paperback or hardcover novel. (When cut out, it is approximately 3.5×6”, and I haven’t had trouble taping it inside even my small paperbacks so far!)

The form is quick and easy for students to fill out, and it tells students what they REALLY want to know about a book before they begin reading, including difficulty level, whether or not it’s engaging, and if the book is “worth it”.

BONUS: You also get a blank template in case you want to rate books with a different scale or ask different questions! 🙂
