FREE MATH LESSON – “Interactive PowerPoint Counting by 10’s with Crayons and Kids”

Do you need an activity for practicing counting by 10’s? This self correcting, interactive PowerPoint slide show with sound effects.

Open the zipped file, the file named Directions has a printable recording sheet and answer key. The interactive game is the file named Counting by 10’s with Crayons and Kids.

Students will click on a random symbol on the home page and be taken to a slide on which they must answer the question, “How Many?” counting groups of ten. Students will count by 10’s, record their answer, and check their work by clicking their answer choice on the slide. If the student clicks on a correct answer, a slide with “Way to Go!” will pop up and the student will hear applause. If the student clicks on an incorrect answer a slide with “Oops Better Luck Next Time” will pop up and the student will hear a breaking glass sound effect.

Students can tally correct answers on the points slide that you project on a whiteboard if you wish, or you can copy the black and white points slide. The point sheet is designed to be used with teams of four, or four teams when using the game with the whole class. Tallying points is optional of course.

Dice, Fingers, Tally Marks, Ten Frame, Ordinals, Counting Kids, Number Line, Coins, Number Formation, Formation Poem, Number Word, and Counting Cubes

Directions:
Run the booklet, printing on the front side only. The cover pages can be run on heavier paper to make the project sturdier.

Pass the six pages out to each student. They cut them apart on the dotted middle line, then put the pages in the correct sequence with front cover, pages 1 thru 10 and back cover.

The pictures can be traced or colored during introduction or review. Many other forms of the number can be added by the students on the blank left page across for the number page.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Regrouping Using American Money”

Regrouping is a difficult concept for some children to understand. Using manipulatives helps, but I find that using money makes it easier for the children to visualize the exchange of ones, tens and hundreds.
It also connects them with real examples of Math in their world.

When referring to trading ones for tens and tens for hundreds, I tell the students that they need to go to the bank. They need to deposit their pennies and get a dime or deposit their dimes and get a dollar.

When referring to changing a ten into ones, I use the analogy of going to the bank and trading a dime for 10 pennies.

1 Multiplication Dab-It ( Multiply by 5)

1 Division Dab-It ( Divide by 4)

1 Multiplication Table for extra support

Students can use pencil, colored pencils, markers, or daubers to mark the correct answer. I have students use two different colors. The first color is for problems they know fluently already. They move through the worksheet and answer the problems they easily know. Then I have them use the second color to work on problems they need to use a strategy for finding the answer.

“Scooping the Facts” is a fun way to celebrate each time your students master an addition and/or subtraction fact! Copy the addition and subtraction scoops pages on card stock for each student. When they master a fact, they color that particular scoop the color of their favorite icecream flavor! When all the scoops/facts are done, they get to color the cherry on top!

This smart board lesson was created to provide students with place value practice activities (ones, tens, hundreds). Students will view and use digital base ten blocks to identify, understand and create 3 digit numbers. Some pages can be used while students use their own base 10 blocks and mats.

The file includes a teacher’s notes page, interactive pages, links to interactive websites and links to printable worksheets.

Some pages could be used for instruction and modeling. Use a few pages as a warm up to your math lesson, use a group of the pages as a practice lesson or use a single page. The file is very flexible. I included a few “master” pages where you can create additional practice pages by typing in your own numbers.

Collect the Easter Eggs Game Freebie

This is a 2 player game. Each player takes a game board (an Easter Basket). 1, 2, or 3 dice are needed for this game. For younger students, roll one die and place the correct number of eggs on their pot of gold. Older students can roll 2 or 3 die and add the numbers together to get the number of eggs they should take. When all of the eggs are gone, the students count the eggs on their game board. The player with the most eggs wins.

1/12/14: I have added counters for counting my 2s, 5, and 10s to this file.

Common Core Standards:
K.CC.1 Count to 100 by ones and tens.
K.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.

1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
