My picture book Seeing SYMMETRY has a myriad of colorful examples from animal bodies to quilt blocks to kaleidoscopes to cowboy boots. This packet has ideas for introducing the book then kids can search for symmetrical images inside it. Additional options are to draw the missing half of a tiger or triceratops, make Mexican paper banners (papel picado), and use the enclosed square or round template to draw designs with line or rotational symmetry. Symmetry is a great way to visualize math concepts such as halves vs. wholes, equality, repeats, transformations, and much more.

This download does not contain the book itself. Please ask your librarian for a copy. To see a book trailer and more info on my web site, please click on this link. All graphics are original.

These activities align with the Common Core Math Standard for 4th Grade Geometry:
CCSS.Math.Content.4.G.A.3: Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
