FREE MISC. LESSON – “Set of Free Listening Glyphs | Beethoven Mozart Bach”

by Beth at Sweetly Sings the Songbird
1st – 4th Grade

Looking for a fun and easy way to reinforce active listening skills in your elementary music class? These FREE Listening Glyph Worksheets are the perfect supplement to your composer lessons or classical music units!

Students will listen to famous pieces by BeethovenMozart, and Bach, then color the worksheet based on what they hear — helping them stay focused, engaged, and learning through music.

Each glyph is kid-friendly, no prep, and works beautifully as a stand-alone listening activity, center task, or music sub plan!

✨ What’s Included:

✔️ Beethoven – “Ode to Joy” (Symphony No. 9)
✔️ Mozart – “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik”
✔️ Bach – “Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major”

Each worksheet uses easy color-by-code directions like:
“Color the bears black if this song is played by a solo instrument, or color them brown if it is not.”

Students practice listening closely to musical details like tempo, dynamics, instrumentation, and mood — all while coloring!

❤️ Why You’ll Love It:

  • creative and interactive way to practice music listening skills.
  • Great for grades K–4 — simple enough for younger learners, with room for deeper discussion with older students.
  • No prep needed — just print and go!
  • Works for in-person or digital settings (just share the music link and the printable).
  • Keeps students focused and calm during listening time — perfect for transitions, centers, or quiet work.

✏️ Standards-Based:

These listening glyphs align with the National Core Arts Standards for Music, specifically:

  • Responding to music through analysis of elements and structure.
  • Connecting musical ideas to expressive intent and student response.
  • Developing listening and observation skills related to tempo, dynamics, timbre, and form.

You can feel confident that students are actively learning while having fun!

☕️ Teacher Tip: Use these glyphs as a listening center, or pair them with a “composer of the month” activity! Play the piece more than once — the first time for listening, the second time for coloring. You can even invite students to share their favorite musical element from the piece after they finish!
