FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Free Science of Reading Alphabet Slides & Page Speech to Print Letter Formation”

by Lessons for Little Ones by Tina O’Block
Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

This free sample from my Science of Reading Alphabet Slides & Pages money-saving bundle provides effective and fun phonics and handwriting instruction based on Science of Reading research. They go from speech to print, and help your preschool, kindergarten, or first grade students learn or review the letter Dd sound, letter Dd name, and letter Dd formation using a multisensory approach.

Your students will love the variety of activities and movements in the alphabet slides which help them connect their speech sounds to how those sounds are represented in print. They will build phoneme-grapheme correspondence essential to learning to read and decode words efficiently in an engaging way.

You will love how easy it is to have an effective phonics lesson for introduction or review – simply show and go! No cards to hold or print, large visuals for all students to view, and they can easily be used in conjunction with your sound wall or alphabet cards.

The coordinating printable alphabet page extends the learning, gives students practice tracing and writing the letter, and can be used for practice or assessment.

Multisensory, Interactive Learning: Students engage multiple senses with activities and movements that teach letter sounds, letter names, and proper letter formation.

Aligned with Science of Reading Speech to Print Approach: The alphabet slides and pages incorporate research-based practices that help students make the crucial connection between the sounds they hear and how those sounds are represented in print.

Real Student Mouth Photos & Images in the Alphabet Slides: Real photos help your young students connect learning to their everyday experiences, making lessons more meaningful.

You receive:

  • Slide decks for Google Slides and PowerPoint for the Letter Dd
  • Printable Instructional Guide – Detailed directions explain mouth formations for each sound, whether it’s voiced or unvoiced, continuous or a stop sound, answer keys for each slide, plus verbal instructions for proper letter formation.
  • Alphabet worksheet with answer key for Letter Dd

What is included in the no-prep phonics lesson alphabet slides deck?

Each alphabet slide deck provides a complete phonics lesson that goes from speech to print and focuses on letter sounds, letter names (recognition), and letter formation.

Slide 1: Introduce the sound to the students and have them repeat it. There is an optional audio file included in the upper left corner of the slide. Click to listen. It says the sound and keyword picture.

Slide 2: Mouth formation – Use the provided printable guide to describe what your tongue, lips, and teeth are doing when saying the sound, if the sound is voiced or unvoiced, and if the airflow is continuous or a stop sound.

Ask students the questions from the Guide/Answer Key.

Slide 3: Keyword picture – Say the name of the keyword picture, using beginning sound isolation (pronounce the first phoneme in a word, then say the whole word).  You can say something similar to “/a/, /a/, apple”. Have students repeat. Explain that the sound is at the beginning of the keyword. Isolating the beginning sound helps students understand that words are made up of a series of sounds. The keyword picture acts as a memory aid.

Slides 4-8Find matching beginning sounds (beginning sound isolation, sound discrimination) – Tell students that they are now going to listen for the sound at the beginning of different words. You are going to show them pictures of objects. If the picture name begins with the sound, they are going to show a “thumbs up”. If the picture name does not begin with the sound, they are going to show a “thumbs down”.

Please note: For the letter Xx slides, students will listen for the /x/ sound at the end of the picture name (word).

Slides 9-13: Where in the word is the sound? – Students say the name of the picture. If they hear the sound at the beginning, they place both hands on their heads.

If they hear the sound in the middle, they place both hands on their hips.

If they hear the sound at the end, they touch their toes.

This helps students better discriminate the sound, segment sounds, and understand that words are made up of individual sounds.

Slide 14: Shows how the sound is represented in print – Point out the difference between the capital letter and the lowercase letter. Point to each letter and have students say the sound.

Slides 15-16: Animated gif images that show letter formation – Refer to the Guide/Answer Key for letter formation verbal directions.

Then, have students air-write each letter and say the sound.

Doing the muscle movements and writing the letters leaves a muscle memory in the sensorimotor part of the brain which helps students recognize letters. It also helps children better recognize the unique properties of each letter.

The alphabet page includes the following:

Section 1: Students tap the dot and say the name of the keyword picture, focusing on the beginning sound.

Section 2: Students circle or color the pictures of objects that begin with that same sound.

Section 3: Students circle the correct mouth formation picture and whether or not the sound is voiced or unvoiced (they can place their hands on their throats while saying the sound to see if it vibrates).

Section 4: Handwriting Practice – Students trace the letters saying the sound each time. Students write the letters beginning at the dot guides and say the sound each time. Writing the letters leaves a muscle memory in the sensorimotor part of the brain which helps students recognize letters. It also helps children better recognize the unique properties of each letter.

Section 5: Students say and trace the words, then circle where they hear/see the sound (beginning, middle, end).

Download the money-saving bundle here and have no-prep Science of Reading alphabet slides plus coordinating alphabet pages for all 26 letters of the alphabet (2 sets of slides & pages for each vowel)!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Insects Language and Vocabulary Printables for Middle School”

by Mrs H’s Speech Therapy Room
6th – 9th Grade

Are you looking for a middle school vocabulary program that is age appropriate and instantly applicable? This program addresses synonyms, antonyms, multiple meanings, past tense, pronouns, analogies and noun-verb agreement through theme based seasonal vocabulary.

Many of our students did not master seasonal vocabulary when it was introduced in younger grades. These terms are often not taught again but consistently show up on standardized testing measures. If they aren’t re-introduced to our students so they can gain mastery, they may never learn them. That is why this approach has been a vital part of my own therapy sessions. Students’ eyes light up when they finally understand words that they have heard used by teachers, peers, and on TV.

If you love this sample pack you should check out these money saving bundles that will take you smoothly through an entire school year of fun, complaint free learning.
