FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “May Ditzy Dictionary”   Recently updated !

by Margaret Whisnant
5th – 8th Grade

Children’s Book Week (the first full week of May) and Reading is Fun Week (the second full week of May) are the inspirations for the Ditzy Dictionary. Though they are necessary resources for reading comprehension, dictionaries have never made any young scholar’s most-fun book list. The Ditzy Dictionary just might do it!

Students will enjoy matching regular words to their ditzy definitions. “Vitamin,” for example, sheds its standard meaning and becomes “what you do when a friends shows up at your front door.” “Arbitrator” morphs into “a person who works at Arby’s but eats at McDonalds.” And “melancholy?” Well, that’s “a breed of dog shaped like a cantaloupe.”

The 100-word Ditzy Dictionary is organized into 5 parts with 20 terms each. Full answer keys are included.

Use this free download to interject a little controlled fun into the EOG testing schedule and those rambunctious last few days of school.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “What do you see? See and write worksheet for Kindergarten!”

by KinderBeez
Pre-Kindergarten – Kindergarten

My 7 year old daughter created this “see and write” worksheet all on her own! She came up with the idea and drew it out all by herself. We worked together to create it in Powerpoint™ and she wanted nothing more then to share it with the world so that kindergarteners can try it out at home!

Your child/student can look through the binoculars to see what they can find! Let them sound out their words to fill in the blanks. What a fun way to start learning how to write.

Thank you for trying out my daughter’s freebie! She is thrilled to share her creativity with the world. Enjoy!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Reading comprehension FREE fun passage and questions”

by Brilliantly Lit
3rd – 5th Grade

Fun and learning- what could be better? Students will practice reading and text dependent inferential comprehension skills using chapter one of the novel Nervous Nolan’s Magical MeetingYour students must refer to the extract to give textual evidence of their reasoning. Answers are supplied, of course!
Storyline
Nail nibbling Nolan is regarded as a lucky boy by everyone. There is only one thing he lacks- confidence. Nervous Nolan faces a series of challenges in the book and the first is revealed in this extract: he has to give his first public speech.
How to use this resource
This ready-to-use extract can be used as a whole class activity, for early finishers, or for homework. This freebie is the first chapter of a 10,000 word novel with 100 comprehension questions, Nervous Nolan’s Magical Meeting. In addition to short answer questions, the novel has multiple choice questions, true and false questions, mix and match, and sequencing questions. Wilbert the wizard teaches Nolan a type of magic that is more effective than any wand’s magic. Best of all, Nolan can access this magic himself, at any time. He learns that the greatest magic is not in the words of a wizard’s confidence spell, but the words we say to ourselves.

Standards based for grade 4
The freebie and the novel it comes from are both linked to the literature learning standards. Both are within the Lexile level band of 770-980 and thus is perfectly designed for grade 4. It would also suit many grade 3 students, and most grade 5’s. The book is deliberately crafted as high interest for these grade groups. For more Brilliantly Lit resource fun try

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Writing Center Activities, Word Wall, Writing Prompts”

by 4LoveofLearning
1st – 2nd Grade

Your students will build confidence in their writing skills while working independently on these ready-to-go writing prompt activities with built in word lists. Save time and money by downloading this product you will reuse year after year.

This word wall writing prompt activity is free for the month of March only! I would love your feedback on this product!

This literacy center includes

1. Nine writing prompts pages and over 250 word wall words grouped into:

Sports, Feelings, People, Camping, Food, Days of the Week, Months, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, School, Places, Colors, Ordinal Numbers, Wild Animals, Farm Animals, Shapes, and Party Words.

2. A “My Favorite Words” page where students can record words they like to use often and need help spelling.

3. NIne fun pages with writing prompts (including an “About Me” cutting, pasting, and writing activity. This 2 page “About Me” activity is also offered as a freebie here.)

The “prompts” pages have pictures on the top that coordinate to the

pictures on the word cards. This will help students know which card to look for if they’re “stumped” for a word.

The mini word wall cards can be printed out on cardstock, cut in half, laminated, and put on a ring for easy reference for students during writing activities.

You may want to print them on colored cardstock to add visual appeal. (I’ve kept color to a minimum to save printer ink.)

You could make up several of these “rings” and pass them around during writing, or keep them at a designated Writing Center along with the Writing Prompts pages.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE PREVIEW – Grammar Skill of the Week – Print and Digital”

by Kristine Nannini
3rd – 6th Grade

This is a FREE two weeks of my Grammar Skill of the Week resource.

Get the entire resource HERE!

———————————————————————————-

Use this resource to help your students review and practice a new grammar skill each week. It offers quick daily practice that you can implement as part of your morning routine, reading block, or any other transition time throughout the day when you have a few extra minutes.

Grammar Skill of the Week includes 62 weeks of content that you can use for the entire year. You can cover topics in order, or you can pick and choose topics based on your students’ prior knowledge and areas of need. Each grammar skill includes the following:

Day 1: Learn

Day 2: Practice

Day 3: Practice

Day 4: Writing Prompt

Day 5: Show What You Know

Organization of This Resource:

This resource will help you target a specific grammar skill in the most timely and effective way possible. Each week is set up exactly the same to promote a strong and predictable routine that works best for students.

Day 1: Learn

Students rate their level of understanding before starting the skill:

4 = I can do this on my own, explain how to to do it, and teach others.

3 = I can do it without help and show I understand.

2 = I can do it with help or examples in front of me, but I may make mistakes.

1 = I’m starting to get it but still confused.

0 = Even with help, I don’t understand or can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong.

After students rate their understanding, they start the first day with lesson notes and examples that teach the grammar skill. These lesson notes are all written in student-friendly language to encourage students to work independently. After reading through the lesson and examples, students will complete practice questions to reinforce the skill they just learned. You can allow students to work on this section independently or do it together as a class.

Day 2 & 3: Practice

On the second and third day, students practice the skill with a variety of engaging questions, activities, games, riddles, and more. Based on students’ level of understanding, you can allow them to work independently or together as a class.

Day 4: Write

The ultimate goal of grammar instruction is to get students to naturally incorporate the skill in their speech and writing. On this day, students will do just that. They will respond to a writing prompt that requires them to transfer their knowledge of the skill they’ve learned and practiced.

Day 5Show What You Know

Assess students on the grammar skill of the week. The assessment includes questions of varying difficulty so that you can get an accurate picture of student understanding. Finally, have students rate their level of understanding after completing the assessment.

Pre-Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Are your students struggling to know the difference between a lowercase b and a lowercase d? Here is a new strategy to help them remember this tricky letter reversal.

Have students correspond each finger to a letter: a, b, c, d, or e. Students can then visualize the “stick” for either the ‘b’ or ‘d,’ and then see which direction on their hand they have space to make the circle.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE! Thesaurus Abuse Worksheet, Fun Brain Break, Writing Lesson, Word Choice”

by Laura Randazzo
7th – 10th Grade

I often have students who rely too heavily on the thesaurus as they craft their essays, resulting in overwrought sentences that block, rather than illuminate, the writer’s meaning. Using a little humor, this handout helps students see what happens when one abuses the thesaurus. This handout, which can be completed as a solo or team activity/race/game, requires students to match up a series of well-known proverbs and sayings with their overwritten versions.

Once students have completed the handout, it’s best to review the answers together, as I’ve found that some of my students have not heard of all of these common proverbs/sayings. Non-native English speakers will definitely need special assistance, as the vocabulary is intentionally convoluted and these students probably are not familiar with many of the original sayings. The worksheet provides a valuable exercise to help everyone understand these proverbs and the effect appropriate word choice has on tone and meaning.

When I have extra time, I also assign the students to rewrite the original proverbs/sayings into new language to give them practice on taking a cliched idea and making it fresh.

To add an extra little bit of fun to this lesson, be sure to check out this charming clip from the T.V. show Friends:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1tOqZUNebs

(Special shout-out of thanks to user Katy353 for sharing the link!)

This handout is also works great as part of your emergency sub materials – it’s fun and easy to administer.
