Why Reading Passages?

•Provides context for the grammar convention you are teaching

Use this free Halloween worksheet to practice identifying the 4 types of sentences: naming declarative sentences, imperative sentences, interrogative sentences, and exclamatory sentences. Includes a handout with notes on types of sentences and sentence fluency. Example sentences have a Halloween theme. Halloween Writing Practice – students write their own sentences of each type in response to a picture from their textbook or from a choice of photos included. Promotes sentence fluency in writing! I used this with Jack Prelutsky’s poem, My Neighbour’s Dog is Purple. I had students draw what they saw after reading the title, then after the first stanza, after the second stanza, and then again at the end.

It can be hard to get students engaged with a text like Anton Chekhov’s “The Bet,” which is over 130 years old. That’s why I paired it with a Mr. Beast video. If you’d rather, you can pair it with the Twilight Zone episode titled “The Silence,” or you can do a good old-fashioned close reading. There are lots of options when working with a story like “The Bet,” and with these two no-prep lesson plans or sub plans, Chekhov’s classic is easy to incorporate into your classroom.

This freebie includes two no-prep lesson plans for you to choose from: a close reading of “The Bet” or a paired reading with a Mr. Beast video. The strategies presented are engaging and adaptable. There’s no prep work required. And either lesson would make a great emergency sub plan.

James Thurber’s great short story, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” is a smart, imaginative story that will engage your students from beginning to end. Back in 2013, it was even made into a movie starring Ben Stiller (who also directed the film). In both tellings, Walter is an intriguing and enjoyable character that students can easily relate to. And with these two, no-prep lesson plans, it’s easy to incorporate this text into your classroom.

This freebie includes two no-prep lesson plans for you to choose from: a close reading with analytical one-pager prompts or a two-day creative writing activity. The strategies presented are engaging and adaptable. There’s no prep work required. And either lesson would make a great emergency sub plan.

Students love to see their fluency progress. These recording sheets can be used by teachers, or self-directed by students as a paired activity. Students may work with a partner, parent or older student to practice fluency.

Teachers know that practicing fluency is important to improve automaticity so students do not have to think hard about sounding out words, instead they are able to focus on making meaning out of the text, so as to be able to read more complex text.

There are two easy-to-use recording sheets in this file, one for word list reading, another for passage reading. Directions are given for each tool, and written for teachers, students, and parents. Teachers may want to read the directions to some students.

Get your students excited about apples with this interactive foldable! This engaging activity is perfect for practicing skills and showcasing what they’ve learned about the life cycle of an apple. Designed with simplicity in mind, the cut-outs are easy for young students who are just starting to use scissors. Students will cut along the dotted lines and fold in accordion style along the solid lines. This activity is differentiated to accommodate all learners, offering a choice between cut-and-paste activities or drawing and writing responses.

These FREE Unicorns Reading Passages focus on helping emergent readers to develop confidence and fluency, and also check comprehension. Children can use simple sight word knowledge and blending skills to enjoy these short themed stories.

Unicorns reading passages are well suited to shared reading, guided reading and independent work, depending on the skill level of individual readers and intent of the lesson. The passages also work well as homework.

There are four text-based questions for each of the passages. Each question has multiple-choice answers to encourage young readers to think about what they have read.

Each page also has a read and draw box.

Each page is included in 2 formats: color and black and white.
