Mail is a lost art. We have email and cell phones and we can pretty much get in touch with anyone in the world — quickly! There used to be a time when biplanes and helicopters did “mail drops” and let a bag of mail get dropped out of aplane to a group of people away from the post office. Camps have done this, missionary groups have experienced it, but probably the most common is the military!

There are missionaries who are working hard in another country who may feel rather alone sometimes – and far away from home. Write them a letter and tell give them some encouragement! They will be THRILLED to hear from someone in their church – especially a student who cared enough to send them a hand-written letter!

This centre is a product of The Scripture Scout’s SLEUTH FOR THE TRUTH curriculum. There may be a small number or numbers (1, 2, 3, or 4) on the main pages. These show the quarter(s) where the game could be used the most if you are using the Sleuth for the Truth lesson plans.

You can find information on the type and quality of books requested in most prisons, plus an extensive list of projects in different areas of the country here. Let students find the one they want to work with, or contact local prisons and ask if they can donate books.

If you’d like to include a research element to help your students be better informed, you can find a lot of wonderful articles and resources from the Prison Policy Initiative.

IMPORTANT: If the organization you choose to work with is not within driving distance, and you do not find a local youth detention center, jail, or prison that will accept your books, then just collect money to send.

Many of our students did not master seasonal vocabulary when it was introduced in younger grades. These terms are often not taught again but consistently show up on standardized testing measures. If they aren’t re-introduced to our students so they can gain mastery, they may never learn them. That is why this approach has been a vital part of my own therapy sessions. Students’ eyes light up when they finally understand words that they have heard used by teachers, peers, and on TV.
