FREE Sweden & NATO Conflict Analysis Activity

This free classroom activity introduces students to Sweden’s historic shift from Cold War neutrality to NATO membership and helps them analyze the geopolitical dynamics behind the decision.

Instead of only summarizing events, students use a structured conflict analysis framework used in political science to understand international conflicts.

Students analyze the case by identifying:

• actors
• interests
• long-term causes
• trigger events

The activity is designed for one class period (20–30 minutes) and works well in:

• World History
• Government / Civics
• International Relations
• Global Politics

What’s Included

✔ 1-page student background reading
✔ Cold War Europe map (NATO vs Warsaw Pact)
✔ Structured conflict analysis worksheet
✔ Discussion question for class debate
✔ Teacher answer key

The lesson is ready to teach with no preparation required.

Skills Students Practice

Students learn to:

• identify actors in geopolitical conflicts
• explain strategic interests of states
• distinguish long-term causes from trigger events
• connect historical policies to modern international events

These analytical skills mirror the conflict analysis frameworks used in international relations.

How the Activity Works

Students read a short background text about Sweden’s Cold War neutrality and its decision to join NATO in 2024.

They then complete a structured worksheet analyzing:

Actors → Interests → Long-term Causes → Trigger Event

The activity ends with a short discussion about why neutral states sometimes choose to join military alliances.
