Just REVISED!
Name a book that has a witch in it! Find a word that rhymes with stew….Here’s a way to get kids to move around and open up a few books. Kids will enjoy this “seek-and-find” vocabulary activity, which is especially appropriate for students in grades 2-4.This activity works ESPECIALLY well when kids are allowed to work in pairs or with a buddy.

Have a slew of books out on a table or in a bin for them to peruse…just to make the hunt a little easier.

Great for fast finishers and literacy stations.

They can work independently, or as mentioned above, work with a reading buddy.

They’ll have a little fun with the third page which includes 5 riddles for which students need to find matching answers. They can illustrate those riddles or make a mini book with them after all is done.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Apple Ten Frames Free”

This is a fun game that will help kids learn and practice counting and simple addition and subtraction problems.

It uses apple seed which by itself is a great fine motor skill exercise for the little fingers.

If you don’t like to use seeds for any reason, you can still use the game with some other small manipulatives.

The aim of the game is to make exactly 10 by rolling a die. It’s a bit tricky though for if your sum get more than ten you have to subtracts.

The template makes labels that fit inside the cover of almost any paperback or hardcover novel. (When cut out, it is approximately 3.5×6”, and I haven’t had trouble taping it inside even my small paperbacks so far!)

The form is quick and easy for students to fill out, and it tells students what they REALLY want to know about a book before they begin reading, including difficulty level, whether or not it’s engaging, and if the book is “worth it”.

BONUS: You also get a blank template in case you want to rate books with a different scale or ask different questions! 🙂

It is less than five hundred words (standard length colleges and universities are asking for) and answers several general questions of telling Admissions more about yourself, what kind of experiences you may bring to the campus, what inspires a student to lead… it even can be used as an example for private colleges with religious affiliations.

This smart board lesson was created to provide students with place value practice activities (ones, tens, hundreds). Students will view and use digital base ten blocks to identify, understand and create 3 digit numbers. Some pages can be used while students use their own base 10 blocks and mats.

The file includes a teacher’s notes page, interactive pages, links to interactive websites and links to printable worksheets.

Some pages could be used for instruction and modeling. Use a few pages as a warm up to your math lesson, use a group of the pages as a practice lesson or use a single page. The file is very flexible. I included a few “master” pages where you can create additional practice pages by typing in your own numbers.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Analyzing Fiction Activity: Tell Me a Story”

This FREE activity enables Middle School and High School students to develop both their analytic and creative skills.

First, the students review a list of 12 qualities of Strong Fiction and analyze their personal examples for each of the various criteria. For an activity that focuses on this aspect of writing, check out
Writing: Critique Group Exit Slip

Next, they write examples of Specific Characters, General Objects, Specific Objects, Adjectives, Abstract Nouns and Setting on 3′ x5′ pieces of construction paper color-coded to match the topics.

Finally, they select the basic bones of their story from the cards the class made in the prior segment of this activity and then they write either an individual story or a collaborative piece in groups of three. Whichever writing idea teachers don’t select can be used for another lesson at a later date. This idea will jump-start their thinking Writing: Start Strong!

This Common Core and Bloom’s Taxonomy aligned activity offers students a chance to analyze fiction for specific criteria, and to exhibit how they can combine these criteria with the elements of literature to create a durable story that SHOWS instead of TELLS.

Using a class-created Strong Fiction criteria list, students analyze writing for the qualities they chose as the most important, and then they create their own stories. Students love to tell stories. Let them do this in writing where they can combine their creative ideas with their growing writing and thinking skills.
