These flash cards work like traditional flash cards except instead of using plain ol’ text, they use interesting, colorful, funny images and animations to teach your students the meaning of academic word roots.

How does it work?

You show an image or animation to the class, and students mentally connect that image or animation to a Latin root.

For example, you might show a slide with an image of water pouring from a faucet. Students look at the image and think, “Water, …aqu!” They associate the water with the Latin root aqu. A meaningful and lasting mental connection is made.

I’ve used this mnemonic tool many times with middle school English and Science classes. The students enjoy it and it works.

Why is it important?

Latin roots are word parts that have meaning. They are the building blocks of thousands of English words. Benevolent, malicious, amorous, aquifer, magnitude, migration — the list goes on an on — all of these words contain Latin roots.

Knowledge of word roots and their meaning is important and useful for our students because it gives them the ability to decode the meaning of unfamiliar words in a variety of situations.

Why use these flash cards?

There are three, research-proven components to memorization, and this tool covers all three:

1. Teach to multiple sensory modalities.

2. Information is remembered best if it is interesting or useful.

3. New information is easier to remember if it can be linked to something already stored in the memory bank.

These flash cards have a distinct advantage over traditional flash cards in that they are BIG. You can use them with the whole class at once. You can also set them up at a center or classroom computer and have students rotate through individually.

(PC Requirements: Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 and above; Mac Requirements: Microsoft PowerPoint 2011 and above)

Meet Adam Apostrophe. He’s the newest addition to my “Meet the Puncs” anchor chart freebie. If you don’t already have a copy of the poster set, you can grab it here.

The inspiration for these posters came from an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G set of books called Meet the Puncs by Barbara Cooper. If you’ve never heard of them, you can check them out here!

After I’ve read the books to the kids, I hang the posters in my classroom. Try giving your students various types of sentences on strips and have them find the correct poster. This little game gets them moving and they love figuring out what kind of punctuation they were given. You can also give them the strips without the punctuation on them and have them stand under the poster they think is correct.

This Christmas Idioms Scavenger Hunt {FREE} makes practicing holiday-themed idioms fun! Included are 12 cards that require students to determine the meaning of an idiom in context. This is a perfect activity to use with the whole class or in small groups during the Christmas season!

As the teacher, you will place the cards in secret places all around the room. Students will hunt for a card and read the sentence (with an idiom) on that card. Then, students will hunt around the room trying to find the definition to the idiom they just read on a different card. When they find the card with that answer, they’ll read the sentence shown on that card and then go on a hunt again. Students will love moving around the room trying to find their next question card!

This product is great for students to have as a reference guide for the names of the lines and spaces on the treble and bass stave.

PRINTABLE FORMAT:

Print and hand out to your music students.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

  1. The first page contains a diagram showing each note on the stave and its position on the keyboard.
  2. The second page outlines separately the pitch names of the lines and spaces on the treble stave and sentences that can be used to help students remember them in order.
  3. The third page outlines separately the pitch names of the lines and spaces on the bass stave and sentences that can be used to help students remember them in order.
  4. Pages four and five are for students to write out in music notation, as many words as they can, using only the notes of the stave.

Students practice multiplying fractions in this seasonal puzzle. Students find the answer to each problem and then match it to the square containing that answer. Students can then glue to construction paper or tape together. Puzzle finishes at 9 inches square and makes a lovely bulletin board display.
