FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Sadlier-Oxford Level E Unit 1 Activity”

by Different Drummer Secondary Resources

6th – 12th Grade

This is one of my favorite vocabulary activities to do with students. It asks them to re-write the part of speech, definition, synonyms and antonyms for two words within the unit and then create a sentence using BOTH words. The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to find the connections between words and how they relate to one another. Teachers can assess their processing, how they use words in a sentence, their grammar and punctuation all in one exercise.

Winter Close Reading Passages, Text-Dependent Questions & More

……………………………………………………………………………….

I created this resource to help students read complex texts independently and for a specific purpose. I’ve researched several strategies for close reading and have developed a process that will make your teaching more effective, and help your students develop skills to read for deeper meaning.

This resource contains everything you will need to implement close reading in your classroom! I’ve included THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF THE PASSAGE for you to easily differentiate in your classroom! There are also text-dependent questions and a writing prompt for your students to cite evidence from the text.

In addition, with all of the cross-curricular themes included in the passages, you can also use this pack during science, to study planets, space, and more!

Included in this resource:

One Leveled Passage:
Included in this resource is one planet-themed reading passages. The passage contains text features that your students must analyze. There are three levels of the passage so you can easily differentiate with your students. The levels are based on word count and Lexile levels which can be found in the top left corner of each passage.

The Perfect Planet – Lexile: 960L
The Perfect Planet – Lexile: 780L
The Perfect Planet – Lexile: 660L

Understanding the Standards Teacher Guide
This printable helps teachers understand the purpose of each reading, and how each reading ties into specific Common Core Anchor Standards. I’ve outlined what each student should focus on, and the learning targets for each reading.

Printable Implementation Guide
This printable gives step-by-step instructions for implementing close reading in your classroom. It can be used as your own personal reference and/or can be handed out to students prior to the first read. I’ve also included this printable with a spring theme.

Printable Annotation Guides (Mark Up the Text)
These printable annotation guides help students quickly annotate or mark up the text using symbols. I’ve included two different levels of this resource.

Printable Close Reader Poster
This poster is a visual reminder to help students understand their role as a close reader.

Text-Dependent Questions and Writing Prompts
The passage includes text-dependent questions for each of the three themes or categories in the Common Core Anchor Standards (Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, and Integration of Knowledge and Ideas). The passage also includes one writing prompt that is to be completed after the third read. This writing prompt requires students to synthesize or make connections by combining their thinking and knowledge with evidence from the text. Answer keys are included.

Graphic Organizers
In addition to the text-dependent questions, I’ve also included the following graphic organizers:
•Key Ideas and Details Graphic Organizer (with and without lines)
•Main Idea Graphic Organizer (with and without lines)
•Vocabulary Graphic Organizer (with and without lines)

Standards Addressed:
RI.1, RI.2, RI.3, RI.4, RI.5, RI.6, RI.7, RI.8, RI.9, RI.10

Spelling Flip Book

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flip book when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

Some ideas for bringing peace and calm to your classroom, using practices found in yoga.

A Disciplined Child is a Happy Child

I can’t express enough that one of the worst things a teacher can do is to prejudge a class or a student before they even enter the room. Let’s face it, some kids get along better with some teachers than they do with others, so it’s better to listen but with a grain of salt and                                                                                           make your own judgment.

In-Text Citation Lesson, Practice, and Assessment, MLA 8th Edition

From Teach BeTween the Lines

The MLA 8th edition lesson on incorporating textual evidence (quotations with parenthetical citations) will help your students learn:

-How to create an in-text citation with and without an author’s name.

-How to lead into or out of a quote with the student’s own words.

-How to pepper a quote.

-How to delete parts of the quote to seamlessly incorporate the evidence into the student’s paragraph.

-How to incorporate the title and/or author in signal phrases prior to a quotation.

-Block style quotations.

-How to cite dialogue

-Examples from quality literature for each type of citation.

-Text Evidence Trouble-Shooting Guide teaches students to fix common mistakes such as orphaned quotes, transition phrases, summarizing instead of analyzing, and big, chunky quotes. Support and examples are provided through this document, and the lesson activity that accompanies it.

-5 Days of Bell Ringer Practice Activities

Practice:
-Three practice documents (Google Doc, PDF, and Word document) using examples from literature. (Could be used as a quick quiz)

Summative Assessment:
Students are given three passages, one fiction and two non-fiction texts- with relating themes (social justice). They are asked to close read, then respond to the given prompt using evidence from two of the three sources. They are supported in doing so with detailed graphic organizers, and asked to seamlessly incorporate text evidence for the assessment.

Spelling Flip Book

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Spelling-Flip-Book-3019606

It’s teaching made easy!
