FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Montana 1948 Questions and Answer Key, Part One”

by The English Teacher’s Pet

7th – 12th Grade

The law and racial tensions with Native Americans in Montana 1948 add to the Wild west feel of the novel.

Larry Watson’s Montana 1948 recalls a time when the West was becoming civilized- fences were going up, towns were growing, and families were making names for themselves. The Hayden family always had meant the law in Mercer County, and as narrator David recalls, his father, the Sheriff had an easy time at his job- until one day his brother Frank decided to take liberties with an Indian girl while tending to her as doctor. Frank kills her to keep her quiet, and the book’s conflicts take off as brother is pitted against brother.

Included in this 4 page document are over 20 study guide questions to handout while reading the book, including an answer key for teacher’s reference.

Ready to print and pass out with your novel today!

Death of a Salesman Unit (Complete No Prep)

Product Description

Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman used to be one of my least favorite plays to teach. I found it depressing, and I had a difficult time teaching it in a way that was meaningful to students. Then, I created this bundle so that students would not only learn about drama, tragedy, irony, etc. but also think about their own futures, while they are contemplating their post-secondary education. While Willy Loman’s dreams are unrealistic and unattainable, students contemplate their own dreams, strengths, and weaknesses. You will definitely have more than a few excellent discussions when teaching this play.

This unit has been conceived with the teacher in mind. It contains a Student Guide, a Teacher Guide, and a comprehensive Answer Key. All you have to do is print the packages and teach them. It’s as easy as that! I’ve also included two different options for end unit evaluations, which both contain evaluation grids and answer key. The unit is, in my opinion, visually appealing and the contents teach analysis of literature.

What the bundle contains: (The documents, except for the evaluations, are in PDF format.)

The Student Guide contain 16 pages: (2 versions, with graphics and one without)

-Notes on the American Dream

-An anticipation guide

-An in-depth look at success as it pertains to the lives of the students (which can, later on, be related to the play.)

-Thematic comprehension questions for each act

-Work on motifs and symbols used in the play

-Work on characterization

-Poem association (Langston Hughes’ poem)

-Notes on tragedy (Aristotle’s definition and modern definition)

-Review notes for students

Answer Key contains 29 pages:

-Answers to ALL of the students’ work

-Introduction to Arthur Miller

-Comprehensive notes on each scene of the play (to help students understand and appreciate literary techniques used by the author)

-List of themes and how they are developed – Revue sheet

Final evaluation contains three different options:

1) A unit test with answer key. Contains 3 essay type questions.

2) An essay. Contains essay topics, work process (steps 1…..), an outline guide, and an evaluation grid.

ALL EVALUATIONS ARE FORMATTED IN WORD DOCUMENTS FOR EASY CHANGES AND MODIFICATIONS AND INCLUDE A COMPREHENSIVE ANSWER KEY.

The Teacher Guide contains 5 pages:

-Includes 8 complete lessons that leave the teacher nothing to do, but to teach.

Lesson 1: Historical context and pre-reading

Lesson 2: Setting and reading (there are specific pages assigned to each lesson)

Lesson 3: Symbols, Motifs and reading the play

Lesson 4: Character chart and reading the play

Lesson 5: Reading – exploring irony and the meaning of the title

Lesson 6: Reading and a look at the difference between modern and classic tragedy

Lesson 7: Theme development and review

Lesson 8: Evaluation (Option 1 – test (answer key included), Option 2 – Essay (evaluation grid, work process, outline included)

Future Followers Fest: First Dozen Downloads Free!

Dear Future Followers,
Do you enjoy using carefully crafted free materials in your classroom or in your homeschool space? If so, thank you for clicking the Follow Me button at the top of my shop on TpT!

That little effort is about to pay off in a big way, I hope: The first DOZEN downloads of every new product in my store will now be free to followers. Additionally, the first ten raters who send a ratings screenshot to me at teachingsajoy@gmail.com will receive directly from me any nonbundled item in my store for free.

Since you’re about to be a follower, there is good news for you. If you’ve ever wanted one of my products but were tapped out already on your personal school spending–I get it—this is your chance! Every product in my store that hasn’t yet been downloaded a dozen times is now free. As soon as I hit the magic number of downloads, the price will be changed.

Also, be one of the first 10 to rate the product fairly, send me a screenshot at teachingsajoy@gmail.com, and earn yourself whatever other unbundled item you request in that note.

Teachers Pay Teachers has been a blessing to me and my family from both sides of the storefront. Through purchases, it has given me back tons of time that I could spend with my family and friends. Through sales, it offers me the chance to reach far beyond the walls of my own classroom to, hopefully, enrich the lives of students—and save their teachers that magic “T” word. (Time is absolutely a teacher’s most prized possession. NOT all of it should be spent on schoolwork!)

Of course, TpT has also been my “side hustle” and has given me just a teeny bit of financial confidence. However, since after 5 years of uploading my heart and soul, I’m still only earning a cup or two of coffee each day and need those coffee funds in retirement now more than ever, I’m eagerly looking for ways to boost my sales.

Did you know that the fewer ratings a product has, the lower it appears in a search result? Awesome products may be on page 132 of a search! I don’t know about you, but I never had time to go digging that deeply for an activity. I’m hoping that this scheme of mine will be mutually beneficial, so please spread the word about this amazing opportunity! #FDDF:FirstDozenDownloadsFree

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Can I Use a Pass?”

by Science in the City

7th – 10th Grade

In my classroom, students always ask for passes, often when you are in the middle of
teaching, or at a time that they should not be able to go.

To try to help alleviate this, I have made this “Can I Use a Pass?” sign. It can be posted in a few places in the classroom, and can answer many of those questions simply by pointing to it, and training students to check there before asking for a pass.

It is very simple, and could easily be modified to fit your needs, but the concept might help your classroom. A good thing to keep in mind as you think about procedures and organization over the summer.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Comparing Fractions – Snowman/Winter Activities Freebie”

by Talented in Third

3rd – 4th Grade

Winter Math Activity: Do your students struggle to compare fractions? Do they need a fun, motivating, hands-on way to look at fractions? This freebie has students comparing fractions by coloring in the snowman fractions and then deciding which one is greater.

There are two different versions of this freebie. The color version starts on page 4 and goes through page 5. The black and white version starts on page 3 and goes through page 4. To complete, students will need to color in each fraction shown above each snowman. This will mean students need a basic understanding of what a fraction is before completing this activity.

Some possible ways to use this product:

• Use the color version as a center/laminate to use again and again.

• Use the black and white version as independent work/practice before a lesson.

• Use the black and white version as an assessment to see how students are doing during your fractions unit.

• Use either version at your teacher table as a small group lesson.

There is a set of 2 pages (black and white or color) that are purposely identical to reflect different ways of asking the question/allow you as a teacher to differentiate to meet the needs of your students. The first is the basic question of comparing which is greater, the second requires students to use the symbolic symbols of greater than (>), less than (<), or equal to (=).

If You Need More Fraction Skills, check out my paid version

which includes:

• Pages 5-6/13-14: comparing fractions with the same denominator (more/less pieces)

• Pages 7-8/15-16: comparing fractions with the same numerator (size of the pieces)

• Pages 9-10/17-18: comparing fractions with the same numerator (size of the pieces, numerator greater than one)

• Page 11/19: comparing fractions that are equivalent (=) and close to equivalent

• Pages 21-27: Answer Keys

Parts of Speech Grammar Circles (Superhero Themed)

Product Description

Superhero themed Parts of speech Grammar Circle Unit

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit grammar in with everything else I had to teach. I would give students grammar pages, and then we would correct them together. It was tedious, and it took forever! What’s more is that students were not learning the way I wanted them to. They wouldn’t apply what they had learned from the grammar pages and activities.

I found a solution!

Grammar Circles. Grammar Circles are very similar to literature circles in the sense that students are teaching one another grammar. It is a fun and functional way to teach and Learn grammar. Although this may be done individually, it can also be completed as a group where students, through a specific process outlined in the package, teach one another grammar. They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do other than to facilitate and supervise.

Once these circles have been implemented and students know who their group members are and what they are supposed to do, it is a great prep to leave a supply teacher.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes, and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (27 pages)

Activities included focus on:

-nouns
-adjectives
-verbs
-adverbs
-prepositions
-conjunctions
-putting in all together
-correct use of pronouns
-who and whom
-that and which
-who’s and whose
-that and who
-pronoun case
-pronoun agreement
-active and passive voice
-verb tenses (present, past, future)
-verb uses (consistency in verb tenses)

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their work and learn from one another.

Also included are free Superhero Themed Parts of Speech Posters to decorate your class.

For those who are from Ontario, Canada – this unit adheres to the Grade 9 English Curriculum (academic). The unit can be taught in any grade to learn parts of speech.

Poetry Unit (for senior students)

Product Description

Poetry Unit for Senior Students (Bundled)

I love poetry! I love reading it, I love teaching it, and I love the discussions I can have with my students because of it. May students (and some teachers) dislike poetry because they think it’s too difficult. I once had a student tell me that poetry was like a “code” that needed to be unlocked. Cringe!! Some poems are meant to be analyzed. Some poems and meant to sound beautiful, and some poems are meant to be simple and enjoyed for what they are. This unit has a little of all of those things.

Students love this poetry unit. It is a complete unit with no prep required on the teacher’s part. This 2 and a half week unit includes a student guide, 12 detailed lesson plans, two multimedia presentations (no internet connection required), a complete answer key with annotated poems (this is a teacher favorite!) , and an end of the unit evaluation with answer key.

Just print it and teach it. It really is that easy.

This bundle includes individual lessons devised to teach students the importance of:

• Figurative language (its uses and effects)
• How to read poetry
• How to understand and apply symbolism and imagery
• The importance of rhythm
• The importance of tone and attitude in a poem
• Types of poetry
• How to analyze poetry
• How to appreciate poetry (even when you don’t understand it)
• Includes some Canadian poetry

This unit’s focus is the analysis of poetry and teaches students how to make inferences, which is a skill they must learn for their other subjects as well.

Poems include authors such as Emily Dickenson, Dorothy Parker, Maya Angelou, Thomas Gray, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Alfred Noyes, T.S. Eliot, Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Frost, Pearl Jam, Langston Hughes, Margaret Atwood, and Walt Whitman. The Unit includes 21 different poems.

The unit has been conceived to last 15 days – with 65 minute periods (although they are easy to modify).

The unit includes:

1 – The teacher guide (Contains 12 comprehensive lesson plans to teach the poems included in the unit. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO TEACH THIS UNIT HAS BEEN DONE FOR YOU. )

2 – The student package (Contains students’ notes, poems, and questions) (28 pages)

3 – The answer key includes annotated poems and answers to all student activities, as well as an example of paragraph developing a theme in poetry (saving you time).

4 – Included is a test with multiple choice questions as well as one development question. All answers are included. (Word format for easy changes)

5 – 2 PowerPoint presentations – one multimedia presentation to introduce the unit (17 slides) and the second to reinforce the use of imagery and symbolism (19 slides) – NO INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED

A total of 68 pages + 36 slides are included in this package.

This unit is complete and does all of the thinking for you. All you need to do is to print out and photocopy the student package, and you’re set.

Close Reading Made Simple

Why Close Reading?

So what happens when students can’t access the grade-level text in your class? With the extreme diversity of students in any given classroom this is a given. If you have not jumped on the “Close Reading” Bandwagon it is not too late! Even though education goes through trends like the fashion industry, close reading is here to stay. It is not just for the English-Language Arts teacher either. Social studies, science, and math are using this technique too. With the increased rigor that is expected in the CCSS and the new science standards it is impossible for teachers not to utilize this valuable tool. So how do you do it? There are tons of resources available for all content areas and levels of educators; however, I like to keep it simple. Regardless of what grade level the students are at I like to tell them that if they are going to underline or highlight something that they must make an annotation in the margins.

Why are they highlighting it?

I model on a simple piece of text and give them examples that they can easily relate to. We all know that students love to highlight 3/4 of the text and then they get to the end and can’t tell you one thing that the text was about. That is because they are so busy highlighting everything in pretty colors that they fail to retain anything that they are reading. Another way to circumvent this is to chunk the text for them. I always have students number the paragraphs of the text so it is easy to reference back to when answering text-dependent questions. Close reading is not something that should be done with a really long piece of text. It fails to become effective after 3-4 pages. It becomes really effective when used with 1-2 pages of text. The next step I have students do is write a one-sentence summary after each paragraph. This helps develop their synthesizing and analysis skills. For students that are at the lower grade levels, or for students that need differentiation I give them sentence frames to summarize.

Emojis-Why not?

Teachers all have a different view on doodling and making pictures on packets. I say…”Why NOT?” Some students that are not going to be good at summarizing or analyzing the text might be successful by using Emojis to help them annotate the text. Students that struggle with reading might increase their comprehension if they highlighted or underlined the text and added an emoji in the margins to help them remember what is important. For example, using a lightbulb for a main idea in a paragraph will allow those students that love to draw and doodle a constructive outlet when they are closely reading a text. If it is a detail that excites them then have them put a smily emoji. Students love Emojis! Have them funnel their creative abilities into their close reading techniques. This will help those students remain engaged while allowing them to use their skills in a constructive way. It may also help decrease the amount of doodling that takes place on your tables and/or desks!

Keeping Gifted Students Engaged

To ensure that you are meeting all levels of learners in your classroom, including those at the highest level, have students create their own system of annotating text! This allows them to develop a system that make sense to them and keep them challenged and engaged. The bonus part of this strategy is that sometimes they come up with a system that can be used by other classmates. Students never cease to amaze me their ability to create concepts that never occur to me. It has to do with their developing minds! I have had students explain the most complex details to another students in a simple way that helps them understand. Their method of communicating the concept never occurred to me but it works more effectively than the method I was using. This is also the miracle of teaching!

In Summary

In my opinion, there is not a “right” or “wrong” way to do close reading. Don’t get caught up in the idea of right and wrong. I tell my students that it is a personalize experience that needs to make sense to them. As long as they are reading the text more than once, and reading it for a different purpose that forces them to dig deeper into the text it is fine. You might be surprise on the creative ways that the students come up with to deeply interact with the text. I often find myself taking away different bits of information that did not occur to me during the first read. Rereading is a gift that needs to be shared with your students. They deserve to understand text on a deeper level in order to enjoy it! Remember that the work that you do is priceless and you are appreciated! Don’t forgot to leave your comments! I enjoy reading them!
