LANGUAGE ARTS – “75 Games & Activities for Teaching the Six Syllable Types of Reading”

The bundle packet includes 75 games and activities that all target teaching the 6 types of syllables in reading: Closed Syllables, V-C-e Syllables, r-Controlled Syllables, Open Syllables, Vowel Digraph & Diphthong Syllables, and Final Stable Consonant Syllables.
The basic overall purpose of learning syllable type reading is to give students 6 reading strategies to aid them in chunking longer words into short, readable parts. Learning to read by identifying the type of syllable is the most consistent method to teach reading to your students, and the easiest way for your students to learn to read.These 75 activities/games can be placed in language stations, or they can be played during small groups. So enjoy as your students learn another way to break the code to reading!At the present, I am creating my last packet of game and activities to go with the final stable syllable type, and once I complete it, I will make it available. LANGUAGE ARTS – “Scooping Words With One Open Syllable & One Vowel – Consonant -e Syllable”

Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables.
Syllables can be divided by saying them orally or by using a pencil and paper. If we orally divide a word into syllables, we usually clap the word out. For example, if we orally divided the syllables of beside, we would clap out ‘be’ and ‘side,’ and that would be two claps. If we divided the syllables on paper, we would place a slash between the ‘e’ and ‘s’ in the word ‘beside.’

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: b e s i d e. Not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of an extra letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables.

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice
scooping words with one open syllable and one vowel-consonant-e
syllable. You will notice that quite a few prefixes are open syllables.

Sometimes I Feel Green

 

“Sometimes I Feel Green” is a social narrative which introduces and explains the concept of behavioral escalation to students, based uponThe Incredible 5-Point Scale, a strategy created by Kari Dunn Buron and Mitzi Beth Curtis.

This short story, which includes a number of visual supports, breaks down and presents concepts to students to help them become better able to recognize, identify and manage their emotions. Coping strategies for appropriately managing strong emotions are also introduced within the text.

“Sometimes I Feel Green” can be used as a part of a plan for implementing IEP goals targeting emotional regulation or included as a proactive strategy in a behavior support plan for teaching prosocial replacement behaviors. While the content area is highly relevant within most special education classrooms, the material it covers makes it valuable resource within the general education setting as well.

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: p o l i s h. This way not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of a misplaced letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables. 

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice scooping words with two closed syllables.

Simply print and cut along the guidelines. One idea is to print on card stock or on colored paper. Laminate and use them again and again and keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

Find Someone Who Knows Fractions Game

 

This cooperative printable game with fractions can be used as review prior to an assessment or as a pre-unit prior knowledge assessment. Students answer questions on each other’s boards, and record their name on the squares they answer. When bingo is played, the students whose names are on the squares must give the correct answers for bingo to be awarded. The review is twofold: when they answer each others’ boards and when answers are reviewed during the bingo game.

This fun print and play activity will help students master the skills of phonemic deletion/subtraction and reinforce phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear the smallest unit of sound. Students will read a word and then subtract a sound thus creating a new word. 

Also, this activity targets initial consonant blends and consonant digraphs such as bl, ch, cr, sm, th, sh, and more. There are two game boards (colored/black and white versions) and 92 task cards designed to engage learners. You may use this game board or any game board you have. Or just use the task cards alone, and the student with the most cards at the end wins.

This free Grade 3 -5 resource engages students in discovering for themselves the various ways in which singular nouns become plural. This lesson plan has students:working first in pairs and next in groups of 4 to investigate and share their learning about plural nouns, and then working independently to apply their new knowledge with the worksheet provided.

An answer key is provided for this lesson, which will take from 30 to 45 minutes to complete, although it can be broken into two shorter lessons.

Hello my friends! Here in Ontario, we have one week left of classes. At the end of the school year, I like to take some time to discuss Canada Day with my students. For the age group I teach, their perceptions of Canada Days past can be quite entertaining:

Canada Day is clearly a memorable experience for even our youngest students, whether it be of fireworks, time with family or friends during the day. Whether we are retelling a story that we have read together, creating our own adventure, or discussing a personal experience, there is a logical sequence of events and words that match: first, then, finally (or whichever vocabulary you have decided to use!) (For a post about using the 3 part graphic organizer with young students, and a freebie, click here!)

The bundle packet includes 75 games and activities that all target teaching the 6 types of syllables in reading: Closed Syllables, V-C-e Syllables, r-Controlled Syllables, Open Syllables, Vowel Digraph & Diphthong Syllables, and Final Stable Consonant Syllables.
The basic overall purpose of learning syllable type reading is to give students 6 reading strategies to aid them in chunking longer words into short, readable parts. Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables.

Syllables can be divided by saying them orally or by using a pencil and paper. If we orally divide a word into syllables, we usually clap the word out. For example, if we orally divided the syllables of polish, we would clap out ‘pol’ and ‘ish,’ and that would be two claps. If we divided the syllables on paper, we would place a slash between the ‘l’ and ‘i’ in the word ‘pol/ish.’

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: p o l i s h. This way not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of a misplaced letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables. 

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice scooping words with two closed syllables.

Simply print and cut along the guidelines. One idea is to print on card stock or on colored paper. Laminate and use them again and again and keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

This fun print and play activity will help students master the skills of phonemic deletion/subtraction and reinforce phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear the smallest unit of sound. Students will read a word and then subtract a sound thus creating a new word. 

Also, this activity targets initial consonant blends and consonant digraphs such as bl, ch, cr, sm, th, sh, and more. There are two game boards (colored/black and white versions) and 92 task cards designed to engage learners. You may use this game board or any game board you have. Or just use the task cards alone, and the student with the most cards at the end wins.

Revision Hands-on Activity

 

Rewriting / Revision Hands-on Activity. This exercise illustrates to students exactly why revision and rewriting is a necessary part of the writing process. It is helpful to do this activity just before a group critique or feedback session on rough drafts. This is a favorite activity in my first-year college composition class, but I have also used it in classrooms for grades 6 and up with great success.

You could also modify this lesson to work simply as an instruction-writing exercise.
