Week 1: The Louisiana Purchase

Introduce the Louisiana Purchase, the geography of expansion, reasons for moving west, vocabulary, and historical timelines.

Week 2: Maps and Western Exploration

Connect Lewis and Clark, Sacagawea, Zebulon Pike, and John C. Frémont with mapping, western knowledge, and natural barriers.

Week 3: Choices on the Western Trails

Compare trail destinations and purposes, explore migration and travel decisions, and schedule the Oregon Trail Supply Wagon STEM challenge.

Week 4: Waterways and Travel Challenges

Connect rivers, steamboats, and the Erie Canal with transportation and trade. Schedule the Wagon River Ferry challenge and continue digital project work.

Week 5: Gold, Homelands, and Unit Review

Bring together the California Gold Rush, boomtowns, the Gold Rush Sluice challenge, Manifest Destiny perspectives, and changes to Native American homelands. Finish with review, assessment, and reflection.

Pacing notes identify opportunities for rotations and additional work time. Adjust the suggested schedule to match your social studies block and students’ needs.
