Wild About Animals Mini Research Pack

 

What’s Included in This Packet:

Activities to do with the 2 different farm animals

“I can describe…” Map for each animal
“Have, Can, Are” Maps for each animal
Clipboard Page for each animal

How to use this research packet:

Begin by letting students choose an animal they want to
research. You could let students work in partners or groups, or each have their own animal.

Let students research their animal by reading books, magazines or newspapers (such as Scholastic, Time for Kids, etc.) about their creature. They could also search for information on the internet and/or by asking family members or friends.

After students have researched their creature you could begin with the “I can describe…” page and/or the “Can, Have, Are” map to make a quick list of things about their creature. These two pages will be helpful when the child begins to write their report about their creature. I would print these off and have available for all of your little researchers. (Just as a note, by this time of year my kindergarteners have had many experiences with these 2 types of maps and understand how to fill them in.)

The clipboard research page can be used for younger writers to share the information they gathered about their animal. I have also included a different format of research pages for older students.

My little guys are always very excited to share their research. You could let each student or group present their information to the class.

You might choose to collect all of their research reports and make a class book. If so, you will find a colored book cover for just this purpose included with this packet.

Have fun researching all of the different animals and helping your little people become researchers and scientists!

Free Soil Lab

 

This soil freebie will help you and your students observe soil samples and test their capacity to retain water.

It contains recommendations and student recording pages.

Directions:
Set up 4 stations for students to record data. Include a different soil sample at each station. I like using gravel, sand, potting soil or loam, and clay. Each station should have a small container of the soil particles (like a petri dish), a graduated cylinder, funnel, and coffee filter.

Go over the question and write a hypothesis.

As a class, put 40 mL of water in each funnel containing a coffee filter and funnel with the particles inside. Allow time for the water to pass through the coffee filter and into the graduated cylinder.

Then, have students visit the stations to record their observations. Create a chart and graph of the data, draw conclusions, and answer the question.

Do your students struggle with correct spelling? Give each student a simplified spelling dictionary they can write in and keep! Although my students use this across disciplines, I designed it especially for my writing workshop. It is a list of alphabetized frequently used words and frequently misspelled words! There is also a place at the bottom of each page for students to add words that they use often in their own writing. In the back of the booklet, I included the following word lists:

Words for good, nice, great
Words for went, ran
Words for said
Days of the week
Seasons
Months of the year
Holidays
Numbers
Colors

Directions for a booklet, copy front and back. Then staple in the middle and fold over. No need for cutting!

Counting Coins Made Easy

 

Are your students having a difficult time with counting coins? The Magic Money method has worked for me for the last 9 years of teaching money to 1st and 2nd graders. This download includes:

– a chart that students might place in their homework/classroom folders with realistic, dual-sided pictures of each coin, coin values, a chant for each coin, and the placement of the dots that will aid them in counting the coins.

– a one-sheet parent explanation of how the Magic Money system works, and how to use it to help their child become successful at counting coins at home

– a hundred chart that specifically aids children in becoming fluent at counting by 5’s (a necessary sub-skill for using this method)

-a coin counting worksheet sample with answer key

-a sample word problem page

This method will work for the vast majority of your students. Don’t worry about them relying on the dots. With time, they will begin to chunk larger values together until they are counting coins in a more traditional way.

Dolch Sight Word Primer UNO Card Game

 

Everyone loves to play UNO and here is a way students can practice their Dolch primer sight words while having fun. My students LOVE to play this game. They are having so much fun playing they don’t realize they are learning! The game is designed for 2-4 players. Simply print each page off on red, blue, yellow, green, and orange card stock or construction paper, laminate the pages, then cut the words apart.

The game is just like UNO but instead of matching numbers on the cards they have to match the words on the cards. They also have to read the words on the card they are discarding.

Middle and High School Writing Prompts

 

Finding and/or coming up with writing prompts can be difficult and time consuming. I have put together 19 prompts for you to use with your students. 8 are generic, basic persuasive (4) and informative (4) prompts – they are NOT text-based. The others are text-based writing prompts. There are excerpts from an Inaugural Address from Bill Clinton, Poe’s “The Raven” poem, and two Barack Obama Inaugural Addresses (these prompts utilize both texts).

The generic prompts could be used as low as 6th grade, but are probably more appropriately targeted for grades 7-10. The text-based prompts are definitely not appropriate for students below grade 7, and some of them may work better for higher grades, as they address rhetoric, which may not be taught that early.

The 8 basic prompts come from my Expository and Persuasive Writing Workshop, so if you own that, those will not be new for you. However, the text-based prompts are not currently part of any product, although I am working on a text-based writing workshop resource that should hopefully be out some time later this year.

Solving Multi-Step Equations Stations

 

Stations mazes are great because they get students up and moving around the room. They also encourage students to check their work carefully since an incorrect answer will eventually send them back to a problem they have already solved. Successfully completing the maze requires students to slow down and check their work.

This activity can be completed individually or in pairs. A student answer sheet is included. All of the stations are in color.

There are 10 stations. All of the problems are solving multi step equations. Some of the problems involving parentheses involve distributing. The problems are of various difficulty.

How to Use a Protractor

 

Now that using a protractor is a Common Core skill for 4th grade, here is a little freebie to help your students, (and maybe you too, if it has been a while since you’ve had to use one!)

You get a large version of the poster which can be projected on your interactive white board or printed out poster-sized. There is also a page with a smaller version, which is great to print out for students to glue into their math notebooks.

Mother's Day Craft

 

Your student’s Moms/Mums/Grandmas/Aunts & Special Ladies are going to LOVE their very first ‘diamond’ necklace made by their child! And you are going to LOVE the feedback and smiles on everyone’s faces!

I have been making these in my classroom for years and I have Moms come back years later raving about their first ‘diamond’ necklace and how it is still their most prized piece of jewelry!

This Pack Includes:
*Photos of how to make the ‘diamond’ necklace

*Recipe for flour/salt dough w/ directions

*Alternative suggestion to using flour/salt dough with photos

*Necklace poem- 4 frames- for Mom

*Necklace poem- 4 frames- for Mum

*Necklace poem- 2 frames for Grandma, 1 for Aunt & 1 for ‘Special Lady’

Poem:
~Copy on colored paper and wrap or present with the necklace!
I have included poems for Mom/Mum/Grandma. If you need something else, please contact me!

All you need is some flour, salt, water & dimes! Add some paint, ribbon & beads and you are all set for a gift that will put a ‘sparkle’ in mom/mum/grandma’s eyes and heart!
