LANGUAGE ARTS – “Scooping Words with Two Closed Syllables”

Grades K-3

by Reading on Strawberry Lane

Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables.

Syllables can be divided by saying them orally or by using a pencil and paper. If we orally divide a word into syllables, we usually clap the word out. For example, if we orally divided the syllables of polish, we would clap out ‘pol’ and ‘ish,’ and that would be two claps. If we divided the syllables on paper, we would place a slash between the ‘l’ and ‘i’ in the word ‘pol/ish.’

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: p o l i s h. This way not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of a misplaced letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables.

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice scooping words with two closed syllables.

Simply print and cut along the guidelines. One idea is to print on card stock or on colored paper. Laminate and use them again and again and keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

LANGUAGE ARTS – “Phoneme Subtraction”

Grades K-2

by Reading on Strawberry Lane

This fun print and play activity will help students master the skills of phonemic deletion/subtraction and reinforce phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear the smallest unit of sound. Students will read a word and then subtract a sound thus creating a new word.

Also, this activity targets initial consonant blends and consonant digraphs such as bl, ch, cr, sm, th, sh, and more. There are two game boards (colored/black and white versions) and 92 task cards designed to engage learners. You may use this game board or any game board you have. Or just use the task cards alone, and the student with the most cards at the end wins.

End of the Year Musings

By Deann Marin of Socrates Lantern

Baby Canada GeeseI always approach the end of the school year with mixed emotions, though I’m ecstatic to be out for summer vacation, I always feel a little sad saying good-bye.  Many of my soon to be 7th graders hug me and leave with tears in their eyes, knowing that our little family will no longer be together. All the trials and tribulations, the challenges, the fun times and sad times will be always be with us, but it will never be the same.

Reflecting back to the beginning of the year, I remember how small they were when they first entered my room, some shy and nervous about their first few days, others acting cool trying to impress their peers., especially those they don’t know. The first hurdle over, they’ve opened their lockers. Simple process for some while others end up in tears because they can’t figure out how to do it. By the end of the year, they look back at this and laugh at themselves.

How strict I am the first few weeks, trying very hard not to crack a smile. This is the time to get them into shape. so that we all have a great year. They learn the rules and always test me.  Finally, after awhile, I can let my hair down and be myself. I can crack jokes, they can joke around and we can all laugh together. This is when real learning takes place, and to see their “ah ha,” moments is what teaching is all about.

I love 6th graders, the majority are so willing to learn, that it makes teaching rewarding and enjoyable.. One of my favorite things is our morning discussions. Their backgrounds are quite diverse and I learn something new almost everyday. Many are knowledgeable about a lot of things and they’re eager to share. They can talk about whatever is on their mind, and they feel safe doing so. We are now, officially a family and I’ve become their surrogate parent.Sandhill Crane Flying

As I say good-bye, each of my kids takes a part of me with them.  I feel certain that I’ve given them the support, strength and confidence to move on to seventh grade.   The time has come for them to spread their wings a fly.

When I close the door for the final time, I take comfort in knowing that soon I’ll have another bunch of little chickadees to bring up.

Have a wonderful summer

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Insects Eat Too! Lets Make a Book”

by KinderKay

Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

Insects Eat Too-Lets Make a Book

What exactly do insects eat? What are bees looking for when they fly from flower to flower? Students compare and contrast insect mouth parts and understand that an insects food is related to its type of mouth part. Everyday items are used to give students an understanding of how an insect eats. Students draw four insects bee, fly, mosquito and using easy to follow step-by-step illustrations. Students illustrate the book themselves by using basic drawing and cutting skills. This is a great supplement to your thematic Insect unit! How to draw a bee, an ant, a mosquito, and a fly are included in this unit.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Printable Books for Beginning Readers Sample–3 Books”

by Teacher Tam

Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

Printable Books for Beginning Readers Sample

This is a set of 3 sample books from 3 larger, 10-book sets of printable beginning reading books that cover: word families, CVC words, phonics, sight words, blends, digraphs, as well as short and long vowel sounds. The books are phonics-based and get progressively more difficult as your reader builds on skills covered in previous books.

Directions for Book Assembly:
Each book consists of twelve pages of print for the child, but only four pages to copy. In order to make the books, print pages 1 and 2 then print pages 3 and 4 on the back (1 and 3 are back-to-back and 2 and 4 are back-to-back). Cut each page through the middle horizontally. Order the pages, fold, and staple to make the books. A heavier weight of paper works well to print the books on, such as 28 lb. weight. It helps so that the pictures don’t show through the paper. They are also a lot more durable if the covers are laminated.

FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON – “We the People Kid Created Class Book FREEBIE”

by Hilary Lewis-Rockin’ Teacher Materials

1st – 3rd Grade

We the People Kid Created Class Book

I use books and a video to introduce the Preamble to the Constitution to my students. This is a book that kids can work on together to create illustrations for your own class book. I sometimes create 2 class books so that everyone can make their own individual page. You can use the blank pages to have the kids draw pictures and/or write sentences that tell what America means to them.

You can use this in a variety of ways. The books I use are for younger children. However, there are many other books and videos available that could be used with older children.

I hope you this packet helps you teach your students about The Preamble to the Constitution of our United States of America.

Thanks!

TpT Language Arts Lesson – Writing For Real Purposes: Fun Summer Lists!

Have you noticed that in the last few weeks of the school year, it gets more challenging to motivate kids to write? Many seem to only have the energy and patience for tasks that have real purpose. And let’s face it, kids are far more motivated to do what we do or what they see others excited about.

The Writing For Real Purposes: Fun Summer Lists storybook provides a model of students discussing how various types of lists are useful to them, and the lists they have made. (If you purchased this pack last year, simply download the update that now includes the storybook!)

Summer is an ideal time for making plans and getting kids involved in making lists. Being mindful of meeting them where they are, it is important to communicate flexibility in terms of the expectations for how the lists are filled in. Because some children may be writing while others are copying or drawing, each printable has a lined and unlined version (except for the Friends contact lists which have ‘mostly girls’ / ‘mostly boys versions’).

Think of the possibilities of summer vacation….
