Read about the Angler Fish, the Clownfish, and the Mimic Octopus! This resource includes informational paragraphs and follow-up questions for vocabulary and sentence writing.

This 3 page sampler contains short factual paragraphs; quick reads… so kids can glean the main facts and key ideas about each animal.

I created these for some of my students who get too stressed when they see long passages. Having less complex text makes it easier for them to read and feel successful.

Use them for independent work, center work, or as a supplement to a unit study on the ocean or ocean animals. These are especially great for summer school or after school mini lessons.

ELA Common Core Standards are listed for second and third grade level expectations.

This clip chart is used to track students’ progress as they go through the writing process. Students change their clip after conferencing with an adult so that students can work at different paces. This helps with differentiation for writing.

There are three sets of clip charts and they can be used separately or mix and matched. There is black and white chevron, yellow and white chevron, and pink and lime green polka dots. These match my classroom decor sets.

I am so excited to share these five sets of questions that can be used for African American historical figures and hero paired passages. For each person, there is one page of paired comprehension questions and one extended response question. The pairs of historical figures included are:
Jesse Owens & Ruby Bridges
Frederick Douglass & George Washington Carver
Martin Luther King & Thurgood Marshall
Harriet Tubman & Sojourner Truth
Mary McLeod Bethune & Rosa Parks

Students may conduct research to answer these questions via computers, apps, or nonfiction books. I also recommend my Black History Month Close Reading Passages for the information needed to answer the questions. Use this Valentine’s Day Freebie to encourage your students to write the Top 10 Reasons why they love a special member of their family. Glue it inside a card or use it alone! It’s a quick and easy way for your students to write how they feel about a special member of their family. I am even using it to write to each of my kiddos, my husband, and my parents to give to them on Valentine’s Day! It is always nice to hear the reasons why someone loves you and it is important to teach kids to express their feelings in positive ways!

The Memory Coat book study goes along with an blog post about teaching inference.

This heart-warming book is about families immigrating to America to escape persecution. A young boy lost his parents due to an epidemic and he ends up living with his relatives. His only reminder of his family is the coat his mother made for him. Grisha’s coat is tattered on the outside but beautiful on the inside. This story is about the family’s journey to American and going through the immigration process at Ellis Island.

In this FREE unit, activities include making inferences, vocabulary, and crafts with a coat and suitcase. This unit can go with cultural studies, historic fiction, and family heritage.

FREE: 100th Day of School Writing FREEBIE —

Students get so excited about the 100th day of school. I usually have my students bring in 100 useful items after they count them out at home. I request things like wiggly eyes, craft sticks, cotton balls, paper clips, stickers, brown paper bags, beads, and the list can go on and on. These items become useful items throughout the school year and students get to practice counting out the items at home.

I also do this writing activity and they simply LOVE it! After being in school for 100 days, students are to tell their favorite thing to do at school. They draw a picture of them doing their favorite thing in the box at the top. It is amazing to see the different thoughts they have about their school day. I love it when they say they like writing in their journal or going to literacy centers, but some are funny and tell that they love going to lunch, recess, and PE. These are always fun to read! I hope you and your students enjoy this writing activity FREEBIE! Please leave me some feedback!
