FREE MATH LESSON – “Diffy – Fun Subtraction Math Game! Use with Integers, Fractions, Money”

by Rachel Lynette

2nd – 12th Grade

Diffy - Fun Subtraction Math Game

Diffy is a fun and intriguing math game that requires subtraction, logic, and pattern recognition to win. It can be played with whole numbers, negative numbers, fractions, and money. This game is challenging for both kids and adults!

You can play Diffy using the document camera with the whole class, or have students complete their own Diffy games either in worksheet format or at a center with laminated wipe-off sheets.

This download includes:
-Teacher intro and game sample
-Color Diffy game with directions
-Black and white diffy game with directions

These cards will look best in color, but will also print out fine in grayscale. Simply print and cut along the guidelines. Laminate and use them again and again. Alternatively, you could print on cardstock. It works well to keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

This is an awesome activity that can be easily adapted to children of various ages and needs. It is also good for differentiation instruction. It’s a great way to incorporate technology into the classroom.
————————————————————————————-
*****This is a great product to try If your school/district blocks or filters certain internet sites.
If these QR codes work, then all of our products should work without any problems. The videos are from YouTube, but we have funneled them through the safeshare site so that students only see the video from the QR code. Safeshare keeps the videos clean from commercials, popups, and won’t allow students to surf the internet. When the QR code is scanned, students then hit play.

Check out our QR Codes (made in safe share) to explore the world of penguins! Just SCANthe QR Codes on the task card using any device with camera capabilities (such as a Smart Phone, iPad, iPod, etc.) and watch your students immediately become actively engaged while exploring and learning interesting facts about plants via songs and stories.
————————————————————————————-
Directions for Use: Our products are made into two formats. We have a task card that QR Codes can be scanned using rear facing camera devices and we have QR Codes made into individual cards that can be cut apart to use with front facing camera devices. The individuals can be backed with construction paper or pretty scrapbook paper to fit the theme; these can also be placed around the room. Print, laminate or place in plastic sleeves for notebooks. You can also hook your device up to your smartboard for the whole class to view.

After viewing the QR codes (made in safe share), the students can be directed to the choice board activities and word bank to enrich their common core learning experience. These activities can then be easily used as formative assessment tools to help you make effective teaching decisions!

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Free Soil Lab”

by The Science Penguin

3rd – 5th Grade

Free Soil Lab

This soil freebie will help you and your students observe soil samples and test their capacity to retain water.

It contains recommendations and student recording pages.

Directions:
Set up 4 stations for students to record data. Include a different soil sample at each station. I like using gravel, sand, potting soil or loam, and clay. Each station should have a small container of the soil particles (like a petri dish), a graduated cylinder, funnel, and coffee filter.

Go over the question and write a hypothesis.

As a class, put 40 mL of water in each funnel containing a coffee filter and funnel with the particles inside. Allow time for the water to pass through the coffee filter and into the graduated cylinder.

Then, have students visit the stations to record their observations. Create a chart and graph of the data, draw conclusions, and answer the question.

Do your students struggle with correct spelling? Give each student a simplified spelling dictionary they can write in and keep! There is also a place at the bottom of each page for students to add words that they use often in their own writing. In the back of the booklet, I included the following word lists:

Words for good, nice, great
Words for went, ran
Words for said
Days of the week
Seasons
Months of the year
Holidays

Colors

Directions for a booklet, copy front and back. Then staple in the middle and fold over. No need for cutting!

FREE MATH LESSON – “Counting Coins Made Easy! (Sample Pages)”

by Nicole Rios

1st – 3rd Grade

Counting Coins Made Easy

Are your students having a difficult time with counting coins? The Magic Money method has worked for me for the last 9 years of teaching money to 1st and 2nd graders. This download includes:

– a chart that students might place in their homework/classroom folders with realistic, dual-sided pictures of each coin, coin values, a chant for each coin, and the placement of the dots that will aid them in counting the coins.

– a one-sheet parent explanation of how the Magic Money system works, and how to use it to help their child become successful at counting coins at home

– a hundred chart that specifically aids children in becoming fluent at counting by 5’s (a necessary sub-skill for using this method)

-a coin counting worksheet sample with answer key

-a sample word problem page

This method will work for the vast majority of your students. Don’t worry about them relying on the dots. With time, they will begin to chunk larger values together until they are counting coins in a more traditional way.

If you find this download helpful, this product is part of a larger download “Counting Coins Made Easy with Differentiated Materials” that you can find HERE.

I also offer an ActivInspire flipchart to accompany these learning materials HERE.

LANGUAGE ARTS – “Scooping Words with Two Closed Syllable”

Grades K-3

by Reading on Strawberry Lane

Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables.

Syllables can be divided by saying them orally or by using a pencil and paper. If we orally divide a word into syllables, we usually clap the word out. For example, if we orally divided the syllables of polish, we would clap out ‘pol’ and ‘ish,’ and that would be two claps. If we divided the syllables on paper, we would place a slash between the ‘l’ and ‘i’ in the word ‘pol/ish.’

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: p o l i s h. This way not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of a misplaced letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables.

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice scooping words with two closed syllables.

Simply print and cut along the guidelines. One idea is to print on card stock or on colored paper. Laminate and use them again and again and keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

Closed Syllable 2 Compressed

Fifty percent of our English language is closed syllable type words. Once a student learns this syllable type, they have a great foundation upon which to build. So it is a well worth our efforts to invest our time teaching this syllable type if we are going to have successful readers.I created this packet for my students to have fun learning closed syllable type words. There are 6 syllable types, and closed syllable is the most basic type to teach. There are multiple word lists in the unit, ‘Reading Closed Syllables.’ This reading unit provides 158 word lists of the closed syllable type words. Also, a master list of all the words is included as a quick reference. The lists in this unit include words spelled using each vowel in conjunction with common phonograms. These lists of words will help students recognize the common patterns seen in closed syllables. LANGUAGE ARTS – “Scooping Words With One Open Syllable & One Vowel-Consonant-e Syllable”

Grade 1-4

by Reading on Strawberry Lane

Scooping One Open and One V-C-eScooping One Open and One V-C-e -2

Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables.
Syllables can be divided by saying them orally or by using a pencil and paper. If we orally divide a word into syllables, we usually clap the word out. For example, if we orally divided the syllables of beside, we would clap out ‘be’ and ‘side,’ and that would be two claps. If we divided the syllables on paper, we would place a slash between the ‘e’ and ‘s’ in the word ‘beside.’

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: b e s i d e. Not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of an extra letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables.

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice
scooping words with one open syllable and one vowel-consonant-e
syllable. You will notice that quite a few prefixes are open syllables.

LANGUAGE ARTS – “BINGO with Vowel Digraph & Diphthong Words”

Grades 1-3

by Reading on Strawberry Lane

This fun game of BINGO gives students practice differentiating between vowel digraphs and vowel diphthong syllables. A vowel digraph is a syllable that has two vowels glued together whose sound will say one of the vowel sounds. A vowel diphthong is two vowels glued together or one vowel glued to the left of the letter -w whose sound will be unique to the combination of the two letters. After playing a few times, the students will catch on to these two different syllable types and will begin to quickly identify them and their sounds. There are two different bingo cards for the students, and there are 96 word cards–48 vowel digraph words and 48 vowel diphthong words.
