Learning sight words is such an important part of learning how to read. So make it fun!

There is NO PREP needed.


This freebie is part of a larger series. If you like what you see, check out our Dolch Sight Word Worksheet No-PREP Packet (3rd Grade) or our Dolch Sight Word Worksheet NO-PREP Value Bundle.

This freebie contains 5 sight words: if, long, about, got, six

Each page features a single target sight word with the following activities:

1. Read it and Color it Students will read the specified sight word aloud and color it in. This will help them build connections between the spoken and written word and pay attention to each letter.

2. Trace it Students will trace the specified sight word three times. This will help them practice good penmanship.

3. Find it Students will find and circle the specified sight word in the word search. This will help them practice and recognize the specified sight word. (They will also get to review the previous sight words at the same time.)

4. Fill in the missing letters Students will solve and fill in the missing letters. This will help them remember the spelling of the sight word.

5. Complete the sentence and Write one Students will write the specified sight word in the gap and read the sentence with the sight word. All of the sentences are designed to only include sight words that they have learned before (Dolch list) and simple phonetic (mostly cvc) words. Then they will write one sentence of their own. This will help them with reading fluency and writing.

6. Build it Students will cut and glue letters in the provided boxes to correctly build the given sight word. This will help them consolidate their memory of the sight word and practice their motor skills.

Ready to join the maker movement and incorporate some design thinking into your classroom at the same time?

I was inspired by the amazing book Make Writing, by Angela Stockman, to create this ELA maker space project. First, students create something using art or maker materials. Then, they write about it.

Students who struggle with writer’s block will find their ideas flowing better. Students who love art will connect more to their writing. Students will have a chance to really visualize aspects of their writing before they begin.

For this innovative creative writing unit, students will collaborate as a class to create the characters and settings of a fictional world they will then write about.

All students will make a character or setting out of whatever materials they choose, then present their maker pieces back to the class and display them.

Students will choose several characters and a setting or two and then write their stories, participating in a structured peer editing workshop before completing the final draft.

Finally, students will present their work to the world in whatever way they have chosen as a class, incorporating a final launch into the process that will give them an authentic audience and a more meaningful reason than a grade to take their work seriously.

This is a Daily 5 recording sheets for students to use as they complete the Daily 5 activities each day. This one page can be used for three weeks. I have each day in a different color because I color code my days (I use red marker Monday, orange on Tuesday, etc…). I am sure these look just as cute if you print them in black and white as well. This is another version of the Amazing Animals CVC words sorting game. This version is nonsense CVC words, instead of real words.

Students will use early learning decoding skills to read CVC nonsense words. To make the learning fun, students will then sort the CVC nonsense words by classifying the animals on the cards. Students will sort animals by zoo and farm animals. There is one extension activity that is available for this center/game. Students will record the CVC nonsense words, based on their animal classification.

Packet Rationale

The story is a fiction narrative based upon a child’s desire to have a pet, in this case, a dog. There are two formats for the story. The first format is 3 pages and uses illustrations in an attempt to create an emotional response to the characters in the story. The second format is 1 page and uses minimal graphics and no color for ease of printing if desired. Rhyming was used when possible to create a sense of familiar text style and form for young readers. At one time or another, most children wish for a pet or have had experiences with one in their own home or in the homes of friends or extended family. This common experience is used as a basis for some of the activities found in this packet.

CC.1.RL.1 – Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

CC.1.RL.2 – Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.

CC.1.RL.3 – Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

CC.1.OA.1 – Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems.

CC.1.OA.2 – Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20.

Halloween literacy practice has never been more fun! To play this literacy center game, students pick a pumpkin letter card and say its sound.

After saying their letter sound, students find the matching picture on the game board that starts with that beginning sound and cover it up with your choice of token. Candy corn and seasonal mini erasers add to the Halloween fun! Keep playing until the entire board is filled.

Print game boards and cards, one set per person. Cut apart cards. This is an individual game. It can be played in partners as a collaborative game, but there are no winners or losers. Very easy prep for an interactive game!

Extension page included to practice writing the beginning sound of Halloween words. Happy Halloween!

This is a sample of a year long common-core aligned interactive notebook writing program that improves student writing through sentence imitation (generative grammar). Each day, the teacher guides students through a scaffolded imitation of a sentence.

At the end of the week, students will use the sentence patterns they’ve experimented with to construct a paragraph. At the end of the six weeks, students will construct an essay using a variety of sentence patterns that they’ve experimented with.

Each of the six week sections deals with a different type of writing: Narrative 1 (Descriptive), Narrative 2 (Plot and Dialogue), Explanatory 1 (Develop Facts and Details), Explanatory 2 (Explain With Quotes and Graphics), Argumentative 1 (Point and Counter Point), and Argumentative 2 (Making Your Point With Reason and Evidence).

I have a year long common core aligned set of this writing program coming out for grades 11 &12, and 6, 7, & 8.

Have some Halloween fun with this read and color PPT activity! Students must color in and complete the Halloween picture by reading the information on each slide.

Kindly note that this file is only for use with PowerPoint software and will not work using Google Slides. Unfortunately, Google slides do not support timed transition of slides.

The slides are timed and change every minute. You can also click to change the slides. This PPT should keep your students actively engaged for at least 15 minutes, giving you some well deserved free time.

How to use:

Photocopy the answer sheet and hand out to each student

Check that each student has the correct color pencils or crayons (red, yellow, green, brown, orange and blue).

Start the PPT show in slidehow mode (full screen).

Click through and explain up to slide 4.

The PPT will run automatically from slide 5 (START slide) for 15 minutes.
