Langston Hughes Dreams

Langston Hughes poem DREAMS seems like a simple poem, yet it teaches wonderful lessons. Your students will relate to this poem as they discuss its meaning and connect their dreams and goals to the poem. Included are activities that motivate students to “follow their dreams” and to write dream poems.These are great activities for Black History Month and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.

This is a brand new updated version of my Langston Hughes “Dream” resource as of January 2015! There are student activity pages, others are teaching suggestions, suggested websites of other people who followed their dreams and became successful and other information.

Frindle Literature Guide 87 pages. This story raises the issue of “free speech” in the classroom. Does free speech include disrupting the teacher by using the word “frindle” instead of the word, pen? Have students read the informational background article about the Bill of Rights, specifically about freedom of speech and freedom of the press prior to reading the story.

Figurative Language Chart and Student Worksheets A very handy reference chart with examples of figurative language as well as other activities. Students use their copies of the chart as they work on written assignments in class. . A VERY popular resource all teachers must have!

Movie Review for Students Do your students take videos you show in class, seriously? Use the activities in this packet to keep your students focused as they watch videos in class. Add these sheets to your sub folder!

This is the Freebie Sample edition of the Main Idea, Inferences, Sequencing & Vocabulary for older students which has themes focused on Black History and works perfectly for Black History Month speech therapy sessions in middle school. Many of our speech and language therapy goals incorporate finding the main idea, explaining inferences and figurative language, remembering sequences, and defining vocabulary using context cues. This language therapy resource sample addresses all of these skills. Themed reading comprehension paragraphs are used to provide students with a relatable context. By giving the students this non-stressful context, they are more open to exploring the more challenging tasks they need to master. In the full sets, each seasonally appropriate theme also easily allows you to incorporate ancillary vocabulary that students can then use within the classroom and social settings.

There is an original fiction and nonfiction paragraph included for each theme. You can complete one sheet during a session and give the second as homework or if you see a student twice per week you will be able to use a different page for each session.

All pages are black and white so they are ink friendly and easy to copy. Answer keys are provided!!

These amazing worksheets also work for articulation students who need some language enrichment. Just print a page and hand them a highlighter ( my middle school students love the scented markers for this). After they find all of their sounds in the paragraph and highlight them, they can read the paragraph out loud. They can complete the lower half out loud and as a reinforcement at home.

As Sweet as Can Be is a writing prompt paper that can be used anytime of the year! I always use it around Valentine’s Day, but can be used in a candy unit or anytime you want your students to write some nice words about somebody else! I have students pick a student in the class and then they give it to them as a gift. No matter who you let them choose to write about, it’s a nice writing assignment for them to do!

The Barren Grounds by David A. Robertson is an engaging middle grade fantasy novel that was chosen as the middle grade option for 2021’s Global Read Aloud. The author is a a member of Norway House Cree Nation, and an important aspect of this novel is presenting the story to shine a light on indigenous culture and perspectives.

This resources lays a foundational background for students prior to reading the novel, and the activities included will give students the information they may need to understand the Indigenous topics and perspectives provided in the novel.

These assessments were designed to be used with Core Knowledge (CKLA) or Amplify Core Knowledge Domains/Knowledge strands. These assessments can be used in place of the thumbs up and thumbs down assessments which can be confusing for both students and parents.

Every assessment and mid-domain assessment containing thumbs up or thumbs down is included as well as any assessments that are just a row of name choices on the page. I did not recreate/reformat any assessments that ask students to circle a picture or write out a response.

Based on my popular bulletin board sets, my FREE Song or Poem quiz is all digital in Google Forms and can be shared with your students on a secured platform such as Google Classroom. It’s a perfect fun activity for distance learning!

The “quiz” includes 10 different quotes, asking students whether the quote is from a poem or from a song. It includes the answer key and source of the quotes.

I highly recommend this “quiz” is NOT graded for actual points, as it is meant to be a FUN activity and perfect for any poetry unit or if you just want to do something fun in class. The purpose of this activity is for students to see how musicians are influenced by poets and writers.

This zoo themed literacy pack includes a lesson plan, center work mats and story telling-sequencing visuals to help you teach using the book by Rod Campbell titled “Dear Zoo”.

• CCSS.ELA.SL.K.2– Confirm understanding of text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification is something is not understood

• CCSS.SL.K.1.– Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics

• CCSS.SL.K.1.6– Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly

• CCSS.SL.K.4– Describe familiar people, places, things and events and with prompt and support provide additional details

• CC.SS.RL.K.10– Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding

• CC.SS.RL.K.7– With prompt and support describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear.

Lesson plan Learning Objectives

• To listen to and participate in story telling (“Dear Zoo” by Rod Campbell)

• To talk about and express ideas about the story

• To sequence the events in the story: Beginning, middle and end

• To make sense of animals, their sizes and the possible box/basket they may fit into by problem solving, rationalizing and using prior knowledge from the book

Materials included in this package

• Color and sort the animals into correct boxes and baskets art activity

• Full large cut outs to use on bulletin boards or during your group time when you are reading the Dear Zoo story.

• Center work mats where students assemble the missing key words from the story to complete each sentence.
