Previous feedback I’ve received for my reading materials:

“Pretty sure I’ve never left feedback but true story – this resource is saving my life. I recently moved up to the high school level, in addition to taking on the role of program coordinator. Six weeks into the school year and the textbooks have still not been purchased and I’m in the depths of redesigning an ESL program. I’ve been out a lot for conferences and meetings, and not only is this resource easy for my paras to follow but it’s also great to build off of (or not!). Very low prep, full of engaging conversation topics, interesting articles, thorough comprehension questions and vocabulary tasks. You can follow the lesson plans to a T or create additional activities from the articles. I am able to use this for a 70-minute class, hitting all 4 domains, and sometimes we don’t even finish! Thank you!”

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “CVC Words Mystery Game for Pre-K”

by RoShamBo Homeschooling
Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

This free printable includes 5 worksheets for early readers to begin practicing middle sounds in CVC words. Each page is a “mystery” game with a vowel that has gone missing from every word on that page. Can you child be the detective that cracks the case of the missing CVC vowels?

What are CVC words?

CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant. Each CVC word is just 3 letters long and always in the consonant, vowel, consonant order. (So FLY is not a CVC word even though it’s only 3 letters long.)

Once your child understands the basics of beginning sounds, they can start thinking about MIDDLE SOUNDS. The middle sound in each CVC word is a vowel, so teaching CVC words also helps children begin to learn which letters are vowels.

CVC words are also a great way to start introducing phonics. Many CVC words can be taught in family sets that rhyme, which helps kids group new words together in a meaningful way that increases memory retention. For example, the “at” family includes at, cat, hat, mat, rat, and sat.

CVC Words Mystery Activity

This printable focuses on middle sounds in groups. Each word on a given page is missing the same middle sound (a vowel). Grouping CVC words like this helps kids cement their understanding of middle sounds even with a variety of word endings and beginnings. Introducing word families that rhyme (like the “at” family) is one way to start CVC words. If you want kids to practice truly sounding out each letter one-by-one, though, it’s helpful to try grouping CVC words by middle sound with different end sounds.

This game uses that method. The sheet that’s missing the ‘i’ sound has four words with different beginning and end sounds, but all with the same middle sound. (Lid, pig, pin, lip.) The sheet missing the ‘a’ sound includes sad, bag, cat, and fan.

This activity is most fun if played as a mystery game! Your kiddo must discover the missing vowel using their detective skills. Everything is in uppercase letters, so it’s okay if your child is still shaky on some of the lowercase letters like b/d differentiation.

Please let me know if you have any questions prior to purchasing.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “ELA Maker Project: Collaborative Maker Stories”

by Spark Creativity
9th – 12th Grade

Ready to join the maker movement and incorporate some design thinking into your classroom at the same time?

I was inspired by the amazing book Make Writing, by Angela Stockman, to create this ELA maker space project. First, students create something using art or maker materials. Then, they write about it.

Students who struggle with writer’s block will find their ideas flowing better. Students who love art will connect more to their writing. Students will have a chance to really visualize aspects of their writing before they begin.

From the Reviews:

  • ” So fabulous, great for a class that just wouldn’t engage!”
  • “I love art and the idea of combining it with ELA has always interested me. I am looking forward to working with my art department on this project. At this time, I plan to have their art pieces displayed in the halls and invite parents for a gallery walk to view the art and read the stories. “
  • “I am so excited to use this! This is just the creative angle I have been looking for when it comes to writing stories with my students. Thank you so much for sharing!”

For this innovative creative writing unit, students will collaborate as a class to create the characters and settings of a fictional world they will then write about.

All students will make a character or setting out of whatever materials they choose, then present their maker pieces back to the class and display them.

Students will choose several characters and a setting or two and then write their stories, participating in a structured peer editing workshop before completing the final draft.

Finally, students will present their work to the world in whatever way they have chosen as a class, incorporating a final launch into the process that will give them an authentic audience and a more meaningful reason than a grade to take their work seriously.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “1st Grade Reading Comprehension Passages & Questions (Dog) | 1st Grade Busy Work”

by Jason’s Online Classroom
1st Grade

Comprehensive common core aligned reading comprehension unit with a pet dog theme.

Related Reading Comprehension Products & Bundles

Reading Comprehension Bundle – 1st Grade

Packet Rationale

The story is a fiction narrative based upon a child’s desire to have a pet, in this case, a dog. There are two formats for the story. The first format is 3 pages and uses illustrations in an attempt to create an emotional response to the characters in the story. The second format is 1 page and uses minimal graphics and no color for ease of printing if desired. Rhyming was used when possible to create a sense of familiar text style and form for young readers. At one time or another, most children wish for a pet or have had experiences with one in their own home or in the homes of friends or extended family. This common experience is used as a basis for some of the activities found in this packet.

Common Core

CC.1.RL.1 – Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

CC.1.RL.2 – Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.

CC.1.RL.3 – Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

CC.1.RL.7 – Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

CC.1.RF.3 – Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

CC.1.L.4 – Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 1 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.

CC.1.L.1a-j – Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

CC.1.W.3 – Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure.

CC.1.W.8 – With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

CC.1.OA.1 – Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems.

CC.1.OA.2 – Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20.

CC.1.OA.4 – Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem.

CC.1.MD.1 – Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
