Comment Bank

Comment Bank

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Do you run out of meaningful criticism for your students’ high school papers and work?

I created this comment bank because I had the same problem. After a little while, you don’t know what to write on a student’s test.

The Comment Bank has been constructed to save the Language Arts teacher time when offering constructive and helpful comments on students’ evaluations. Marking papers in any Language Arts class is always a lengthy process. Increasingly, teachers are being asked to write more detailed comments to highlight students’ strengths and weaknesses, and sometimes we run out of ideas. Being the vigilant teachers we are, and wanting to help our students achieve their potential is and will always be one of our priorities. To this end, when marking students’ papers, writing down everything we want to say to them about their papers would be a very lengthy process. I have decided to share my personal comment bank with you.

The bank comments on the following areas:

-Structure
-Communication
-The next step
-Mechanics
-Style
-Persuasion
-Analysis

The package contains 7 pages of comments, which are divided by levels of accomplishment A, B, C and D. (levels 100 to 50)

Included in this package are over 120 comments for students. You can get inspiration from these pages to handwrite your comments, or you can do what I do and copy/paste your comments into a word document, print, and staple the comment to the students’ evaluations. This is a real time saver. Parents, students, and school administration LOVE this method of feedback. And, this way, it takes much less time to be much more efficient. I hope you enjoy it!

***IMPORTANT NOTE*** Please remember that if you are having technical difficulty grouping, ungrouping, cloning, doing screen shots etc as you start to personalize your files that these are issues you campus technician can help you with or you can email me to help you, however, these are not grounds for leaving a poor feedback. Learning to use Smart Notebook software can be difficult and frustrating at first until you get the hang of it, so please seek out help if you feel something is not working correctly as there is often an easy fix. Thanks!

Please also note – this is a Notebook file for use with Smartboards. I believe there are ways to convert these files to other formats however I do not know how to do this and therefore you would need to ask your campus technician if you are using a different type of board to see if it is compatible.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Adjective Graphic Organizer (FREE)”

by Jessica Osborne

2nd – 7th Grade

adjective-graphic-organizer

Adjectives! These wheels are used to help students practice creating interesting adjectives to describe nouns. The first page has the nouns listed for the students to describe as well as an example of what choosing an “interesting” adjective looks like. For example, “giant” instead of “big,” and “emerald” instead of “green”. The second page allows their imagination to lead them to choosing their own nouns to describe.

A group discussion after completing the first page would allow students to compare answers and share reasons for their adjective choices before going on to the second page on their own. This often leads to the students striving for even better, higher quality adjective choices on the second page.

Move on toward using adjectives in their writing with Adjectives Exploration!

Paragraph Writing Activity in conjunction with Frankenstein

Paragraph Writing Activity in conjunction with Frankenstein

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Paragraph Writing Activity in conjunction with Frankenstein

Very often, students have difficulty with the analysis process involved in literature. Where they not only have to analyse, but now have to apply their newfound skills to a well-developed paragraph, some students become overwhelmed with the process.

This particular activity will focus on both the analysis and writing a paragraph using the PEEL method.

Paragraph writing and analysis are two essential components in essay writing. To facilitate this process, I have created a lesson where students can become more comfortable with the revision process through modelling the proper steps from beginning to end. The lesson includes a modelling of the writing process from understanding the topic to the final draft. See preview for details

This lesson can only be used after students have read chapter 19 from the novel Frankenstein.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Saxon Phonics and Spelling Grade 1 Lesson 1 PowerPoint (First Grade)”

by Spinning a Yarn In First

1st Grade

saxon-phonics-and-spelling-grade-1

I have created Powerpoints to accompany my daily 1st grade Saxon Phonics Grade 1lessons. I wanted to have the words and sentences quickly on the board so I could focus more on the instruction. This lesson is the first Saxon Lesson. This comes from the week includes the introductions of letters and sounds of t, long and short o, n, and p.

Powerpoints will be added in weekly groupings. You can find the first week of Saxon here Saxon Phonics and Spelling Grade 1 Lessons 1 – 5 Powerpoints

Entire year of PowerPoints available here:

Saxon Phonics and Spelling PPT Bundle

The slides only include items that students must see or must be written on the board. I have found these to encourage my kiddos to be more attentive to review on a daily basis. The general nature and spiral review of these powerpoints would lend itself well to any phonics program.

These materials were prepared by a teacher in the Dyer County Schools (Holice Powell Elementary School) and have neither been developed, reviewed, nor endorsed by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company, publisher of the original SAXON PHONICS AND SPELLING 1 work on which this material is based.

By Sparking Children’s Thinkibility

Grades Kindergarten -4th Grade

Be inspired by Halloween!

thumbnail_fullsizerender-jpg-3

I have packed several different types of activities in this package. Lots of fun and engaging math problems, biomimicry, and creative writing prompts.

1. Spot bats, toadstools, and treats.

Fun activities where the children are asked to make up their own math problems. Children often enjoy creating their own problems. This approach requires a deeper reflection upon numbers and basic arithmetic operations as compared to only providing an answer.

Halloween inspired multiplication and division cards. Students can make their own problems. Color and black and white versions.

2. Invent a toy inspired by jumping spiders.

Enter the fascinating world of spooky animals and tasty vegetables – from spiders to aye-aye with a witch-like long bony middle finger. Use the observations to design toys and solve problems.

Lessons about biomimicry require a brave approach to teaching since there is a move away from an approach where teachers are asking questions and looking for quick answers. Instead, young learners are given an opportunity to shape and explore their own ideas. Biomimicry and bioinspiration are constantly evolving and new ideas are explored to solve problems and designing innovations.

3. 16 writing prompts

Evaluating a Fishbowl Activity in a Literature Circle

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Evaluating-a-Fishbowl-Activity-in-a-Literature-Circle-694363

Evaluating a Fishbowl Activity in a Literature Circle

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Fishbowl activity is mostly useful during literature circles or in a novel study. Quite literally, the group in the center is being watched by the rest of the class, while they are discussing elements of fiction. This activity is a very important tool in order to teach students how group discussions should run, what is to be said, and how it is to be said. Many times the leader of the discussion doesn’t know how to prompt members to elaborate upon their contributions. This will certainly help.

In addition, it is often difficult for a teacher to evaluate these discussions, which is the reason I have created this package. It is easy to use and you can merely check boxes to quickly assess each member of the groups.

This package contains:
• An explanation of The Fishbowl Activity
• How to run a Fishbowl Activity (within the realm of a literature circle)
• Why such an activity is important
• Evaluation sheets one can use to easily evaluate the discussions and roles of students
