9/11 A Teachable Moment in History
By Deann Marin of Socrates Lantern

I remember September 11 as if it were yesterday. I woke up to a spectacular morning, not a cloud in the deep blue sky. The day was simply perfect.  I went through my usual morning routine, got in my car and drove to work thinking about my class and the kind of day it would be. I arrived at school, went to my room to gather my thoughts and prepare for what was ahead. Soon my students began to trickle into homeroom, announcements over and Channel One, our news channel had ended. We had our morning meeting, switched classes and World History began.Today’s students didn’t experience this and it’s history to them.  Many weren’t born yet and those that were, are too young to remember. It’s up to us to help them understand what happened that day and to never forget.

I Love You California
By Kathie Yonemura of Tried and True Teaching

I’m always surprised when my students seem to not know much about their city, let alone the state they live in.  A terrific way to assess what your students know before you begin to teach geography is to ask them to draw their state and everything and anything they know about it. They are encouraged to label cities, attractions, bordering states, etc.

It’s a great way to set the tone for a year of building mathematically powerful students and practice algebraic thinking at the same time! In this task, students analyze equations and determine a number, from a set of 0 – 9 labeled tiles, to represent each symbol. Each tile represents one and only one symbol. An answer key is included in the download.

Free Easy Student Product Activity Page for Open House

Looking for some great student products for your Open House display?

I’ve got a great math-related activity to share with you! This activity is one that I have used to create a cover page in students’ math notebooks, but it’s such a fun activity that it makes for a great display for Open House or Back to School Night. It’s also a fun way to show students how they can communicate with numbers and an opportunity for students to get creative and show off their individual style.

I give students a guideline for how to format the page and a list of statements to get them started (see below), but the creativity level is left entirely to them.
As an optional way to present the numbers, you can have students write them in one of the following formats:
* expanded notation- (Example: 10,000 x 1 + 1,000 x 3 + 100 x 5 + 10 x 6 + 1 x 8 days on Earth.)
* expanded form- (Example: I traveled 1000 + 200 + 70 + 8 miles to the beach this summer.)
* mathematical expressions- (Example: My birthday is on the (75 + 30)th day of the year.)

Summer PD: Part 2- Using Observations as Formative Assessment Tools

Welcome back! Today’s post is part two of my summer blog series focused on formative assessments. Last week, I gave a quick overview of formative assessments, the purpose and the importance of them, how teachers are currently using them in the classroom. Then, I offered a new perspective on how we can use formative assessments in the classroom to inform planning and teaching. This new perspective is one that I formed while reading the book, The Formative 5. (Missed last week’s post? See it here!)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY_Ihr3vpQk]

Don’t see the video? Click here to see the video version of this post!

In this book, the authors introduce five techniques that teachers can use every day to formally assess their students. These five techniques are in many ways simple but very powerful ways to better understand what our students know and understand about the content and skills that we’re teaching. In part one of the series, I described these learning tools as assessments done with intention and in the moment. As we continue through the series, I would like for us to look at the assessment tools with that lens, both with intentionality and in the moment.

The first technique is observations. I know what you’re thinking, you’re saying to yourself, “Why is observation a formative assessment tool?” I personally thought the exact same thing, but as I read the book and delved more into the section about observations, I begin to understand more clearly. We make observations about what our students are doing all the time, but we don’t always formally record the observations and then take that information and do something with it later. We often kind file it in the back of our minds and utilize it later, but more often than not, we take those observations and just file them for use later. In this case, we’re going to take the observations and we’re going to use them and do something with them immediately.

Summer PD: Part 1- What’s All This talk about Formative Assessments?

I’m so exciting to begin my 2017 Summer PD series with you today! When I attended the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) annual conference this past April, one of the bestselling books was a new book called The Formative 5 by Skip Fennell, Beth Kobett, and Johnathan Wray, which offers teachers five everyday assessment techniques to inform your planning and instruction. Through the Summer PD series, I will be discussing each of the techniques and offering ways to get started using them in school next August. You can even catch a video summarizing the week’s learning over on Facebook or my YouTube Channel. Ready? Let’s dive right in!

What is a Formative Assessment?

Assessing what our students know and are able to do is part of what we do as educators each and every day; however, the type of assessment we use differs from day to day. Sometimes, we want to assess our students’ understanding of the last unit or set of skills. In this case, we use a summative assessment—a tool that will allow us to assess students’ overall understanding of content and skills. A summative assessment can be a unit or chapter test, district-created benchmark test, high-stakes test, etc. Summative test results are often used to determine classroom or grade-level interventions.

On the other hand, formative assessments tend to be more fluid and vary widely. Formative assessments provide evidence and information that is used as feedback to make changes to the teaching and learning process. A formative assessment, sometimes referred to as assessment for learning, can be anything that will provide the necessary information to inform the instructional practices of teachers.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Simple Addition Story Problems for Adding 3 Numbers SmartBoard Lesson”

by Lisa Rombach

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

My “draw it, solve it, write the fact” SmartBoard lessons have been so popular, I am posting this addition for free as a thank you to all my customers. The file contains a teacher’s notes page and 11 “draw it, solve it, write the fact” pages. I use the first one for modeling. Each page has a simple addition story problem, an area to “draw it” (drag and drop the graphic set on infinite clone – makes the lesson interactive) and a space to write the fact. Pages can be printed and copied so students record at their seats OR have them solve on slates and place the printed pages in a center for extra practice. Help your K-2 students learn how to solve problems adding 3 numbers (sums are under 20).

You must have Smart Notebook software to open this lesson.
A PDF version of this lesson is available (also for free) here:
