……………………………………………………………………………….

I created this resource to help students read complex texts independently and for a specific purpose. I’ve researched several strategies for close reading and have developed a process that will make your teaching more effective, and help your students develop skills to read for deeper meaning.

This resource contains everything you will need to implement close reading in your classroom! I’ve included THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF THE PASSAGE for you to easily differentiate in your classroom! There are also text-dependent questions and a writing prompt for your students to cite evidence from the text.

In addition, with all of the cross-curricular themes included in the passages, you can also use this pack during science, to study planets, space, and more!

Included in this resource:

One Leveled Passage:
Included in this resource is one planet-themed reading passages. The passage contains text features that your students must analyze. There are three levels of the passage so you can easily differentiate with your students. The levels are based on word count and Lexile levels which can be found in the top left corner of each passage.

The Perfect Planet – Lexile: 960L
The Perfect Planet – Lexile: 780L
The Perfect Planet – Lexile: 660L

Understanding the Standards Teacher Guide
This printable helps teachers understand the purpose of each reading, and how each reading ties into specific Common Core Anchor Standards. I’ve outlined what each student should focus on, and the learning targets for each reading.

Printable Implementation Guide
This printable gives step-by-step instructions for implementing close reading in your classroom. It can be used as your own personal reference and/or can be handed out to students prior to the first read. I’ve also included this printable with a spring theme.

Printable Annotation Guides (Mark Up the Text)
These printable annotation guides help students quickly annotate or mark up the text using symbols. I’ve included two different levels of this resource.

Printable Close Reader Poster
This poster is a visual reminder to help students understand their role as a close reader.

Text-Dependent Questions and Writing Prompts
The passage includes text-dependent questions for each of the three themes or categories in the Common Core Anchor Standards (Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, and Integration of Knowledge and Ideas). The passage also includes one writing prompt that is to be completed after the third read. This writing prompt requires students to synthesize or make connections by combining their thinking and knowledge with evidence from the text. Answer keys are included.

Graphic Organizers
In addition to the text-dependent questions, I’ve also included the following graphic organizers:
•Key Ideas and Details Graphic Organizer (with and without lines)

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Using a Graph to Find Area: A Science Skill Lab for Grades 6-12”

by Amy Brown Science

7th – 12th Grade

Science Skill Lab: Using a Graph to Find Area

Purpose: In this activity, you will be using a sample of ordinary poster board with uniform thickness to study area. This is an activity that can be used to teach basic graphing skills as well as the use of basic pieces of lab equipment – the ruler and the balance.

Materials needed: Balance, 4 samples of poster board of regular shape, 1 irregular sample, graph paper, ruler, pencil.

Your download will include Title, Purpose, Introduction, Materials, Safety Precautions, Procedure, Analysis Questions, Student Data Pages, Answers to all Questions, and Teacher Preparation Notes.

New Interactive HTML5 Science Lessons!

Try of demonstration:

VOLCANO Interactive HTML5 or click the image

New Interactive HTML5 Lessons are complete single topic Science lessons that put the student in charge of their own learning.  Concepts are INTRODUCED with interactive elements requiring input from the student and providing immediate feedback based on the student’s responses.   Students then EXPLORE to further expand their understanding with Hands-On projects and Lab activities.  Next, students INVESTIGATE by assembling, researching, and completing Infographic pages that serve as a graphic representation of what they have learned and make great additions to their Interactive Notebook!  In the next phase of each lesson, students ELABORATE and COMMUNICATE by collaborating with others to complete a project design to incorporate 21st Century Learning Skills.  Finally, students CHECK THEIR LEARNING by taking a quiz to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts.  The quiz is immediately graded and scored and students get immediate results.  If they do not pass, they can go back and review the lesson and then retake the quiz.
HTML 5 Interactive Lessons will work on any device with an internet connection (Mac, PC, Chromebook, iPad, etc.) and with the quickstart link and password provided, students can begin immediately with no setup or prep from the teacher (eventually the teacher will need to set up labs and run off copies of activities for students to complete the hands-on activities).  Each lesson comes packaged to allow upload to an LMS (Blackboard, Moodle, Schoology, etc), if desired, and includes instructions, lab setup directions, and answer keys.
To get started instantly, each lesson can be launched from www.gonyoscience.com.  Just give your students the link and password (provided upon purchase).

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Microsoft Word Game”

by MrsTech

1st – 4th Grade

This is an activity that I used in my Elementary Tech classes to refresh what we learned last year about Microsoft Word basics.

Directions: Students will start with their name on their computer. They will then rotate every 30 seconds to answer one of the following questions that I call out. Think of this as a teacher directed game of SCOOT. If you have older students, you could also print these out as task cards. The students will have a good time laughing at their “Fake About Me” when they get back to their seat. After a quick refresher of where to locate the following items, I had the students change fonts, colors, and sizes of text as well as adding pictures of the items in their lists.

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Natural Disaster QR Vocabulary Sort”

by Texas Science Gal

5th – 8th Grade

natural-disaster-qr-vocabulary-sort

In this download there are 5 different natural disaster vocabulary words and QR codes. This download focuses on the natural disasters that have strong impacts on the ecosystems including tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanoes.

To use this, simply print these out for a group of 2-4 and have students sort out all of the cards. Once students have sorted the codes, you can give them the guided questions to help with comprehension. This helps assess what they have learned and put it into writing. There is also an answer key provided. I find that it makes a great way to integrate technology, get students hands on, and to reinforce the content knowledge.

Grades Kindergarten -4th Grade

Be inspired by Halloween!

thumbnail_fullsizerender-jpg-3

I have packed several different types of activities in this package. Lots of fun and engaging math problems, biomimicry, and creative writing prompts.

1. Spot bats, toadstools, and treats.

Fun activities where the children are asked to make up their own math problems. Children often enjoy creating their own problems. This approach requires a deeper reflection upon numbers and basic arithmetic operations as compared to only providing an answer.

Halloween inspired multiplication and division cards. Students can make their own problems. Color and black and white versions.

2. Invent a toy inspired by jumping spiders.

Enter the fascinating world of spooky animals and tasty vegetables – from spiders to aye-aye with a witch-like long bony middle finger. Use the observations to design toys and solve problems.

Lessons about biomimicry require a brave approach to teaching since there is a move away from an approach where teachers are asking questions and looking for quick answers. Instead, young learners are given an opportunity to shape and explore their own ideas. Biomimicry and bioinspiration are constantly evolving and new ideas are explored to solve problems and designing innovations.

3. 16 writing prompts

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Earth & Space Science + Scientific Process Classroom Clash Game – like Jeopardy”

by The Science Vault

5th – 9th Grade

Earth & Space Science

This is a powerpoint game similar to Jeopardy (TM). The six topics covered are: Scientific Method, Scientific Measurement, SI Units, The Earth, Earth Processes, and Space. Each topic has six questions arranged like Jeopardy: generally, the more money the question is worth, the harder the question. Great as a review or a back-to-school launch in an Earth Science class to get an idea about what your students already know. Jeopardy games are a great way to do something fun and challenging – I like to use them as a formative assessment in the beginning of a unit (or, in this case, a course), as a review, or even the last 20 minutes of class on a Friday 🙂

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Free Soil Lab”

by The Science Penguin

3rd – 5th Grade

Free Soil Lab

This soil freebie will help you and your students observe soil samples and test their capacity to retain water.

It contains recommendations and student recording pages.

Directions:
Set up 4 stations for students to record data. Include a different soil sample at each station. I like using gravel, sand, potting soil or loam, and clay. Each station should have a small container of the soil particles (like a petri dish), a graduated cylinder, funnel, and coffee filter.

Go over the question and write a hypothesis.

As a class, put 40 mL of water in each funnel containing a coffee filter and funnel with the particles inside. Allow time for the water to pass through the coffee filter and into the graduated cylinder.

Then, have students visit the stations to record their observations. Create a chart and graph of the data, draw conclusions, and answer the question.
