FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Bugs and Critters! Be an Entomologist”

by Growing Smart Readers

Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

GRAB A MAGNIFYING LENS and GO!

This is a revised freebie!

This “Critter Craze” resource gives your kids a chance to get out of the classroom and be an entomologist. They may find all kinds of bugs, not just insects…but even spiders. Be sure to tell them that entomologists study insects as well as other bugs. While insects do have 6 legs, they may find a spider to write about.

The “jar” graphic allows them the opportunity to draw their many-legged critter. Follow up with a mini research for more information about their new-found specimen.

2 report frames (differentiated) are included.

I hope your kids have a great time with this Critter Craze activity, and perhaps it will be a great jumpstart for writing an insect report.

Have fun with this, but remind students to RELEASE THEIR BUGS back into the wild after studying them.

If you like this lesson activity, and your kids had fun finding an insect and writing about it, you may want to check out: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Animal-Report-Writing-to-Inform-Templates

Our kiddos aren’t immune, they see what’s going on and may not know how to deal.

Getting Your Classroom NGSS Ready

Getting Your Classroom NGSS Ready

Is your classroom NGSS ready? As primary teachers, you know the importance of building the foundations with your young students during the year to support their futures as students, lifelong learners, and informed citizens. A critical component of these educational foundations is science! But, where do you start?
There are many questions to consider as you plan for a successful year of science learning. What initial steps will you take with NGSS?
As I head into the new school year, I wanted to focus on making my classroom NGSS ready.  I started with a very basic focus wall that included the standard being studied, key vocabulary, essential question and “I can” statement. This way, anyone who walks into my classroom will know what we are currently focusing on.  Check out my 4th grade poster set for an idea of what should be on your focus wall!
I also created a space in the room that houses my new and improved science centers, science materials, exploration materials and science books.
I can’t wait for my students to dive into these new standards!

I created this resource to help students read complex texts independently and for a specific purpose. I’ve researched several strategies for close reading and have developed a process that will make your teaching more effective, and help your students develop skills to read for deeper meaning.

This resource contains everything you will need to implement close reading in your classroom! I’ve included THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF THE PASSAGE for you to easily differentiate in your classroom! There are also text-dependent questions and a writing prompt for your students to cite evidence from the text.

In addition, with all of the cross-curricular themes included in the passages, you can also use this pack during science, to study planets, space, and more!

Included in this resource:

One Leveled Passage:
Included in this resource is one planet-themed reading passages. The passage contains text features that your students must analyze. There are three levels of the passage so you can easily differentiate with your students. The levels are based on word count and Lexile levels which can be found in the top left corner of each passage.

The Perfect Planet – Lexile: 780L
The Perfect Planet – Lexile: 660L

Understanding the Standards Teacher Guide
This printable helps teachers understand the purpose of each reading, and how each reading ties into specific Common Core Anchor Standards. I’ve outlined what each student should focus on, and the learning targets for each reading.

Printable Implementation Guide
This printable gives step-by-step instructions for implementing close reading in your classroom. It can be used as your own personal reference and/or can be handed out to students prior to the first read. I’ve also included this printable with a spring theme.

Printable Annotation Guides (Mark Up the Text)
These printable annotation guides help students quickly annotate or mark up the text using symbols. I’ve included two different levels of this resource.

Printable Close Reader Poster
This poster is a visual reminder to help students understand their role as a close reader.

Text-Dependent Questions and Writing Prompts
The passage includes text-dependent questions for each of the three themes or categories in the Common Core Anchor Standards (Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, and Integration of Knowledge and Ideas). The passage also includes one writing prompt that is to be completed after the third read. This writing prompt requires students to synthesize or make connections by combining their thinking and knowledge with evidence from the text. Answer keys are included.

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Using a Graph to Find Area: A Science Skill Lab for Grades 6-12”

by Amy Brown Science

7th – 12th Grade
