We Teach So Hard…Episode #6…Building Relationships 101

In this latest episode of WE TEACH SO HARD, we explore ways to build relationships with parents and students and share some humor along the way. Give it a listen for some tips and tricks to make your start to the school year smooth one.

I had to miss recording this podcast so I wanna share some advice from my many years, on the front lines, as a middle school teacher.  The kids are a different breed, pubescent, beautiful, intelligent, wonderful to teach, great sense of humor, with one foot in childhood and the other in adolescence. Once those hormones take over, teaching them becomes more of a challenge.

  • Have morning meetings, many children come from conflicted homes and just need time to get things off their chests.
  • Once they’re able to say what’s on their minds, most will be able to get to work.
  • Talk to them, be humanistic, use humor and be able to laugh at yourself, if you make mistake admit to it, they’ll realize everyone makes mistakes and that’s ok.
  • Find the time to talk to them. It will help you understand what makes them tick. I spent time during home room chatting with each student. It means the world to them and they’ll remember you for it.
  • Keep in contact with parents, let them know that you truly care for their child, and are there for them. #halfthebattleiswon
  • Be  yourself when speaking with parents, joke with them, it breaks the ice. Let them see your true personality as well as your humanity.
  • This is a biggee!!! If you have something negative to say about Johnny, begin with the positive and end with a positive. It’ll make parents feel a little better and they’ll respect what you have to say much more. Best of all, you’ll be working as a team for the betterment of their child.
  • When you need help with something, ask the parents, they’ll be there with bells on. When my students wrote and performed Greek plays, parents helped with costumes/scenery. annnd of course loved seeing their child’s performance.
  • If a parent gets angry and says something you don’t like, don’t react with anger. Take a deep breath, answer calmly and honestly.  I know, I know, sometimes you just wanna use some 4 letter words and tell them off, but don’t do it!

Here’s a link to our podcast on iTunes.

Like what you hear? Then CHECK US OUT! We blog weekly…and it’s good stuff…meaty stuff…stuff you wanna have…we promise!

Senior Language Arts Learning Goals Posters

Product Description

Senior Language Arts Learning Goals Poster

Learning goals are important for our students’ education and learning. When we have a goal in mind when teaching, everything else serves a specific purpose, and everything seems to fall into place. As teachers, we are asked to display these learning goals in our classroom, but for me, this wasn’t possible.

With 30 plus students in my class, I didn’t have time to write my learning goals on chart paper or display them on the board. Hmmm… what’s a girl to do?

I created these posters to make my life, as well as yours, easier. This bundle offers ALL of the senior, (grade 12) goals and is in line with the Common Core as well as the Canadian curriculums.

The bundle includes:

A 14-page checklist of all of the learning goals, which can help the teacher keep track of what’s been covered and what hasn’t.

55 Learning Goal posters (8×11) that can easily be posted on the bulletin board or the chalkboard at the front of the class.

These posters allow students to track learn the focus of the lesson.

Three strands are covered: (with the focus of each poster clearly indicated)
1) Reading and Interpretation
2) Writing and Representation
3) Oral and Oral-Visual Communication

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE Book Review Labels/Inserts: Classroom Library and More!”

by Secondary Sara

1st – 12th Grade

Give your classroom library a word-of-mouth makeover, and give students ownership of recommending (and choosing) their own books!

The template makes labels that fit inside the cover of almost any paperback or hardcover novel. (When cut out, it is approximately 3.5×6”, and I haven’t had trouble taping it inside even my small paperbacks so far!)

The form is quick and easy for students to fill out, and it tells students what they REALLY want to know about a book before they begin reading, including difficulty level, whether or not it’s engaging, and if the book is “worth it”.

BONUS: You also get a blank template in case you want to rate books with a different scale or ask different questions! 🙂

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “College Letter Application Example”

by The English Teacher’s Pet

11th – 12th Grade

This application letter is ready to review as a good example for college admissions!

In teaching my juniors how to create their own letter for their college applications, I re-created my own college letter. It is less than five hundred words (standard length colleges and universities are asking for) and answers several general questions of telling Admissions more about yourself, what kind of experiences you may bring to the campus, what inspires a student to lead… it even can be used as an example for private colleges with religious affiliations.

Spelling Flip Book

Product Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flip book when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Place Value Practice Ones Tens Hundreds SmartBoard Lesson”

by Lisa Rombach

1st – 2nd Grade

This smart board lesson was created to provide students with place value practice activities (ones, tens, hundreds). Students will view and use digital base ten blocks to identify, understand and create 3 digit numbers. Some pages can be used while students use their own base 10 blocks and mats.

The file includes a teacher’s notes page, interactive pages, links to interactive websites and links to printable worksheets.

Some pages could be used for instruction and modeling. Use a few pages as a warm up to your math lesson, use a group of the pages as a practice lesson or use a single page. The file is very flexible. I included a few “master” pages where you can create additional practice pages by typing in your own numbers.

I am posting this lesson for FREE as a thank you to all my customers!!! Thank you, thank you for using my smart board lessons in your classrooms! I am honored that my lessons are a part of your educational materials. 🙂 Lisa Rombach

Sentences – Grammar Circles for easy and effective grammar

Sentences – Grammar Circles for easy and effective grammar

Product Description
Teach grammar in a creative and meaningful way. No more boring grammar. grammar

Simplify your life and make grammar fun and effective.

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit in grammar with everything else I had to teach. I would give students grammar pages, and then we would correct them together. It was tedious, and it took forever! What’s more is that students were not learning the way I wanted them to. They wouldn’t apply what they had learned from the grammar pages and activities.

I found a solution!

Grammar Circles. Grammar Circles are very similar to literature circles in the sense that students are teaching one another grammar. It is a fun and functional way to teach and learn grammar. Although this may be done individually, it can also be completed as a group where students, through a specific process outlined in the package, teach one another grammar. They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes, directions, and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (16 pages)
Activities included focus on:
-the logistics of the sentence (the basic parts)
-the prepositional phrase
-the adjective phrase
-the adverb phrase
-the verbal phrase
-the appositive phrase
-the independent and subordinate clauses
-subjects and predicates
-fragments
-run-on sentences
-types of sentences

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their work and learn from one another.

For those who are from Ontario, Canada – this unit adheres to the Grade 9 English Curriculum (academic). The unit can be taught in any grade to about sentences.

Poetry Unit (for senior students)

Product Description
Poetry Unit for Senior Students (Bundled)

I love poetry! I love reading it, I love teaching it, and I love the discussions I can have with my students because of it. May students (and some teachers) dislike poetry because they think it’s too difficult. I once had a student tell me that poetry was like a “code” that needed to be unlocked. Cringe!! Some poems are meant to be analyzed. Some poems and meant to sound beautiful, and some poems are meant to be simple and enjoyed for what they are. This unit has a little of all of those things.

Students love this poetry unit. It is a complete unit with no prep required on the teacher’s part. This 2 and a half week unit includes a student guide, 12 detailed lesson plans, two multimedia presentations (no internet connection required), a complete answer key with annotated poems (this is a teacher favorite!) , and an end of the unit evaluation with answer key.

Just print it and teach it. It really is that easy.

This bundle includes individual lessons devised to teach students the importance of:

• Figurative language (its uses and effects)
• How to read poetry
• How to understand and apply symbolism and imagery
• The importance of rhythm
• The importance of tone and attitude in a poem
• Types of poetry
• How to analyze poetry
• How to appreciate poetry (even when you don’t understand it)
• Includes some Canadian poetry

This unit’s focus is the analysis of poetry and teaches students how to make inferences, which is a skill they must learn for their other subjects as well.

Poems include authors such as Emily Dickenson, Dorothy Parker, Maya Angelou, Thomas Gray, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Alfred Noyes, T.S. Eliot, Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Frost, Pearl Jam, Langston Hughes, Margaret Atwood, and Walt Whitman. The Unit includes 21 different poems.

The unit has been conceived to last 15 days – with 65 minute periods (although they are easy to modify).

The unit includes:

1 – The teacher guide (Contains 12 comprehensive lesson plans to teach the poems included in the unit. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO TEACH THIS UNIT HAS BEEN DONE FOR YOU. )

2 – The student package (Contains students’ notes, poems, and questions) (28 pages)

3 – The answer key includes annotated poems and answers to all student activities, as well as an example of paragraph developing a theme in poetry (saving you time).

4 – Included is a test with multiple choice questions as well as one development question. All answers are included. (Word format for easy changes)

5 – 2 PowerPoint presentations – one multimedia presentation to introduce the unit (17 slides) and the second to reinforce the use of imagery and symbolism (19 slides) – NO INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED

A total of 68 pages + 36 slides are included in this package.

This unit is complete and does all of the thinking for you. All you need to do is to print out and photocopy the student package, and you’re set.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Analyzing Fiction Activity: Tell Me a Story”

by Connie

6th – 12th Grade

This FREE activity enables Middle School and High School students to develop both their analytic and creative skills.

First, the students review a list of 12 qualities of Strong Fiction and analyze their personal examples for each of the various criteria. For an activity that focuses on this aspect of writing, check out
Writing: Critique Group Exit Slip

Next, they write examples of Specific Characters, General Objects, Specific Objects, Adjectives, Abstract Nouns and Setting on 3′ x5′ pieces of construction paper color-coded to match the topics.

Finally, they select the basic bones of their story from the cards the class made in the prior segment of this activity and then they write either an individual story or a collaborative piece in groups of three. Whichever writing idea teachers don’t select can be used for another lesson at a later date. This idea will jump-start their thinking Writing: Start Strong!

This Common Core and Bloom’s Taxonomy aligned activity offers students a chance to analyze fiction for specific criteria, and to exhibit how they can combine these criteria with the elements of literature to create a durable story that SHOWS instead of TELLS.

Using a class-created Strong Fiction criteria list, students analyze writing for the qualities they chose as the most important, and then they create their own stories. Students love to tell stories. Let them do this in writing where they can combine their creative ideas with their growing writing and thinking skills.

Get more details about this idea on my blog:http://teachitwrite.blogspot.com/2013/06/tell-me-story.html

Here’s another idea to download that will promote deeper comprehension as well as creative and narrative writing skills –

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Je travaille mon vocabulaire: La salle de classe {French Vocabulary Practice}”

by Ms Joanne

1st – 10th Grade

Help your beginning French language students develop their vocabulary by playing a matching game, illustrating simple sentences, reading the words in context and making up silly sentences. Use the included illustrated word wall to introduce the new target vocabulary and as a reference tool for students. This resource was developed for Grade 1 French Immersion students but could be used effectively with most beginning French classes. {La description en français se trouve ci-dessous, suivant l’anglais}

This set practices 18 words. Using the materials in this packet, students can practice the target vocabulary in numerous ways:
Play an active matching game that lets them walk around the classroom. Students look for their matching card by asking and answering questions in French using the target vocabulary. Detailed instructions are included.
• Use the matching game cards for a “concentration” game in small groups.
Read sentences using the target vocabulary in context, with an image to use as a picture clue.
• Laminate the 2 pages of context sentences and use them in a reading centre, either for individual reading or in pairs.
• Cut the images from the context sentences and have the students match them up again correctly.
• Similarly teachers can separate the images from the word wall and have the students match them up again.
Illustrate simple sentences that use the target vocabulary in context.
• Have students orally invent sentences using the target vocabulary and record them on an i-pad or other recording device. If no recording device is available students can take turns in small groups making sentences that use the target vocabulary. Silly sentences, provided they are grammatically correct, are encouraged and can be modeled ahead of time by the teacher.
• Students can listen to the recorded sentences and write down their favorites.
• A copy of the illustrated word wall can be kept by each student to be used as a reference in writing and reading activities as the year continues.

This is a FREE sample from a series of vocabulary practice sets. Other vocabulary practice sets you may be interested in:

En utilisant les matériaux trouvés dans cet ensemble de 18 mots les élèves peuvent :

S’il n’y a pas d’appareil électronique mettre les élèves en petits groupes et leur demander de créer et partager des phrases. Les phrases un peu bêtes sont encouragées si elles sont grammaticales. L’enseignant(e) peut fournir plusieurs exemplaires avant l’activité.

A Good Book Can Start the Year Off Right
By Tracy Willis of Wild Child’s Mossy Oak Musings

My room has a lot of soul. I learned early on in my career that a good book can change my classroom world, create a paradigm shift, and cultivate respect, empathy, imagination and empowerment. I moved around a lot early in my career, so I needed to take those powerful books with me. I never stopped hoarding. Let me tell you about some of my back-to-school teaching treasures.

Tried & True Picture Books to Begin the Year
By Kathie Yonemura of Tried & True Teaching Tools

You’re never too old to be read to and who doesn’t love a good picture book? I always begin the school year reading picture books to my class, rather than jumping right into a novel. (And I continue to read them throughout the year!) There are so many great themes in pictures books, as well as starting points for meaningful discussion.

Read Aloud Books for the Beginning of the Year in Middle School

By Deann Marin of Socrates Lantern

As Teachers, we want our students to step over stumbling blocks, and not be intimidated by obstacles that stand in their way. We want them to realize that they can do anything they set their minds to. Characters in novels can help them overcome these challenges head on, and develop strategies to alleviate them. The books I’ve chosen to share with you are humorous, thought provoking, and great for 6th graders.
