FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON – “French Gothic Cathedral Tour Project”

by Andy Runyan

7th – 12th Grade

French Gothic Cathderal Tour Project

This file is a MS Word document that outlines our French Gothic Cathedral Tour project in AP Art History. I have also used it in World History classes. Students are divided into groups and allowed to select a Gothic Cathedral.

We act as if we are going on a trip to France and each group has to convince the teacher that their building is the one to visit. Lots of fun and kids with an artistic side have a chance to create and show off their talents.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Rewriting / Revision Hands-on Activity”

by Laura Torres

7th – 12th Grade

Revision Hands-on Activity

Rewriting / Revision Hands-on Activity. This exercise illustrates to students exactly why revision and rewriting is a necessary part of the writing process. It is helpful to do this activity just before a group critique or feedback session on rough drafts. This is a favorite activity in my first-year college composition class, but I have also used it in classrooms for grades 6 and up with great success.

You could also modify this lesson to work simply as an instruction-writing exercise.

Poetry Lesson on Sonnets (Shakespeare and Browning)

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Lesson on Sonnets

This mini bundle includes a sonnet from William Shakespeare (#130) and a sonnet from Elizabeth Browning (How do I Love Thee?). In this activity, students will compare the different tones and forms from both poems. One is beautiful and romanticizes love, and the other sees love realistically (and a little meanly if you ask me). Students will identify the different types of sonnets, the figurative language found within their lines, and will have the opportunity to write their own.

Students get to see another side of Shakespeare from his sonnet. Students always love his realistic, yet sarcastic portayal of love.

The mini bundle includes:
– a detailed lesson plan for the teacher
– student notes (the poems) and activity
– an annotated copy of the poems as well as a comprehensive answer key.

FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON – “The Holocaust: Who Was Responsible? (Grades 8, 9, 10)”

by Literary Sherri

8th – 12th Grade

The Holocaust Who Was Responsible

Who Was Responsible for the Holocaust?
Common Core Aligned

Description:
When discussing the Holocaust, some people ask, “Where was God?” Others ask, “Where was man?” Among other reasons, we study the Holocaust so that it won’t happen again. We grapple with the questions of what caused the Holocaust and who is responsible so that we can prevent such tragedies from recurring. We say evil triumphs when good men do nothing. This critical-thinking activity, meant to be completed at the end of a unit of study on the Holocaust, prompts students to determine whether or not the Holocaust happened because good men did nothing.

Students determine who was responsible for the Holocaust and to what extent they are guilty of crimes against humanity then create a circle graph (or pie chart) in which they assign the person(s) responsible the percentage of responsibility they should bear for the Holocaust. Although students do not have to use every category, all percentages must add up to 100%.

The insights, sensitivity, compassion, and empathy students bring to your post-activity discussion will amaze you and make you feel secure in the capabilities of the next generation!

I have used this activity with huge success with eighth graders following our unit on“The Diary of Anne Frank” and “Night” by Elie Wiesel. Reminders that their work will be posted and should reflect their personal pride and respect for the topic at hand have always resulted in a thoughtful, meaningful display.

This 7-page product includes:
-Activity Sheet

-Learning Objectives, Teaching Tips, Common Core State Standards, Terms of Use

Differentiation:
-Integration of art
-Integration of math
-Hands-on, kinesthetic activity

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Free Short Story Rubric Creative Writing Peer & Teacher Editing”

by Tracee Orman

4th – 12th Grade

Short Story Rubric Creative Writing

Creative writing rubrics
This two page document includes: one peer-editing rubric and one teacher grading rubric (the rubrics are the same, but labeled differently for each page).
Includes the following categories: creativity, plot, development of characters, organization, spelling, grammar, and a Liked It/Didn’t Like It section. There is an explanation for every single point.

I use this at the end of our short story unit when students compose their own. Students love to read their classmates’ stories, but are usually unsure on how to give valuable feedback on creative writing. This rubric helps.

Hamlet Unit (No prep - Complete Unit)

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

One entire month of planning done for you – I dare you to enjoy Shakespeare.

I love teaching Shakespeare’s plays and I want you to love it too. I’ve been teaching and improving this unit for over 10 years. I have literally done all the thinking for you.

This unit has everything a teacher needs to teach Hamlet. I’m aware that not everyone is comfortable with Shakespeare. Because of this, I have created this unit from my years of experience teaching the play so all of the thinking has been done for you. Just photocopy and teach. Seriously it’s that easy.
There’s no longer a need for hours of research and piecing together bits of information and activities found to teach the play.
This is a whole, complete unit, from scene summaries, important notes and annotations notes to help students understand what they are reading. I have also included an introduction to the play, a student guide, a teacher guide, quizzes, a creative assignment, and tests (all with answers and evaluation grids), and a comprehensive answer key. Everything has its place and teaches a specific skill.

The unit is appropriate for students in grades 10, 11 and 12.

The unit includes :

– An attractive, interactive, multimedia PowerPoint presentation introducing the play (17 slides)

-A Student Study Guide (with activities, act and scene questions…) and various activities (14 pages)

-A Teacher Guide (with detailed, comprehensive lessons, unit plan, and additional notes to guide students.) -9 pages and 16 complete lessons. The teacher Guide also includes links to the audiobook (the exact time to cue the audio) AND it includes a list of speaking roles if reading out loud in class)to help with time management and organisation.

-18 pages of comprehensive scene summaries and important notes for each scene (annotations for each scene) ***THIS IS A TEACHER FAVORITE!

-A creative “Guess Who?” game to help students understand the characters. (What’s fun about this game is that it can be played from the beginning of the play right to the end, and students’ answers will change depending on the act they are reading.) LOTS OF FUN!

-A comprehensive answer key for all questions and activities. (24 pages)

-Comprehension quiz on Acts 1 and 2 in Word format for easy modifications (with evaluation grid) and answer key.

-Mid-play evaluation – The Parody – creative writing and analysis (in Word format for easy modifications – with evaluation grid)

-Summary guide (highlighting the significant events from each scene with important analytical information) – Throughout my years of teaching this play, I have amounted excellent notes and annotations, listing the most significant actions throughout each scene. I have retyped these annotations to help you teach the play so your students will understand it (and so will you). (18 pages)

FREE MATH LESSON – “Diffy – Fun Subtraction Math Game! Use with Integers, Fractions, Money”

by Rachel Lynette

2nd – 12th Grade

Diffy - Fun Subtraction Math Game

Diffy is a fun and intriguing math game that requires subtraction, logic, and pattern recognition to win. It can be played with whole numbers, negative numbers, fractions, and money. This game is challenging for both kids and adults!

You can play Diffy using the document camera with the whole class, or have students complete their own Diffy games either in worksheet format or at a center with laminated wipe-off sheets.

This download includes:
-Teacher intro and game sample
-Color Diffy game with directions
-Black and white diffy game with directions

These cards will look best in color, but will also print out fine in grayscale. Simply print and cut along the guidelines. Laminate and use them again and again. Alternatively, you could print on cardstock. It works well to keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

The entire unit contains 6 pages and it will most likely take two periods to complete.
