March into Eggstravagant Math….

MMooreEducationalResources

Enjoy a great activity I’ve completed with First Graders & Middle Schoolers! Every year around spring break I’ve enjoyed executing this wonderful fun egg math activity with my students.  There’s minimal prep time and materials for this activity – you will only need plastic eggs, paper for math problems or task cards already printed with answer key, a shoe box, and of course, candy or treats for students.  The students only need paper and a pencil.  Every year all students became very, very involved with this lesson!  Read more on how I executed this Eggstravagant Math Activity with my students!

1.) Begin preparations.
I put together a sheet of math problems or task cards that are numbered.  I typically always utilized task cards for students to review what has been taught all year that I want students to review.  You may also utilize math problems related to the current curriculum you’ve been teaching.  Cut task cards or printed math problems apart into one problem per small sheet of paper.  Have an answer key printed with the numbered problems – you’ll need this the day of the activity.  This activity may also be completed with any subject being taught!

2.) Put together materials.
Place the individual math problems or task cards into a plastic Egg.  They may be folded if you need to.  Make sure you have enough eggs for students.  I typically have double the eggs than the amount of students I teach.  You will, at minimum, need the total number of eggs to be the total number of students you have in your class.  I always based the number of problems and eggs I had on the ‘fastest working’ students I had and the number of students I was teaching.  It’s better to have too many math problems and eggs than not enough.  I wanted them to work through the whole class time.  Fill all of your plastic eggs with……  Read More at www.MMooreEducationalResources.com

A great activity I hope you read about and enjoy with your learners…

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Denotation and Connotation Activity”

by AlwaysLearning

4th – 7th Grade

denotate connotate

Understanding mood and tone is integral to gaining deeper meaning from text. The CCSS requires a realignment of a reading program as well as additional skills and strategies to better comprehend text. Understanding text at a deeper level requires readers to comprehend the connotation of words that an author uses to create mood and tone. This mini-lesson and activity defines the two and provides a large group of words for small groups or partners to sort into Neutral, Positive, or Negative groups. This activity can be done on chart paper or easily adapted to Interwrite boards. Please leave your feedback and let me know how it helped you in your classroom. FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Drawing Inferences Printable Bookmarks and Worksheet”

by Jen Bengel

3rd – 6th Grade

drawing inferences sheet

Enjoy this free resource for drawing inferences!

Since we can’t see or hear students’ thoughts as they are reading, it is difficult to assess their understanding of specific reading strategies. The activities in this resource offer a structured approach in teaching students how to make inferences while they are reading. They also offer teachers a glimpse into the thought process of students as they are reading and can serve as assessment tools.

There are printable bookmarks for students to write their understanding of making inferences while they are reading. There are also full page worksheets that can be used. These resources work great during independent reading time or center work. They can also be used in guided reading strategy groups.

The Common Core State Standards for grade 3 and beyond that Apply:

• RI.3.6. Distinguish their own point of view from that of the author of a text.
• RL.3.6. Distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters.

Let’s Go Fly a Kite

By Deann Marin of Socrates Lantern

When I taught special needs kids, each month we would do something special for those who earned enough points. One of their favorite activities was to make and fly kites in March. child-flying-a-kite smallYears later, I was mainstreamed to 6th grade and the children also loved  this activity.  After they flew their kites, they wrote two papers, one explaining how to make a kite and the other about their experience.

I am going to show you how to make simple kites that your class will love doing.

Materials for a garbage bag kite:  plastic bags, two sticks, string, a ribbon and a nice windy day.

Step 1:  Take two sticks, wooden dowels, or garden stakes and put them into the shape of a cross., one horizontally and one vertically. Place the horizontal stick about a third of the way down and tie them together with a string.

Step 2: Wrap the string securely around the horizontal and vertical sticks so that they stay together.

Step 3:  Cut the bag to fit the kite frame. Secure tightly by tying the ends of the bag to the frame at the tip of each dowel or stick.

Step 4:  Tie string from one side of the horizontal stick to the other, make it loose so that it forms a triangle, see first picture in step #4. Tie a large ball of string to thebottom part of the vertical stick. Loop under the loose portion of the horizontal string and tie a knot then tie another knot where the horizontal and vertical strings meet. You’ll know you’ve done it right if you see a triangle shape. See 2nd image in step #4.

Step 5: Tie some colorful ribbons to the end of the kite to give it balance. If it seems flimsy , you can attach washers to the ribbons to add support.

Step 6: Voila, your kites are complete. All you need is a sunny and windy March day and some space for your kids to run with their kites. Have fun. By the way, you can have a contest to see which kite flies the highest or the best.

Another fun thing that I’ve done with the kids is to take them camping at the end of the school year, but that’s another story.

St. Patrick’s Day: LUCKY you! It’s Almost Spring Break!

I don’t know what it is about holidays and school, but students always tend to go a little coo-coo around any holiday. St. Patrick’s Day just so happens to be one of those holidays that also falls before Spring Break, so they are especially coo-coo.

So what do we do? We give them fun activities and count down the days! Everyone knows that trying to teach a new concept or review before Spring Break is nearly impossible. So, there’s nothing wrong with having a little fun a day or two before Spring Break (or on St. Patrick’s Day if your Spring Break comes a little later)!

A fun activity to try on the holiday is teaching them the art of the LIMERICK. We have all heard the naughty one about Nantucket, so let’s not share that one with them, shall we? Start off first with the structure:

A LIMERICK is a short and fun rhyming verse that is often humorous. It has a distinctive rhyming pattern, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes easier and easier to come up with your own!

Here is an example of a limerick:

“There was an Old Man of Peru

Who watched his wife making a stew.

But once, by mistake,

In a stove she did bake

That unfortunate Man of Peru.”*

(from A Book of Nonsense by Edward Lear)

If you notice in the limerick, there is a very clear rhythm and rhyme. It is five lines and has a rhyming scheme of: AABBA. The rhythm pattern is as follows:

da DUM da da DUM da da DUM (A)

da DUM da da DUM da da DUM (A)

da DUM da da DUM (B)

da da DUM da da DUM (B)

da DUM da da DUM da da DUM (A)

Next, give them a couple more examples:

St. Pattys Blog

Once they get the hang of it, have them try to create their own! If you would like the Create-a-Limerick packet, check it out at my TPT store!

Blog Limerick2

I also have an activity called “Wacky Words” in which students fill in parts of speech to create a silly story about hunting a leprechaun. This can be purchased separately or with the St. Patrick’s Day Activity Packet that includes these two activities AND a crossword puzzle and word search!

Happy St. Patty-ing! :)

journal prompts

Journal Prompts FREE
* * * *

Do you have students who say they don’t like to write or those who say they don’t know what to write about? Watch pencils fly across their papers when they’re given my 260 prompts that be used for daily journal writing or to encourage class discussions. Suggestions of how to use them are included. Great for morning meetings and centers! Take a look at the comments teachers have made about my prompts and you’ll understand why they’ve been downloaded thousands of times!

IMPORTANT If you’ve downloaded my prompts previously, this is a new packet of 270 prompts! New prompts have been added and more! There is also a new cover for the packet that has “270” on it even though 260 still appears. These prompts are being used by elementary, middle and secondary teachers (up to 10th grade). Secondary teachers have mentioned that they use them with certain groups of students who just don’t like to write and or who have difficulty writing even the first sentence of a response. Whatever the case, there are many various ways to use them and now with over 130,000 downloads I’m REALLY HAPPY!! 🙂 Why?
Because I know what it’s like to have journal prompts that students don’t relate to!
Enjoy!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Greek and Latin Roots: Greek Roots Visual Flash Cards-Part 1”

by Steve’s Classroom

5th – 10th Grade

greek roots flashcards

These printable flash cards work like traditional flash cards, except instead of using plain ol’ text, they use interesting and colorful photos and illustrations to teach your students the meaning of Greek roots. How does it work? You show an image to the class, and students associate that image with a Greek stem.

For example, you might show a photo of colorful crayons. Students look at the crayons and think, “Crayons, color…chrom!” They associate the colorful crayons with the Greek root chrom. A meaningful and lasting mental connection is made.

This download contains three sets of 30 or more flash cards. Each set covers 10 roots.

I’ve used these flash cards many times with middle school and high school English and Science classes. The students enjoy it and it works.

Great for Literacy Centers or pocket charts. Just print them on card stock and paste them back to back. Voila, you have big, colorful, visual flash cards. Optionally, you can keep the photo and the answer separate and have students match the root to the picture that fits the root.

This is part one of a two-part series. This part covers the following Greek roots.

1. anti – against, opposite
2. aristo – best
3. astro – star
4. auto – self
5. bi – two
6. bio – life
7. chrom – color
8. chron – time
9. cine/kine – motion
10. cosm – universe, world, order

Greek Roots Visual Flash Cards – Part 2 (CRACY – ZOO)

This mnemonic tool works just like flash cards, but it is far more effective and fun because it uses high-quality images and illustrations to help your students build meaningful and lasting mental connections. Perfect for visual learners but suited to all types.

There are three, research-proven components to memorization, and this tool covers all three:
Teach to multiple sensory modalities, i.e. visual learners.
Information is remembered best if it is interesting or useful.
New information is easier to remember if it can be linked to something already stored in the memory bank.

In these PowerPoints, you will find two or more images to represent each root. Having more than one image allows you to use the flash cards again and again, practicing the same roots over and over, without boring the kids with the same images they have already seen before. There are enough choices that you will never show the exact same set of images twice unless you want to. Another reason I provide more than one image per root is that some roots, like cosm or phys, have more than one meaning, so it is important to teach all the meanings. Also, having three or more images allows you to tailor the PowerPoint to your students’ experience and maturity.

I have used this tool many times in the past with great success. I created it when I was teaching summer school English. Classes were long and the students’ grade levels were varied. I needed something flexible and fun, easy enough for everyone to understand, and worthwhile. I wanted to teach the students something measurable, so I could be sure they had learned something useful in their five weeks of Summer School. Students enjoyed it and it worked.

It’s flexible enough to be used for entire periods or small pockets of time. It requires few materials. Forget about spending hours in the copy room duplicating packets or handouts. All the kids need are some roots and meanings written on the board, some notebook paper, and something to write with. It can be used again and again.

There are many things I love about using this mnemonic tool in the classroom.
Cross-curricular: Greek roots are found in every subject, from Science to Math to English to Art to Phys Ed.
Very little prep time required – just decide what Greek roots you want to cover, mix up the slides, and away you go.
Little to no materials required.
Flexible – use it for an entire period or just a few minutes.

All of the images in these mnemonic flash cards were used in accordance with the terms of use set by their creators. No images were used without permission.
This product is in Microsoft Office PowerPoint Version 97-2003.

FREE MISC. Lesson – “Leap Day Birthday Certificates”

If you teach for 30 years 7 to 8 of those years will be “Leap Years”.  If you teach for 30 years in a self-contained classroom with 20 students per year, you’ll have taught a total of 600 children!  Odds are that you’ll have at least one child during your teaching career that will be born on February 29th.

I’ve made a birthday certificate for that eventuality.  There are color and black ink versions.  Some of the certificates can be used this year (2016) which is a leap year.  I’ve also made some that can be used when it’s not a leap year.  Click on the second image to download it from my Teachers Pay Teachers shop.

Here’s some leap year trivia:  Do you think leap year is every 4 years?  Well, almost.  While it’s true that a leap year must be divisible by 4, it’s not the only requirement.  According to a Gregorian calendar, the beginning of a new century must also be divisible by 400 in order to qualify as a leap year.  The year 2000 was a leap year because it’s divisible by 400.  The next century will begin in 2100 and it won’t be a leap year!

FREE MATH LESSON – “Fit: A Multiplication Strategy Game Using Arrays (Grades 2-5)”

by Beyond Traditional Math

2nd – 5th Grade

fit game

As soon as I introduced this game, fit mania has ensued in my classroom! The students LOVE to play this array game because it makes learning multiplication super fun.

In this game the student multiplies the array of each piece they lay down. (Example: a 2 x 4 piece is written on the recording sheet as 2 x 4 = 8.) They can only lay down a piece by connecting corners, which makes it challenging to fit as many pieces as they can. In the end there is a good amount of addition of multiple numbers that is required to determine the winner.

There is a challenge mode included where the students multiply the two blocks together (and in some cases three blocks where the corners touch). This is more appropriate for the practice of facts, as well as for multiplying two or more numbers together.

This resource includes:

1. Introduction, and game set up tips
2. Recording sheet
3. Regulation mode instructions
4. Challenge mode instructions

(In order to have a fit tournament during recess, I had students bring in their own 16 x 16 base platforms to get multiple games going. It was great fun!)

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Greek & Latin Word Wall for Reading Math Science SS Gifted CCSS”

by Simone Ryals

3rd – 12th Grade

greek-latin word wall

This has helped tremendously in helping my students understand the etymology of words, which is emphasized in the CCSS for ELA.

This is a compilation of over 80 Greek and Latin word parts, complete with definitions, that I use in my classroom. Greek origins are shown in green and Latin in purple in a large and clear font for easy viewing.

To make it interactive, students are presented with the full set of words and word parts, and as they are encountered in reading, math, science, or social studies, the students add them to the wall.

The effects are tremendous. “Iron” being abbreviated as Fe makes sense. If “tele” means far and “phone” means sound, then telephones transmit sounds from far away. Suddenly, they start making connections to television, microphone, microscope… They “get” it!

This can be adapted to most intermediate and higher grade levels; and of course, laminating is optional but will keep them in good condition for years. Another suggestion is to use them in small groups or individually as a game wherein they make lists of words containing these parts, with points awarded to the most unique (not listed by others) words. Fits in perfectly with word study.

The Proof is in the Pudding-Proof-reading That Is!

By Deann Marin of  Socrates Lantern

As a veteran English and Social Studies teacher, I’d like to share some effective proof-reading tips that I’ve used to help students improve their writing skills, and to make my life a bit easier.

This is simple but a tough one for the kids to remember. When writing a rough draft they should skip a line between sentences. This will leave room for proof-reading comments. We are programmed to finish writing one line and just going to the next, so students will really need to remember this.  I’ve often told them to use a marker or pen and put a dot at the beginning of each line that they should write on. This helps a great deal. Eventually they will get it and it will become second nature.  Also, letting them know that as  part of their final grade, they get credit for skipping lines on their rough draft.

Always write rough drafts with a pencil if not using a computer. At the top of their paper, the student should write each area that will be proof-read.  This depends on what you are teaching at the time. After proof-reading has been finished, each student must initial the part that they corrected.

Proof-reading is a group effort.  So I have the class get into their collaborative groups of 4.  I will direct them and let them know exactly what to do.  Each child will have a specific thing to look for, depending on the lesson. If you’re using sensory words, descriptive adjectives, topic and detail sentences, capitals and end punctuation,  figurative language etc. they will proofread accordingly. It is really up to the individual teacher.  All corrections should be written in pen or different colored pencils. Here are some examples:

  1. One child will make sure that the paper makes sense. They will read it and add corrections on the blank lines.
  2. Another child  will look for colorful words such as adjectives, sensory words.
  3. Someone else will circle spelling errors with red.
  4. The fourth child will fix punctuation and grammar.  They might underline grammar mistakes, or circle them with a blue pencil.

Each child in the group starts with someone else’s paper. I give them a certain amount of time to read and correct it, 10-15 minutes or so. After 15 minutes have passed, they give the paper to the next person in their group, and they do their specific job. This continues until all the corrections have been completed. They must remember to initial the part that they corrected see tip #2.

Once the proof-reading has been finished, I let the class know that they will be reading each other’s paper to them to hear how it sounds.  It’s easier to pick up mistakes when you hear it out loud, rather than reading it to yourself. This can get noisy, so they should use inside voices.

  1. When child A reads child B’s paper, child  B has to listen, and vica versa. You do this for all papers in each group. If errors are picked up, they can be worked on, corrected and read aloud again.

As an extra incentive, tell your kids  that if a paper that they corrected has no mistakes, they will get extra points towards the final grade on their own paper. This will get the class to take this exercise seriously.

  1. John, Sarah, Sally and Andrew are in group A. John fixed spelling errors on the papers in his group.  No one has spelling mistakes, so  I  would give him 4 extra points, 1 point for each paper that has been proof- read.  Do this for everyone in the group. Use your own discretion.

When the final drafts are collected, they should include pre-writing, and rough drafts with comments and corrections. I let the them know that if they’ve followed directions and handed everything in as  instructed, they will get credit for it.

I hope this post has been helpful for you. Would love to hear feedback.

Thanks for stopping by.

Deann
