FREE Mathematical Discourse Resource

Looking for a strategy to encourage mathematical discourse in your classroom?

The “Who’s Correct?” strategy allows students the opportunity to evaluate the mathematical thinking of others and either agree or disagree with the person’s response. What I love about this strategy is that students do not just solve the problem, they must select a correct, or incorrect, response and provide a justification for the thinking of another. See the example above.

Here’s how to use this strategy:
1. Create two responses to a problem (consider using a frequently missed test item).

2. Ask students to respond to the “Who’s Correct?” question and give a justification in pictures, words, or numbers.

3. Have students debate who’s response is correct (or incorrect) using appropriate models and mathematical vocabulary.

Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of my “Who’s Correct?” images. To use them, insert them into PowerPoint slides and then add your own text. You can read more about how to use the “Who’s Correct?” strategy with your students here.

Poetry Unit (for senior students)

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Poetry-Unit-for-senior-students-1107375

Poetry Unit (for senior students)

Product Description

Poetry Unit for Senior Students (Bundled)

I love poetry! I love reading it, I love teaching it, and I love the discussions I can have with my students because of it. May students (and some teachers) dislike poetry because they think it’s too difficult. I once had a student tell me that poetry was like a “code” that needed to be unlocked. Cringe!! Some poems are meant to be analyzed. Some poems and meant to sound beautiful, and some poems are meant to be simple and enjoyed for what they are. This unit has a little of all of those things.

Students love this poetry unit. It is a complete unit with no prep required on the teacher’s part. This 2 and a half week unit includes a student guide, 12 detailed lesson plans, two multimedia presentations (no internet connection required), a complete answer key with annotated poems (this is a teacher favorite!) , and an end of the unit evaluation with answer key.

Just print it and teach it. It really is that easy.

This bundle includes individual lessons devised to teach students the importance of:

• Figurative language (its uses and effects)
• How to read poetry
• How to understand and apply symbolism and imagery
• The importance of rhythm
• The importance of tone and attitude in a poem
• Types of poetry
• How to analyze poetry
• How to appreciate poetry (even when you don’t understand it)
• Includes some Canadian poetry

This unit’s focus is the analysis of poetry and teaches students how to make inferences, which is a skill they must learn for their other subjects as well.

Poems include authors such as Emily Dickenson, Dorothy Parker, Maya Angelou, Thomas Gray, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Alfred Noyes, T.S. Eliot, Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Frost, Pearl Jam, Langston Hughes, Margaret Atwood, and Walt Whitman. The Unit includes 21 different poems.

The unit has been conceived to last 15 days – with 65 minute periods (although they are easy to modify).

The unit includes:

1 – The teacher guide (Contains 12 comprehensive lesson plans to teach the poems included in the unit. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO TEACH THIS UNIT HAS BEEN DONE FOR YOU. )

2 – The student package (Contains students’ notes, poems, and questions) (28 pages)

3 – The answer key includes annotated poems and answers to all student activities, as well as an example of paragraph developing a theme in poetry (saving you time).

4 – Included is a test with multiple choice questions as well as one development question. All answers are included. (Word format for easy changes)

5 – 2 PowerPoint presentations – one multimedia presentation to introduce the unit (17 slides) and the second to reinforce the use of imagery and symbolism (19 slides) – NO INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED

A total of 68 pages + 36 slides are included in this package.

This unit is complete and does all of the thinking for you. All you need to do is to print out and photocopy the student package, and you’re set.

Poetry Lesson on Sonnets (Shakespeare and Browning)

Poetry Lesson on Sonnets (Shakespeare and Browning)

Product Description

Lesson on Sonnets

This mini bundle includes a sonnet from William Shakespeare (#130) and a sonnet from Elizabeth Browning (How do I Love Thee?). In this activity, students will compare the different tones and forms from both poems. One is beautiful and romanticizes love, and the other sees love realistically (and a little meanly if you ask me). Students will identify the different types of sonnets, the figurative language found within their lines and will have the opportunity to write their own.

Students get to see another side of Shakespeare from his sonnet. Students always love his realistic, yet sarcastic portrayal of love.

The mini bundle includes:
– a detailed lesson plan for the teacher
– student notes (the poems) and activity
– an annotated copy of the poems as well as a comprehensive answer key.

The entire unit contains four pages.

This lesson is part of a larger poetry bundle:

FREE Math Vocabulary Activity

Looking for a critical thinking activity to help your students with math vocabulary?

The “Vocabulary Dominoes” activity requires students to compare and contrast terms, as well as, look for, analyze, justify, and communicate about relationships among the terms.

Here’s how it works:
1. Group students in groups of three. Assign students to be Student 1, 2, or 3. Note: This activity works best with at least 16 dominoes for a group of three.
2. Students spread out the face-down cards.
3. Each student takes 4 dominoes. Place the remaining cards in a face-down stack.
4. Student 1 turns over one of the remaining cards to use as the starter domino.
5. In turn, each student tries to connect one of the words on his/her domino to an end and justify the connection. If no connection is made, the student takes a card from the extra pile and tries to make a connection. If no connection can be made, the turn is lost.
6. The first student to place all of his/her dominoes is the winner.

Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of my “Vocabulary Dominoes” template. To use the download: Insert the image into a Word document or PowerPoint slide. Just add a text box with each word you want to add and place it in the center of each half of the domino.

FREE MATH LESSON – “FREE: Finding the GCF & LCM Using a Venn Diagram for Fractions and Algebra”

by Scipi – Science and Math

5th – 9th Grade

This 8 page free resource begins with the definitions for the math words factor, greatest common factor and least common multiple, and continues by explaining and illustrating what a factor tree is and how to construct and use a Venn Diagram as a graphic organizer to find the least common multiple.

Also incorporated into this free resource is how to use the two circle graphic organizer to factor out the Greatest Common Factor for polynomials or algebraic terms. A detailed example is provided to show how this same process can be used in algebra.

One of the practice pages is entitled “What’s Missing?” and requires the student to read a Venn Diagram to find the two missing numbers, their factors, the LCM and the GCF. A half page of three blank two circle Venn Diagrams is included.

What if there are three numbers? A three circle Venn Diagram would be used. This is fully shown in detail followed by a student practice page. A half page of blank, three circle Venn Diagrams is added to the resource so that the students can practice.

This resource is an effective and valuable tool when teaching fractions. It is also applicable and helpful in algebra when students are asked to find the LCM or GCF of a set of algebraic terms such as: 25xy, 40xyz. (LCM = 200xyz; GCF = 5xy) or when they must factor out the GCF from a polynomial such as 6x2y3 + 9xy2. An answer key is included.

Hamlet Unit No prep

Product Description

NEW: You can now download this unit in Word format to customize and save it. All documents are available in PDF and Word formats.

One entire month of planning done for you – I dare you to enjoy Shakespeare.

I love teaching Shakespeare’s plays, and I want you to love it too. I’ve been teaching and improving this unit for over ten years. I have done all the thinking for you.

This unit has everything a teacher needs to teach Hamlet. I’m aware that not everyone is comfortable with Shakespeare. Because of this, I have created this unit from my years of experience teaching the play, so all of the thinking has been done for you. Just photocopy and teach. Seriously it’s that easy.

There’s no longer a need for hours of research and piecing together bits of information and activities found to teach the play.

This is a whole, complete unit, from scene summaries, important notes and annotations notes to help students understand what they are reading. I have also included an introduction to the play, a student guide, a teacher guide, quizzes, a creative assignment, and tests (all with answers and evaluation grids), and a comprehensive answer key. Everything has its place and teaches a specific skill.

The unit is appropriate for students in grades 10, 11 and 12.

The unit includes :

– An attractive, interactive, multimedia PowerPoint presentation introducing the play (17 slides)

-A Student Study Guide (with activities, Act, and scene questions…) and various activities (14 pages)

-A Teacher Guide (with detailed, comprehensive lessons, unit plan, and additional notes to guide students.) -9 pages and 16 complete lessons. The teacher Guide also includes links to the audiobook (the exact time to cue the audio), AND it includes a list of speaking roles if reading out loud in class)to help with time management and organization.

-18 pages of comprehensive scene summaries and important notes for each scene (annotations for each scene)***THIS IS A TEACHER FAVORITE!

A creative Hamlet Guess Who? Game to help students understand the characters. (What’s fun about this game is that it can be played from the beginning of the play right to the end, and students’ answers will change depending on the act they are reading.) LOTS OF FUN!

-A comprehensive answer key for all questions and activities. (24 pages)

-Comprehension quiz on Acts 1 and 2 in Word format for easy modifications (with evaluation grid) and answer key.

-Mid-play evaluation – The Parody – creative writing and analysis (in Word format for easy modifications – with evaluation grid)

-Summary guide (highlighting the significant events from each scene with important analytical information) – Throughout my years of teaching this play, I have amounted excellent notes and annotations, listing the most significant actions throughout each scene. I have retyped these annotations to help you teach the play, so your students will understand it (and so will you). (18 pages)

-The culminating evaluation includes three different versions of the final unit test with evaluation grid and answer key (in Word for easy modifications)

Includes a total of 109 pages.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Letter Discrimination Center Freebie! Great for tricky b, d, p, & q”

by Karen Pritchett

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Free supplemental pages to help with frequently reversed letters with a little math vocabulary and graphing tucked in as well. Easy to prepare – just print and go. No cutting, laminating, or color ink!

This free set includes 2 supplemental pages plus a graphing page. It can be used alone or with my big letter discrimination set in my shop. You can use these as a center or as a coloring worksheet for commonly reversed letters. I like to put mine in a page protector to use with bingo chips to save on copies.

I tucked in a little math vocabulary & counting into this literacy product. Each page has a place to write which letter they find the most and the least. I also included an optional graphing page for your students to color based on how many letters they find on each page.

I encourage my students to methodically search for one letter at a time by going left to right, just like reading a book.

If you like these sample pages, please check out the big set in my store. It contains over 20 themed sheets for each month of the school year (Aug-June) and sheets for each season along with some cut & paste sorting pages. Just print the pages, and you have a center that lasts all year! Click here to see it!
