We all know that the thesis statement is the most important part of the essay. This is also the part of the essay with which students have the most difficulty.

When you are able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a work, you are able to write better yourself.

Topic: Is knowledge good or destructive? The subject is interesting, and can be used along with many different types of literature, or on its own.

In this bundle, I’ve included an interactive PowerPoint presentation that includes the following:

-The definition of a thesis statement
-How to write a thesis statement (and the steps to take leading up to the thesis)
-5 examples of thesis statements, where students must identify both the weaknesses and the strengths
-10 slides explaining the strengths in the examples and the weaknesses in the examples
-1 example of a well-written thesis statement, and an explanation about why it’s good.

To accompany the PowerPoint presentation, I’ve included a student activity sheet with a list of all of the examples written in the PPT. (PDF format)

Also included is a lesson plan with details regarding the PowerPoint and activity sheet.

As a bonus, I’ve also included 2 posters listing the 7 essential steps to writing a great thesis. I’ve included an image format and a PDF format for easy printing.

-the first poster measures 70 cm (27.6 inches)
-the second poster, which students can actually read from far away, measures 97 cm (38.2 inches)

Hamlet Unit (No prep - Complete Unit)

Product Description

One entire month of planning done for you – I dare you to enjoy Shakespeare.

I love teaching Shakespeare’s plays, and I want you to love it too. I’ve been teaching and improving this unit for over ten years. I have done all the thinking for you.

This unit has everything a teacher needs to teach Hamlet. I’m aware that not everyone is comfortable with Shakespeare. Because of this, I have created this unit from my years of experience teaching the play, so all of the thinking has been done for you. Just photocopy and teach. Seriously it’s that easy.
There’s no longer a need for hours of research and piecing together bits of information and activities found to teach the play.
This is a whole, complete unit, from scene summaries, important notes and annotations notes to help students understand what they are reading. I have also included an introduction to the play, a student guide, a teacher guide, quizzes, a creative assignment, and tests (all with answers and evaluation grids), and a comprehensive answer key. Everything has its place and teaches a specific skill.

The unit is appropriate for students in grades 10, 11 and 12.

The unit includes :

– An attractive, interactive, multimedia PowerPoint presentation introducing the play (17 slides)

-A Student Study Guide (with activities, Act and scene questions…) and various activities (14 pages)

-A Teacher Guide (with detailed, comprehensive lessons, unit plan, and additional notes to guide students.) -9 pages and 16 complete lessons. The teacher Guide also includes links to the audiobook (the exact time to cue the audio), AND it includes a list of speaking roles if reading out loud in class)to help with time management and organization.

-18 pages of comprehensive scene summaries and important notes for each scene (annotations for each scene)***THIS IS A TEACHER FAVORITE!

A creative Hamlet Guess Who? Game to help students understand the characters. (What’s fun about this game is that it can be played from the beginning of the play right to the end, and students’ answers will change depending on the act they are reading.) LOTS OF FUN!

-A comprehensive answer key for all questions and activities. (24 pages)

-Comprehension quiz on Acts 1 and 2 in Word format for easy modifications (with evaluation grid) and answer key.

-Mid-play evaluation – The Parody – creative writing and analysis (in Word format for easy modifications – with evaluation grid)

-Summary guide (highlighting the significant events from each scene with important analytical information) – Throughout my years of teaching this play, I have amounted excellent notes and annotations, listing the most significant actions throughout each scene. I have retyped these annotations to help you teach the play, so your students will understand it (and so will you). (18 pages)

Poetry Lesson on Sonnets (Shakespeare and Browning)

Product Description

Lesson on Sonnets

This mini bundle includes a sonnet from William Shakespeare (#130) and a sonnet from Elizabeth Browning (How do I Love Thee?). In this activity, students will compare the different tones and forms from both poems. One is beautiful and romanticizes love, and the other sees love realistically (and a little meanly if you ask me). Students will identify the different types of sonnets, the figurative language found within their lines, and will have the opportunity to write their own.

Students get to see another side of Shakespeare from his sonnet. Students always love his realistic, yet sarcastic portayal of love.

The mini bundle includes:
– a detailed lesson plan for the teacher
– student notes (the poems) and activity
– an annotated copy of the poems as well as a comprehensive answer key.

The entire unit contains 4 pages.

This lesson is part of a larger poetry bundle:

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “6th Grade Common Core Practice – RL.6.1, 3 mini-lessons”

by Mad Eye Moody Productions

6th Grade

Finally! Specific, targeted practice for Common Core or LAFS Reading: Literature 6th grade standard RL.6.1 with this NO PREP resource! These questions are specifically for this standard. These three mini-lessons use the research-based “model, guide, assess” (I do, we do, you do) instructional model. If you are tired of sifting through resources that have questions for multiple standards, only to find the one you’re looking for practice on isn’t included, this is the resource line for you. Each CIM has questions that only target the specific standard, so you know exactly what you’re getting!

This is a “CIM” (a Continuous Improvement Model) resource. It is designed to instruct and assess students’ mastery of CCSS.RL.6.1

→Important note: Because of how the state of Florida altered their standards (to become the LAFS), this tool IS appropriate for the LAFS as well. It aligns with LAFS.6.RL.1.1.

Want more CIMs and want to save some $$? You can purchase ALL my 6th grade RL and RI CIMs in my 6th grade CIM lessons super bundle:
6th Grade ALL Common Core Reading Standards Super Bundle

In this freebie CIM for RL.6.1, there are 3 lessons designed to take less than 10 minutes each. They can be done together on a single day or on 3-4 separate days.

Lesson 1: Teacher models how to find/cite strong evidence to support an inference based on a passage.

Lesson 2: Teacher walks students through finding/citing strong evidence to support an inference based on a passage.

Lesson 3: Students find/cite strong evidence to support an inference based on a passage – independently.

All three mini-lessons use excerpts from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, which is a 6th-grade appropriate text.

I know this seems like a large product to be a “freebie,” but there are only 10 pages of content on the teacher’s version. The rest of the pages are just student versions that can be printed and distributed.

This file is a .zip containing 3 separate files: the teacher version (with script), student version without answer choices (open-response), and student version with answer choices (multiple choice). Student versions may be printed, copied, and distributed as necessary for the purchasing teacher’s classroom.

The resource is in .pdf format.

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Using Bloom’s in Math”

by Scipi – Science and Math

7th – 12th Grade

As one of their assignments, my college students are required to create a practice test using pre-selected math vocabulary. This activity prompts them to review, look up definitions and apply the information to create ten good questions. Since I want the questions to be more than Level 1 (Remembering) or Level II (Understanding) of Bloom’s Taxonomy, I give them the following handout to help them visualize the different levels. My students find it to be simple, understandable, uncomplicated and straightforward.

This free resource consists of six activities which follow the revised six levels of Bloom’s. (uses verbs instead of nouns). In this freebie, each learning tier uses plane geometry shapes to clarify and explain the level.

Level 1 – Remembering
Level II – Understanding
Level III – Applying
Level IV – Analyzing
Level V – Evaluating
Level VI – Creating

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Speech Therapy Artic Sight Words /Z/ final position (Homework/ Games/Flashcards)”

by Karen Pritchett

Pre-Kindergarten – 4th Grade

Freebie for now! /z/ sight words for speech therapy. A great way to combine articulation drills with academics. (Great for observations!)

/Z/ Final position sight words packet includes:
12 Final /z/ Sight Word Flashcards
1 Final /z/ Game Board (color)
1 Final /z/ Game Board (black & white)
1 Final /z/ Data Sheet for Homework

This set is similar to my other phoneme sets, but it is a smaller packet. There are not really many sight words that contain the phoneme /z/ in the initial or medial position. This set is available in my sight word bundle in my store.
Save with R, L, S, & Z bundle!

In an effort to combine functional/academic activities with traditional
articulation therapy, I decided to start using sight words. I searched through Dolch and Fry sight word lists to find the words I thought were the most important. I tried to avoid words that had too many syllables or blends that might be tricky for children who struggle with articulation.
