FREE MATH LESSON – “FREE Math Counting How Many More To Make Ten? Pilgrim Color Version”

by Learning Harbor Resources for Teachers

Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

This task card activity provides counting and fine motor skill practice at the same time. A student looks at the number of objects that the character is holding, then he counts on to see how many more are needed to make ten. The student can mark his answers by clipping a clothes pin onto the answer, by covering the answer with a mini eraser, button, or any small game markers that you have in your classroom. I suggest laminating the cards for durability. If the cards are laminated, the students can circle the correct answer with a wipe off marker or crayon. To make the cards self-correcting put a small sticker or draw a star over the correct answer on the back of the card.

The way I use this resource…
In writing, I scaffold and model information to my students. Each class is different and each year is different; therefore, I can’t do everything the same each time I teach the same subject. I start with the basic rubric and introduce 1-3 new concepts each essay. Once I introduce a concept, I hold students accountable for the concepts I taught. If it appears that the majority of the class does not understand the concept, I do not hold them accountable and I reteach the concept. I try not to stifle their creativity by focusing on spelling, capitalization, and punctuation during the first two terms of school depending on the class. I also can easily use the 6 traits of writing with the rubrics. Make sure you choose a topic that is relevant, relatable, and the reasons are researchable.
Next, I introduce the peer editing checklist. I have students pair up and exchange papers. I have clipboards students can use while they sit around the room for this activity. It’s important for you to model for the students how to peer edit. Many times students just want to be nice and not give feedback. However, this is a great opportunity for students to read each others essays and learn from each other. I try not to let the same students peer edit with each other every time in order for students to view a variety of styles over the school year.
Finally, you are able to print front and back! Then you can cut them in half to save on paper. For example, pages 12 and 13 are the same rubric. Simply print it from your computer or printer as two-sided. If this does not work for you, print the first rubric for a full page rubric.
Happy Teaching!
Sally

Social Skills All Year

by Kathy Babineau

Grades KG – 5th

This kit contains 240 cards covering seasonal scenarios and topics. For each month of the year (including summer months), there are 4 Topic Talker cards, 4 Role Playing cards, 4 Facial Expression/Body Language cards, 4 Problem Solver cards, and 4 Perspective Taker cards, for a total of 20 cards for each month of the year. Cards are simply marked with the month of the year, but they can also be mixed and matched throughout the year if you would rather not focus on themes.

The Topic Talker Cards offer suggested topics of conversation, many of which are related to timely topics and holidays. Some other generic school based topics have been included in order to be sensitive to students who may not observe particular holidays. These topic talker cards are helpful for students who are trying to work to maintain on-topic exchanges with peers, addressing attention to conversation and even general expressive and receptive language.

The Role Playing cards also address many timely topics. When using the Role Playing cards, I like to have multiple teams role play the same scenes, because there may be several correct ways to “act out” the situation. It is also fun sometimes to role play the situation in an inappropriate way and then discuss why it may be hurtful or inappropriate or offensive. Be sure to brainstorm and discuss how body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice and word choice are all important to communication.

The Facial Expression/Body Language cards are fun to use to think about and practice ways that we communicate with our faces and our bodies.

The Problem Solver cards offer students opportunities to think about social situations, analyze the problem and generate practical solutions. There is not always just one correct answer to these problems.

The Perspective Taker cards encourage students to put themselves in a situation or in someone else’s shoes and decide how they might feel.

To use this kit, simply print out all sheets and then cut apart and laminate (optional) the cards, and you are good to go! They are all in black and white (except the cover page) to go easy on the color copying budget.

I hope you like this and find it helpful when working with your students!

Thanks!

Please also note – this is a Notebook file for use with Smartboards. TEACH KIDS TO BE THANKFUL THIS HOLIDAY WITH STONE SOUP

By Mary Carr of Carberry Creations

We know that social skills are important, and that many of our students could benefit from a bit of direct instruction in the matter, but alas, testing strategies prevail, and social skills fall to the back burner. Perhaps not today. I would like to share with you my favorite read aloud story for this time of year which will allow you to target the test taking strategies, and with only a little extra time from your day, you can integrate a bit of social skills curriculum in too (but shhh… don’t tell the politicians, or school administrators.)

So Much to Be Thankful For

By Deann Marin of Socrates Lantern

As a teacher, I feel it’s part of my responsibility to help my students think about the good things that they have going, and to be thankful for their blessings.

*********************************

So Much to Be Thankful For

So Much to Be Thankful For!I can remember my grandmother sitting in her big rocking chair that was placed in her favorite spot, next to a picture window where she kept all of her plants. I would sit on her lap and she would sing about the beautiful autumn leaves dancing to the ground in their colorful dresses. I can’t remember the tune or the words, but that wonderful memory has always been vivid in my mind. as if it were yesterday. I’m so thankful for this experience.

I can remember standing on the front porch waiting for my mom to take me shopping downtown. I loved to shop with her. We used to go to a store called Eli Moore, they had everything that a little girl could want. First stop was the shoe department, and I’d get my black patent leather shoes, next we’d go to the clothes department. I was so spoiled back then, as an only child, I was showered with beautiful things to wear and great toys. Shopping done, we’d go to this café for lunch and a yummy desert. My mom passed on when I was 15 so these moments mean so much for me and I’m thankful for the short time that I was able to spend with her.

I have so many things to be thankful for, a wonderful husband, my Siberian Husky, friends and family who love me. We’re healthy, other than some aches and pains. Our house is in the woods and it is our own little paradise. I can’t think of anything else that I need, other than a few million dollars, lol!

As a teacher, I feel it’s part of my responsibility to help my students think about the good things that they have going, and to be thankful for their blessings. To introduce them to this activity, I tell them the story about my grandmother, and or my mom.  Then I will pass out task cards with Thanksgiving images on them and ask the kids to write down what they’re thankful for and we put them into a decorated Thanksgiving box. They can write as many things as they wish, The Wednesday before Thanksgiving recess. I pass the box around the room and each child, as well as myself, chooses a card and we read what is on it, then try to guess whose card it is and give it to its owner.

I usually end up moved to tears  and so do some of the kids, as this activity is so meaningful to all of us..

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Thanksgiving Grocery Store Trip {CBI}”

by Mrs Ds Corner

1st – 3rd Grade

thanksgiving grocery trip

This activity was created to accompany my students on our Thanksgiving Curriculum Based Instruction (CBI) trip.

Here is how I used it:
– First, print the pages on card stock and laminate. Cut them out and Velcro the backs of the small aisle pieces. This makes it easy for students to graph the data in the grocery store, rather than writing it down.
– When you are in the grocery store, each student will get 1-4 pieces of the larger pictures of food to locate inside the grocery store. I laminate these and use a key ring to hold them together.
– As students are locating the items in the grocery store, have them take note of what aisle or where they found the items. I, also, have students write the prices of the items, or at least say the price and I will keep track of the record of prices.
– When the CBI is finished and we are back at school (same day or next day), we sequence the day. Then we take a look at where we found each item. We make a graph to see if we found any of the items in the same aisle or department of the store.
– We then look at the prices of each food. I have students make a hypothesis of what they think our Thanksgiving meal would cost to purchase. We use our estimating/rounding skills to get a general idea of how much money it would be. We, then, use calculators (I teach Life Skills) to add up the cost.

Don’t forget to *Follow Me* for new products and stop by Mrs. D’s Blog.

Thanks for Looking and Happy Teaching!
