The way I use it…
Students enjoy this project! This is a 2-3 month project. Each class is different and each year is different; therefore, I can’t do everything the same each time I teach the same subject. I give each student a three pronged folder with the packet inside. As I scaffold and model the information to my students, I have students write in the due dates. I make this an at-school project and have students keep their research folder in a designated location. Also, you can choose themes for your project such as children’s authors, presidents, Native Americans, American Revolution historical figures, American heroes, African Americans, famous people/Americans, scientists/inventors, composers, or historical figures from your state. The choice is yours!

I love teaching Shakespeare’s plays, and I want you to love it too. I’ve been teaching and improving this unit for over ten years. I have done all the thinking for you.

This unit has everything a teacher needs to teach Hamlet. I’m aware that not everyone is comfortable with Shakespeare. Because of this, I have created this unit from my years of experience teaching the play, so all of the thinking has been done for you. Just photocopy and teach. Seriously it’s that easy.
There’s no longer a need for hours of research and piecing together bits of information and activities found to teach the play.
This is a whole, complete unit, from scene summaries, important notes and annotations notes to help students understand what they are reading. Everything has its place and teaches a specific skill.

This “Cheat Sheet” was designed to help students while writing in English. This at a glance 2 page sheet is colorful and has an easy to find layout to help students remember certain important things while they write.

I allow my students to use this in class when writing a test. This is not a grammar lesson, but it will remind students about the grammar they’ve learned in the past.

Some of the reminders included:

– parts of speech
– transitional words
– quotation marks (how and when to use them)
– basic sentence structure
– spelling tips (plurals of nouns and IE rule)
– puncutaion rules (apostrophe, colon, semicolon

The other side of the page has comma rules:
– with coordinate conjunctions
-with introductory elements
– with other elements (dates, parenthetical expression, nouns in a direct address)
– with adjectives
-with appositives

It also contains tips on things to avoid, such as writing a paragraph shorter than 4 sentences. And, it contains a list of things to do, such as make sure that your paragraphs contain at least 2 pieces of evidence.

I created this comment bank because I had the same problem. After a little while, you don’t know what to write on a student’s test.

The Comment Bank has been constructed to save the Language Arts teacher time when offering constructive and helpful comments on students’ evaluations. Marking papers in any Language Arts class is always a lengthy process. Increasingly, teachers are being asked to write more detailed comments to highlight students’ strengths and weaknesses, and sometimes we run out of ideas. Being the vigilant teachers we are, and wanting to help our students achieve their potential is and will always be one of our priorities. To this end, when marking students’ papers, writing down everything we want to say to them about their papers would be a very lengthy process. I have decided to share my personal comment bank with you.

The bank comments on the following areas:

The package contains 7 pages of comments, which are divided by levels of accomplishment A, B, C and D. (levels 100 to 50)

Included in this package are over 120 comments for students. You can get inspiration from these pages to hand write your comments, or you can do what I do and copy/paste your comments into a word document, print, and staple the comment to the students’ evaluations. This product will help your students learn close reading habits with the help of a free article from ReadWorks.org. The questions included will help you conduct a close reading for this informational text.

It covers all of the Reading Informational Text Standards for the Common Core Third Grade Standards. It is a mixture of multiple choice, short answer, and extended answer questions. The questions are provided, which takes the guesswork out of close reading and allows you to integrate close reading into your daily schedule.

In order to do the reading, just print the article and questions for each student or group and start annotating this informational text. This would work especially well in an interactive notebook, so students can reference it in the future while doing close reading. This will also work as a class read, projected and read together, if printing is limited or not desired, with questions printed or discussed as a class.

The close read questions included correlate to ReadWorks.org’s “Eruption” Part 2. This passage is all about how a volcano works. It is written at grade 3, lexile 820 level. This makes it an advanced individual read or a class/small group read. It can be found at: Eruption.

For this close read, I only used the third page of the text. If you are interested in the other part (pages 1 and 2), please see Close Read “Eruption”, Part 1.

This is all aligned to the Third Grade Common Core Standards, with a focus on asking questions that are aligned to the level of complexity the standards require. Many times, close readings will focus on the standards, but not at the right level of complexity, meaning students are answering questions below the level they need to. This practice doesn’t actually help them develop the skills they need. These questions will help you to focus on asking the right questions, so the practice will match the end of the year assessment, as well as helping your students develop the needed skills to do well in the future.

Super Simple vocabulary and writing activity freebie! Simply print and copy this b/w worksheet for your students. Allow them to generate a list of activities, things they see, etc. that they love about Halloween. Try to get the kids to put them in order so that they save their most favorite thing for #1.

Do you have two different classes and hate to give them the same test? Here’s your solution. Test their knowledge of chapters 1 – 7 with these two different versions.

Included is:

Both tests are created in a Word document for easy modifications.

-Version 1 includes some characterization matching questions, some multiple choice questions, and two development questions. (4 pages)

-Version 2 is one question that students must answer in paragraph format while developing an argument. (1 page)

-Comprehensive answer keys and rubrics are included for both versions. (3 pages)

Product Description

As any English teacher can tell you, the thesis statement is the most important part of the essay. It defines the arguments and orients the reader. Unfortunately, many students have difficulty with the thesis statement. This is why I have created the “7 Steps to Writing an Effective Thesis Statement” poster.

The poster is a step by step guide on how to write the thesis starting with selecting a topic the student understands and walks them through the process until the end.

I am making the poster available in different formats for facility of use in the classroom: 

– The first format measures 70 cm (27.6 inches) (easy printing) PDF
– The second format measure 97 cm (38.2) – information can be more easily read from further away (easy printing) PDF
– One smaller poster PDF
– An image format JPEG
