FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE Poetry Lesson Mother’s Day Card + Poetry for Older Students/Teens, Sub Plan”

by Laura Randazzo
7th – 12th Grade

Remember the Mother’s Day cards we made back in elementary school? Let’s revisit that tradition for our middle- and high-school students with these print-and-go materials that’ll make a bunch of moms (or stepmoms/grandmas/aunties/loving women) smile on their special day.

Included:

• A student handout featuring 10 slices of poetry about mothers/feminine power.

• Six coloring pages that fold in half to become cards (Print on white paper, colored paper, or cardstock – grab whatever’s available in the copier room and go!)

Suggested lesson procedure:

1. Begin by handing out the page that includes 10 bits of poetry, giving students a few minutes to read them all.

2. Have students choose the poem that reminds them most of their mom/closest maternal figure.

3. Give students a choice of card designs.

4. Inside the card, have them write a loving note to the recipient and include the lines of poetry in their best handwriting.

5. With any remaining time in class, have students color the front of the card with colored pencils or sharp-tipped markers. The coloring portion can be completed in class if time allows or sent home for students to complete on their own time.

Tip: When printing the cards, choose “Print Full Size” on your printer settings. If you choose “Scale to Fit” (the default on many printers), your cards may have unevenly spaced borders.

These pages also work great as print-and-go sub plan materials.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Journal Prompts: Secret Identity All About Me Book w/Hidden Image Coloring (C-D)”

by Teacher’s Palette
3rd – 5th Grade

This is a free sample of an Autobiography Journaling Kit that makes a great keepsake gift to give parents at the end of the school year. In addition to giving students a fun way to practice paragraph development, it has hidden image coloring and personality quizzes that provide a colorful snapshot of the writer’s current memories and interests.

As an optional new spin on the typical All About Me/Getting to Know You activities, students will get to be writers as well as “detectives!” As writers, they will respond to specific autobiography topics by completing focused paragraphs, personality quizzes, hidden image coloring, short explanations, would-you-rather style “quirky questions,” and multiple choice items. As detectives, they will read other students’ autobiography responses and try to guess who wrote them! Teachers can use the individual handouts as a no prep writing activity, or have students compile all 26 sheets into a “mystery binder” for an ongoing writing & reading “guess-who” activity.

In case you choose to use this as a “guess who” activity, it comes with 40 individual Secret Agent names with student instructions, ready for you to hand out to each student. Instead of writing their names in their autobiography journals, students can write their assigned “Secret Agent Name.” There is also a form that students can put at the back of their autobiography binder, where other students who have read their book can write in a guess about who wrote it. As the students keep adding more material to their autobiography, their classmates can continue making guesses about whom it belongs to, so the fun continues all year long!

Each installment in this kit (AB, CD, etc.) provides students with six fun and unique ways to express themselves:

1—Focused Paragraphs – Each section has a specific paragraph topic, with helpful hints and suggestions to get students writing.

2—Hidden Image Coloring – Students get to choose their favorite among three things in a category before trying to find and color in their chosen hidden image. Everyone winds up with a unique, high-quality drawing that expresses their character.

3—Support-Your-Position – Students are asked to explain why they chose one activity or item over the other choices given (⇐ a fun way to practice essay-writing skills).

4—Multiple Choice Opinions – Students are prompted to consider multiple options and then narrow down their choice.

5—Personality Quizzes – These quizzes can be used just for fun, or to help teachers (and students) understand their preferred working style for more effective group work configurations. A “Color Tracker” makes it easy for students to look back at their responses to see if their personality type is mostly red, yellow, green, or blue.

6—“Quirky Questions” – These questions are written in the same spirit as the popular “Would-You-Rather” questions. Students will get a kick out of imagining unusual scenarios and stretching their minds to think about how they might react.

Your download includes sections C & D (“Classroom Favorites” and “Dreamy Destinations”). If you would like to purchase the entire A-Z bundle, please click here: All About Me Bundle by Teacher’s Palette

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Close Read How a Volcano Works”

by Talented in Third
3rd – 5th Grade

This product will help your students learn close reading habits with the help of a free article from ReadWorks.org. The questions included will help you conduct a close reading for this informational text.

***Now includes a digital Google Slides version!!!

*****************************************************************************

It covers all of the Reading Informational Text Standards for the Common Core Third Grade Standards. It is a mixture of multiple choice, short answer, and extended answer questions. The questions are provided, which takes the guesswork out of close reading and allows you to integrate close reading into your daily schedule.

In order to do the reading, just print the article and questions for each student or group and start annotating this informational text. This would work especially well in an interactive notebook, so students can reference it in the future while doing close reading. This will also work as a class read, projected and read together, if printing is limited or not desired, with questions printed or discussed as a class.

*****************************************************************************

The close read questions included correlate to ReadWorks.org’s “Eruption” Part 2. This passage is all about how a volcano works. It is written at grade 3, lexile 820 level. This makes it an advanced individual read or a class/small group read. It can be found at: Eruption.

For this close read, I only used the third page of the text. If you are interested in the other part (pages 1 and 2), please see Close Read “Eruption”, Part 1.

This is all aligned to the Third Grade Common Core Standards, with a focus on asking questions that are aligned to the level of complexity the standards require. Many times, close readings will focus on the standards, but not at the right level of complexity, meaning students are answering questions below the level they need to. This practice doesn’t actually help them develop the skills they need. These questions will help you to focus on asking the right questions, so the practice will match the end of the year assessment, as well as helping your students develop the needed skills to do well in the future.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Pre-Writing Organizer – 4Square”

by Heart2Teach
Kindergarten – 5th Grade

This is great Pre-Writing Organizer to use with beginning writers. The topic or main idea goes in the middle. Then, the three numbered squares are for pictures or sentences about the topic. The fourth square, with the face, is for the picture or sentence about how the topic makes the students feel. It is a great way for students to organize their thoughts. More advanced writers can write paragraphs in each section of the organizer before transferring it to a final draft.

Check out my “corRect Me if iM wrong” activities!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Original Short Story Reading Comprehension Practice Worksheet”

by Shining Scholar Education
8th – 12th Grade

An original short story entitled “Between Death and Life”. This story tells about the death of a man named William Kind (symbolic for the kind of person he was.) Each chapter tells the scene at the emergency room where William dies of a heart attack. The first chapter is told from the perspective of his wife; the second from his son, Michael; the third from the doctor; and the fourth and final chapter is told by William himself. There are review questions after the story for student comprehension and reflection. The margins on the left side were intentionally made wider to facilitate student annotation (see annotation handout linked under “Helpful Resources”) including drawing pictures of events, asking questions, commenting on events, highlighting new vocabulary words, summarizing paragraphs, etc. This is great as a warm-up, class activity, or homework to strengthen reading skills and use of strategies. I am open to feedback and suggestions on how to make this lesson better! Includes 8 multiple-choice questions with answer key. Editable MS Word document.

This lesson is student-centered, meaning:

–it allows you to become a facilitator!

–happier teachers!

–happier students!

–happier administrators!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Phonics Worksheets for ‘AKE’, ‘ACK’, & ‘ALL’ Word Families”

by ESL Lifeline
1st – 2nd Grade

Word family decoding activities are helpful tools for teaching phonics.

This resource offers handouts and activities to learn words in the “-ake”“-ack”, & “-all” word families. These simple activities will introduce your learners to words that are part of each of the same word family. They all center around the theme of Construction Sites.

It comes with printer-friend versions that are included in the package, as well as answer keys. It is best to use this resource while teaching about word families specifically, and the activities included are intended as supplementary.

Phonics handouts are excellent materials to have for interventions. They can be used to get late readers back on track and, for older children, offer a thoughtful way to reinforce previously learned concepts.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Free AAC Training Video E is for Eye Gaze”

by Susan Berkowitz
Kindergarten – 8th Grade

For students who have no other way to access AAC, eye gaze is often the answer. Eye gaze can be high or low tech. E-tran boards and paper-based systems use clear acrylic or plain paper and use the borders and corners of the page, with the central space cut out or clear, so that the partner can see where the individual’s eyes are looking.

Eye gaze can be difficult for students to learn, as the learning curve can initially be steep and the process can be fatiguing.

We often make the mistake of giving students an AAC system with eye gaze technology and going straight to using communication pages – or trying to!

But there is a steep learning curve; and students often need to move through exploring eye gaze with limited purpose, through learning cause and effect, through targeting a specific item in a field, and into turn taking, choosing, and learning to use symbol grids and/or keyboards.

Did you know that almost 90% of learning is through vision? That almost 70% of student with cerebral palsy have either refraction errors or other vision impairments – particularly cortical vision impairment? That most vision impairments go undetected?

For students for whom the physical effort of using a high tech eye gaze system is too overwhelming, simple eye gaze activities can be a strategy for gaining communication without the effort of using more complex eye gaze or hitting a switch.
