Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

This FREE set of Halloween-themed math games includes 3 different versions: multiplication, addition with 2 numbers, and addition with 3 numbers. It’s a fun, engaging way to practice math facts!

These games address the following Common Core Standards* for K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd:

K.OA.A.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.

K.OA.A.5 Fluently add and subtract within 5.

1.OA.B.3 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.

1.OA.C.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).

1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

1.OA.D.8 Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers.

2.OA.B.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

3.OA.A.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.

3.OA.C.7 Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.

Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

Count the Spiders! Math Game Freebie

This is a 2 player game. Each player takes a game board (a spider web). 1, 2, or 3 dice are needed for this game. For younger students, roll one die and place the correct number of spiders on their game board. Counters for counting my 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s are included.
Older students can roll 2 or 3 die and add the numbers together to get the number of spiders they should take. When all of the spiders are gone, the students count the spiders on their game board. The player with the most spiders wins. Directions for a subtraction game are also included.

Common Core Standards:
K.CC.1 Count to 100 by ones and tens.
K.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
K.CC.5 Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
K.CC.6 Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g./ by using matching and counting strategies. (Include groups with up to 10 objects.)
1.OA.3 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.
1.OA.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction
1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

FREE MATH LESSON – “FREE Addition Dice Game and Recording Sheet”

1st – 2nd Grade

This simple addition dice game helps students practice addition facts (sums of 2-12), comparing 2 numbers (more / less) and counting by 2 to add.

The game involves rolling 2 dice, recording the numbers, comparing the numbers and crossing out the number that is less, re-rolling the lower number, adding the final 2 numbers, comparing sums (awarding points for the sum that is higher) and finally, adding up the points by using counting by 2 to get the total.

Each player can use a full page recording sheet OR use the 1/2 size (2 sheets on one page).

This game is can be differentiated by using different dice (with larger numbers or dots vs. numbers).

Update Jan. 2019. At the request of a TPT buyer, I have added a simplified recording sheet. Students just need to roll 2 dice and add the 2 numbers. 🙂

NOTE: This is not your typical bingo game. It is a modified version with less spaces on each game card. It a more of a mixture between bingo and tic-tac-toe.

This game allows students to practice telling time to the 5 minute intervals (:00, :05, :10, :15, etc.) It has a maximum of 6 players, which makes it a great center activity for small groups. It comes with complete student directions, 6 bingo cards, 25 time cards, and bingo chips ready to be cut out.

Free Sample – Problem Solving: Task Cards and Journal Prompts for Kindergarten Math (Common Core)

This set is a sample of my kindergarten Problem Solving set. This set includes six problems on task cards and math journal prompt strips.

This set is designed to get students thinking and talking about math. With the color-coded task cards, you will always have a problem at your fingertips. Use the cards on the carpet or in small groups—even while waiting in line. The problems vary in difficulty and are perfect for think-pair-share and for developing math vocabulary and language. Have the children extend their learning by using the included math journal prompts. Each of the problems is also included as a cut and glue journal prompt. This allows children to draw and write to show their mathematical thinking.

This sample contains one problem from each of the following domains:
Counting and Cardinality (CC)
Numbers and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)
Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)
Geometry Task Cards (G)
Measurement and Data (MD)
Challenge Task Cards (star)

Math Journal Prompts (14 per page)

Learn or reinforce students’ understanding and recognition of:

• Shapes (including heart, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, circle, star, trapezoid, pentagon, diamond/rhombus, hexagon, octagon and cone)

• Shape Names (self-correcting)

• Shape Names (in b/w)

This resource is self-correcting as matching shape and name cards have borders of corresponding colors. For more advanced learners, a set of color name cards have been included in black-and-white.

This will also help your students’ fine motor development as he/she slips the cards in and out of the page protector, which is optional.

Cards would be great assessment tools and useful in special ed or ESL settings as well.

This free math packet comprises 4 worksheets for skill practice using dice:
Addition to 12
Addition to 18
Subtraction from 10
Subtraction from 20

A recording sheet is included. Coloring the stars adds more fun to the exercise. The math activities in this packet support the development of the following concepts: addition and subtraction within 20; addition strategy of counting on; the meaning of the plus, minus and equal signs; commutative property of addition (3+5=5+3).

This activity could be played in a pair or small group. Each player has their own worksheet. Taking turns, if a roll doesn’t match any remaining numerals, move on to the next player’s turn. The first person to color all their stars is the winner.

This is the U.S. version … there is also a British English version listed.

This is a blank template I use often in my classroom during math activities, or as a kind of group exit slip or diagnostic to see if students can spot the error. This resource includes both the powerpoint version (so you can add textboxes over top of where you wish to add your information), or the PDF – which is what I use. I simply project the PDF onto the whiteboard and we use our whiteboard markers to write in the boxes. You can also print and use the blank PDF and use a center or a guided math activity.

I use this activity as reinforcement/review when I see an error commonly happening in the classroom. I can quickly pull up the template (which I have as a shortcut on my computer desktop) and write in the question and incorrect solution. I ask students to look at the incorrect solution, find and circle the error on the board, and then model the correct solution on the right hand side.

The construction and analysis of magic squares provides practice in mental arithmetic, operations with numbers, geometry, and measurement plus it encourages logical reasoning and creativity, all in a game-like setting. Furthermore, they are a powerful tool for teaching students basic addition skills since each row, column, and diagonal must add up to be the same sum.

The three letters of this 10 page free resource are solved in a similar way. Number tiles are arranged in such a manner that the sum of the tiles that form each straight line of the letter equal the same sum. The designated sum for the letter is written on each page as well as the number tiles to be used. Most of the three letter puzzles have more than one answer; so, students are challenged to find a variety of solutions.

The activities require that the students use each number tile only once. However, some of the activities will not require the use of all ten tiles; so, reading and following the directions before beginning each math-a-magical puzzle is important. Answer recording sheets are provided for the student as well as possible solutions for the teacher. A Number Tile Keeper in addition to a blackline of the number tiles is located at the end of this 10 page resource.
