Use of calendars and teaching about time is a functional and engaging activity to support number fluency, understanding of quantities, time related vocabulary, and building a perceptual map of time. Beyond that, it helps to promote character development around issues of waiting, and delay of gratification.

This is a must-read article for all teachers of mathematics as we begin preparing for the new school year.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Become A Math Lawyer-Defend Your Answer poster-labels”

by Pamela Kranz – Desktop Learning Adventures

4th – 8th Grade

Become A Math Lawyer-Defend Your Answer

Become a Math Lawyer, Defend Your Answer! This poster/label set reminds students that solving a problem is more than just writing down an answer. It gives them several checkpoints to consider, including, “Does your answer make sense?”. I frequently pair up students to “defend” their answers. It’s a great way to have them recheck their work before turning it in. It also encourages math conversation. The labels make good reminders when attached to their math journals or notebooks.

This set includes the Math Lawyer poster, as well as a template for labels that fits Avery Labels 5168, 3 1/2 X 5″, in color and a BW version for kids to decorate.

End of the Year Musings

By Deann Marin of Socrates Lantern

Baby Canada GeeseI always approach the end of the school year with mixed emotions, though I’m ecstatic to be out for summer vacation, I always feel a little sad saying good-bye.  Many of my soon to be 7th graders hug me and leave with tears in their eyes, knowing that our little family will no longer be together. All the trials and tribulations, the challenges, the fun times and sad times will be always be with us, but it will never be the same.

Reflecting back to the beginning of the year, I remember how small they were when they first entered my room, some shy and nervous about their first few days, others acting cool trying to impress their peers., especially those they don’t know. The first hurdle over, they’ve opened their lockers. Simple process for some while others end up in tears because they can’t figure out how to do it. By the end of the year, they look back at this and laugh at themselves.

How strict I am the first few weeks, trying very hard not to crack a smile. This is the time to get them into shape. so that we all have a great year. They learn the rules and always test me.  Finally, after awhile, I can let my hair down and be myself. I can crack jokes, they can joke around and we can all laugh together. This is when real learning takes place, and to see their “ah ha,” moments is what teaching is all about.

I love 6th graders, the majority are so willing to learn, that it makes teaching rewarding and enjoyable.. One of my favorite things is our morning discussions. Their backgrounds are quite diverse and I learn something new almost everyday. Many are knowledgeable about a lot of things and they’re eager to share. They can talk about whatever is on their mind, and they feel safe doing so. We are now, officially a family and I’ve become their surrogate parent.Sandhill Crane Flying

As I say good-bye, each of my kids takes a part of me with them.  I feel certain that I’ve given them the support, strength and confidence to move on to seventh grade.   The time has come for them to spread their wings a fly.

When I close the door for the final time, I take comfort in knowing that soon I’ll have another bunch of little chickadees to bring up.

Have a wonderful summer

Deann

FREE MATH LESSON – “Diffy – Fun Subtraction Math Game! Use with Integers, Fractions, Money”

by Rachel Lynette

2nd – 12th Grade

Diffy - Fun Subtraction Math Game

Diffy is a fun and intriguing math game that requires subtraction, logic, and pattern recognition to win. It can be played with whole numbers, negative numbers, fractions, and money. This game is challenging for both kids and adults!

You can play Diffy using the document camera with the whole class, or have students complete their own Diffy games either in worksheet format or at a center with laminated wipe-off sheets.

This download includes:
-Teacher intro and game sample
-Color Diffy game with directions
-Black and white diffy game with directions

These cards will look best in color, but will also print out fine in grayscale. Simply print and cut along the guidelines. Laminate and use them again and again. Alternatively, you could print on cardstock. It works well to keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Counting Coins Made Easy! (Sample Pages)”

by Nicole Rios

1st – 3rd Grade

Counting Coins Made Easy

Are your students having a difficult time with counting coins? The Magic Money method has worked for me for the last 9 years of teaching money to 1st and 2nd graders. This download includes:

– a chart that students might place in their homework/classroom folders with realistic, dual-sided pictures of each coin, coin values, a chant for each coin, and the placement of the dots that will aid them in counting the coins.

– a one-sheet parent explanation of how the Magic Money system works, and how to use it to help their child become successful at counting coins at home

– a hundred chart that specifically aids children in becoming fluent at counting by 5’s (a necessary sub-skill for using this method)

-a coin counting worksheet sample with answer key

-a sample word problem page

This method will work for the vast majority of your students. Don’t worry about them relying on the dots. With time, they will begin to chunk larger values together until they are counting coins in a more traditional way.

If you find this download helpful, this product is part of a larger download “Counting Coins Made Easy with Differentiated Materials” that you can find HERE.

I also offer an ActivInspire flipchart to accompany these learning materials HERE.

FREE MATH LESSON – “FREE Solving Multi-Step Equations Stations Maze Activity”

by Mrs E Teaches Math

7th – 10th Grade

Solving Multi-Step Equations Stations

Stations mazes are great because they get students up and moving around the room. They also encourage students to check their work carefully since an incorrect answer will eventually send them back to a problem they have already solved. Successfully completing the maze requires students to slow down and check their work.

This activity can be completed individually or in pairs. A student answer sheet is included. All of the stations are in color.

There are 10 stations. All of the problems are solving multi step equations. Some of the problems involving parentheses involve distributing. The problems are of various difficulty.
