Students practice reading and writing color words with these differentiated flip strips. Includes three levels to accommodate your students’ writing abilities.

This word work is great for independent work task boxes for special education classrooms. The repetition will help your students learn the task quickly: read – write – flip – repeat. Can also be used as a portable word wall or flashcards.

This is a small part of my Flip Strips BUNDLE which also includes 322 sight words, 60 CVC words and 12 shape words.

This FREE handout explains a fresh approach to Sustained Silent Reading (S.S.R.) procedures to your students. As you’ll see, I use “book talks” with my students instead of traditional book reports, posters, or speech presentations. The SSR book talk is just an informal conversation with the student to determine whether the student actually read the book. Tips for this are included in the PDF download, along with student handouts and a tally sheet to help keep your records organized.

It’s awesome not to have a stack of book reports to grade at the end of each term, but my favorite part of this assignment is the one-on-one time it allows me to spend with each student. Even if the book talk is only two or three minutes, I find it helps to build connections with kids (most of my classes have 35-36 students) that I wouldn’t otherwise have time to make.

Give it a try for one quarter and see how it works for you. Less to grade. More fun for all. Teens really respond well to not having to build yet-another poster board or collage. Some years, they’ve actually cheered when I introduced the assignment.

The file includes two different handouts, appropriate for different reading-skill levels, in two different design styles – a clean-lined modern look and a grungy urban look. Choose the one that’s right for you!

Science Skill Lab: Using a Graph to Find Area

Purpose: In this activity, you will be using a sample of ordinary poster board with uniform thickness to study area. Since the thickness is constant, you can measure the mass and area of rectangular poster board samples and graph the data to find a relationship between mass and area (mass/area). Using the graph, you will then be able to find the unknown area of an irregularly shaped sample of poster board. This is an activity that can be used to teach basic graphing skills as well as the use of basic pieces of lab equipment – the ruler and the balance.

Materials needed: Balance, 4 samples of poster board of regular shape, 1 irregular sample, graph paper, ruler, pencil.

This St. Patrick’s Day resource has opportunities for reading, making a mini book, drawing, coloring, working with compound words, and writing.
This original story is about a boy who has a knack for fooling a sneaky leprechaun. Kids will read how Peter tricked a leprechaun in this mini book.

Kids illustrate some of the pages to show comprehension. Writing pages check comprehension, as well as include prompts such as “What would you do if you had a pot of gold?”

~Mini book (12 half pages) for students to assemble, read and illustrate.
~Black and white for economical printing and coloring
~Print single-sided
~Cut and staple together for a simple little book to read and illustrate individually or with a reading buddy.
~Three additional full pages for responding to the text, working with compound words, and writing prompts.

This free product has 42 puzzles that include the concepts of solid shapes (cone, cube, sphere, and cylinder), hour time (12:00-5:00), antonyms or opposites, rhyming, homonyms, time sequence, size sequence, and things that go together.

There is one whole page for each concept. It has six puzzles each for solids, time, opposites, rhyming, things that go together and homonyms, plus three puzzles each for size and time sequence.

They can be used for introducing, reviewing, or evaluating these concepts one to one, in small groups or centers. They are also fun to use in game activities, like ©Concentration.

Print, laminate, cut apart, and use year after year!

This is an activity that I used in my Elementary Tech classes to refresh what we learned last year about Microsoft Word basics.

Directions: Students will start with their name on their computer. They will then rotate every 30 seconds to answer one of the following questions that I call out. Think of this as a teacher directed game of SCOOT. If you have older students, you could also print these out as task cards. The students will have a good time laughing at their “Fake About Me” when they get back to their seat. After a quick refresher of where to locate the following items, I had the students change fonts, colors, and sizes of text as well as adding pictures of the items in their lists.
