FREE MISC. LESSON – “Back To School Parent’s Guide for 1st – 5th Grade”

by The Teacher Next Door

Pre-Kindergarten – 5th Grade

Back To School Parent's Guide for 1st - 5th Grade

This Parent’s Guide is a great tool to give to parents at Back To School Night. It organizes important classroom information and serves as a handy reference guide. I love it because it also serves as a talking point tool for my Back To School speech.

This Parent Guide is a Word Document, so you’re able to customize it to fit your own classroom’s needs. The five page handout can then be copied back to back and folded to create a mini-booklet for your student’s parents.

The copying of the book can be a little tricky, so here’s how I do it:

To make the booklet, run the cover by itself. The next two pages are back to back: Getting to Know Miss Larson with Communication and also back to back are 5th Grade Curriculum with Grading, Daily Work and Homework.

When you do it this way, the pages will be in order: Cover, Getting to Know _______, Communication, 5th Grade Curriculum, Grading, Discipline, Birthdays, Misc. Notes, Larsonease and the back cover (important numbers). Hope this helps!

If you could take the time to give some feedback for this freebie, I would truly appreciate it!

Thanks!
Jenn

Starting a Reading Buddies program in your classroom? Some tips and a freebie!

Starting a #ReadingBuddies program in your classroom- Some tips and a freebie to get you started!

Thinking about starting a Reading Buddies program in your classroom this year? Here are some tips and tools to get things rolling!

Consider putting School-wide Reading Buddies on a staff meeting agenda.

Discuss the benefits for all students with your divisional leads and administration, and even if the seed of the idea is planted to be reassessed next year, it will give you a sense of who might be open to a pairing for this year.

Take age into consideration.

An age / grade difference of 2-3 years between buddies puts a clear boundary between who the big buddies and little buddies are.

Approach a colleague about pairing classes…

…and be realistic about whether your schedules will work! Casual conversation over lunch can often accomplish this, but it seems like our time is less our own these days! I have created this free letter and form to simplify the process:

Reading Buddies teacher letter free

Build Reading Buddy time into your timetable.

When ‘it’s official’ everyone knows what to expect, when. Perhaps it is alternate week familiar reading, word-work, or math skills review through games, part of character education or religious education for forty minutes. While  may Reading Buddies may not appear in on the timetable your principal has to hand in to the school board, it’s important that the kids have this special time to look forward to. It could even happen over lunch!

Define expectations to both classes.

This is accomplished best if done as individual classes, as the expectations differ for the age groups in some ways. Review general expectations when they are brought together for the first few times, and provide visual reminders. Reading Buddies time can quickly look like recess if sixty kids are unsure of what the rules are, half the kids, ‘read the book already’ and have decided to hang out with someone else!

Talk to your partner class’ teacher about general and specific expectations.

I wrote general expectations in a storybook lesson format for my students, explaining to the bigger buddies (third graders) ‘This is what I am reading to your little buddies‘ (kindergarters). One of my valued TpT customers reads her class the story, then posts the pages on a bulletin board! I love that!

Here are some ideas for general expectations from my Reading Buddies Starter pack:

Student expectations defined in That Fun Reading Teacher's Reading Buddies Starter Pack

What are some expectations that you find important to put in place during Reading Buddies time?

Best wishes to all you!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Greek and Latin Roots Lesson Plan Free Download”

by The Illustrated Classroom

3rd – 8th Grade

Greek and Latin Roots Lesson Plan

This Greek and Latin roots lesson combines the enjoyment of art and creativity with the rigor of vocabulary development. It is basically a mnemonic activity, designed to help students commit the meanings of the Greek and Latin stems to memory.

I made this lesson for a summer school English class made up of students with reading levels ranging from 4th to 9th grades. Classes were two hours per day. I gave them five class periods to finish. I gave extra credit for coloring. The more time they spend on the imagery, the more they are absorbing the meaning of the root.

I can’t over-state how much success I have had with this lesson. It’s ideal for visual learners but fun for everyone (and easy to grade, too!) It keeps the kids interacting with roots and stems over long periods of time. It forces them to synthesize the roots and apply their knowledge in an original way, a personal way that has meaning for them. The best part is, it is simple and doesn’t require a lot of complex input or instructions from the teacher. Just show them an example, give them the materials and the list of roots and away they go.

Research shows that vocabulary development through the mastery of Greek and Latin roots and stems is a key component to improving test scores on standardized tests such as the GRE, SAT, CST, AP exams and State standardized tests.

This is a stand-alone, free product. You don’t have to buy any of my other products to make this lesson work. If you are interested in increasing the depth, breadth, and time you students spend learning Greek and Latin roots, check out some of my companion products that complement this lesson.

Common Core Aligned
Greek and Latin roots, suffixes, and prefixes, sometimes called word stems or word forms, are part of the Common Core Standards from third grade to tenth grade.

Why is it important?
Greek roots are word parts that have meaning. They are the building blocks of thousands of English words. Chronology, polygon, bicycle, telescope, astrophysics, hyperventilate — the list goes on an on — all these words contain one or two Greek roots.

Knowledge of word roots and their meaning is important and useful for our students because it gives them the ability to decode the meaning of unfamiliar words in a variety of situations.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Holocaust/WW II/Schindler’s List/CCSS Questions/Vocabulary/Prezi”

by Linda Jennifer

9th – 12th Grade

Holocaust-WW II-Schindler's List

Schindler’s List
the Holocaust
WW II
non-fictionThis is a small part of my larger TpT unit on Schindler’s List – my more in-depth unit combines the questions that are included here and adds other questions and competences:

Schindler’s List: test/essay questions/a Prezi.

The CCSS “lay out a vision of what it means to be a literate person in the 21st century.” Integrating film into your curriculum is an excellent way to satisfy many of the new Common Core State Standards.

TEACHER TIP:
You don’t need to show entire films, just short clips of these films, to develop competences deemed essential in the new CCSS guidelines.

INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT ARE THE FOLLOWING:

➢ A PREZI with clips from the film

➢ A multiple choice quiz with six questions and answers

➢ Vocabulary – definitions for words that are crucial for understanding the Holocaust

➢ Information on Oskar Schindler

➢ Essay questions and discussion questions

➢ Questions aligned with ELA-Literacy CCSS 8-12 – in particular with the following standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.8.1
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.8.4
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.2
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.9-10.4
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.8.7
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.11-12.7

I teach SCHINDLER’S LIST as a TEXTURE TEXT or a CONTEXT TEXT usually alongside THE REPUBLIC. It is an excellent film to use when studying philosophical concepts including, but not limited to, the following: morality, ethics, sacrifice, freedom, courage, and the power of hope.

If you are interested in engaging your students in higher order thinking (focusing on texts and ideas that raise questions regarding justice, mercy, power, ethics, and hope) please FOLLOW ME to be informed of my upcoming units on Plato’s Republic and Nietzsche’s Thus Spake Zarathustra. I have several posted already. See the following:

Back to School – Number Counting Posters

It might be “Christmas in July” but it’s “BACK TO SCHOOL” in August!  Here’s a photo of my boxwood bushes done up with lights during the past holiday season.christmas in july freebieWell, it’s not Christmas yet but I do have a FREEBIE for you.  Read on.

I’ve just finished a GIANT file of numeral and number counting posters.  The posters have mosaic backgrounds.  I purchased these papers from Bev’s Learning Hut and I couldn’t be more pleased with how beautiful they turned out!  Best of all, mosaic designs have been in existence for a long time and they NEVER go out of style!

There are a total of SEVEN sets of colors in the priced file.  I’m offering one set as a FREEBIE.  (Merry Christmas in July!)  The colors included in the larger file are red, blue, green, pink, orange, purple, and light blue.  You’re getting the red set with blue fish!

Each set of posters includes numerals zero through twenty.  There are colorful fish displayed on the posters to match each numeral shown.  The children can practice counting skills by counting the fish on any given poster.  If you display the posters at the children’s eye level on your classroom wall, they can practice counting during their spare time.

Each numeral is approximately 7 centimeters tall.  The numeral font that I used is a ideal for modeling correct numeral formation.  The numeral “4” is formed with straight lines.  The line on the numeral “9” is straight so that is does not appear like an upside down “6”.

I have created these poster with simplicity in mind so that educators can use them to focus on a few of the related Common Core Math Standards for kindergarten.  Those are:

1.  Writing numerals 0 to 20.

2.  Reading numbers 0 to 20.

3.  Counting up to 20 objects (with numbers 0 to 10 in scattered formation) and naming the corresponding number.

You will need colored ink to print the posters.  I recommend printing them with white cardstock paper.  If you’d like, laminate them for long lasting use.

The slide show below shows some of the posters from the large file.  You might notice that I was able to print without a white edge around my pages.  The mosaic backgrounds are very attractive when there is NO WHITE BORDER.  Plus, printing without the white edge means that you won’t spend any time trimming.  I’ve included a tutorial on how to print without the white border.  You can also view this blog post to see picture directions:  Borderless Printing Tips for Teachers.

Click the FIRST image to view the posters at my Teachers Pay Teachers shop.  Click the SECOND image to get the FREE, 0 to 20 number posters with the red mosaic style.number-postersnumber-counting-postersI hope that you are enjoying your summer break!  School will be coming soon!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Reading Scavenger Hunt: A Print Awareness Activity”

by Growing Smart Readers

Pre-Kindergarten – 6th Grade

Reading Scavenger Hunt

Print is all around us in many forms. Media literacy and environmental literacy make up another layer of literacy!

For families of young children:

Use this as a take-home family project or for an individual homework activity. This download includes 2 different take-home printables, or two versions. You can hand out one at the beginning of the year, and the second one later on, or let the kids choose which one to take home.

For families of all ages!
Kids take this home to do with their families or siblings. It’s a great opportunity for your youngsters to see that environmental print and media text (no matter how big or small) is all around us!

I use reading scavenger hunts as one of my annual literacy week activities. Each reading hunt is a simple checklist, but it has a multi-purpose: to teach print awareness, encourage family reading, and open up new opportunities for reading and writing in and outside the home.

Inter-generational use:
Emergent and beginning readers would share this activity with a sibling, a parent, or grandparent, or caregiver. Perfect for after school programs, too!

For ESL students:
It’s also a natural way to bring print awareness to your students who are learning English as a second language.

In this file, you’ll receive:
1 page of activity suggestions and directions
2 different reading scavenger hunt activities (one page each)

Option
You set the deadline date in the space, and the number of how many items they need to find, read, and check off. They check off items that they have found and read. They must bring in a little proof (i.e., a coupon, a note, or a label) as part of the assignment. Parents, or guardians and students must sign at the bottom to verify the scavenger hunt was completed. Yes, it is pretty much an honor system, but everyone has fun doing it. I usually hand out little prizes for completing this (pencils, bookmarks, fun erasers, or Smarties candies…). You really can make this as fun as you want!

FEEL FREE TO PASS THIS ALONG TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS! (You may send it to them via email, too. I just ask that this is not sold or repackaged, and this store link and Growing Smart Readers remains as the source. Thanks!)

My Growing Smart Readers Blog

Please enjoy and leave feedback if you found this to be a helpful resource. Thanks very much!

by A Series of 3rd Grade Events

3rd – 5th Grade

French Version of Math Vocabulary

My Math Vocabulary freebie is now translated into French thanks to a fellow teacher named Veronica Doyle. She contacted me and asked if she could help me translate the math vocabulary into French so her students could benefit from it as well as others.

This set of French Math Word Wall Words includes words with visual presentations for addition, subtraction, place value, multiplication, division, perimeter, area, fractions, and decimals. It is primarily for 4th and 5th grade, but most words could be used for 3rd grade as well. It also includes an extra page of words that Veronica felt were important.

Enjoy!
