Do you ever have issues with students who never seem to listen to the directions, even after you have given them 3 and 4 times? I know I have in the past, so I decided to do some listening skills practice activities in order to fine-tune their listening capabilities.

After giving my students a short listening task, I either graded the work (which became an eye opener for some!) or we used it as a teachable mini-lesson on what should have been done better. Sometimes I even rewarded the student who received the best score as an exemplary way to listen and follow directions. The reward usually involved a little extra computer time or maybe being the line leader for the day.

Sometimes we assume that students know how to listen and that if we give directions several times they should be able to hear, listen, and apply. Unfortunately some students need to continuously practice that skill, much like any other curriculum strategy. Following Directions in the Common Core Classroom will not only help your students to be more keenly aware of oral directions, but also help you with expected classroom routines and procedures.

Introducing the Reading Skills Weather Wheel!

The wheel is divided into four wedges of weather. Each wedge is guarded by a mischievous fairy who will ask the students 3 questions. If they pass they could receive a valuable prize and many life points (which can be tallied on a board for a winner). If they fail these questions then they risk their points and even their life!

A few of the skills covered include: main idea, summary, context clues, author’s purpose and more!

This is interactive and best played on an interactive whiteboard although not required.

The teacher plays the judge and jury. You will decide if they have answered the question to your standards. Then choose the thumbs up or thumbs down to send them on their next leg of their journey.

How to Add Animated Photos to the TpT Quote Area

In the Teachers Pay Teachers store, the quote area can be animated to help engage viewers. This is a set of steps which can be used to created animated photos using PowerPoint and free online sites.

Now includes a free blank PowerPoint with correctly sized slides. Just add your own images!

This is a simple approach to making the animation. There are other possibilities, but this approach should be something most TpT’ers can do with just a very little knowledge of HTML. Step one has a link to a YouTube video demonstration that accompanies this one page PDF.

A cute way to teach the seasons. Each page has the starter of “I Like _____ because”. Students will write why they like that season. They can also draw a picture to go with their writing.

A student example is provided. Students cut out the template and glued it to construction paper folded in half. We then glued the pages together and made a book. Great keepsake!

Students place one number card at a time on a game board to form a 3 digit + 3 digit equation. Once a number card is placed on the game board, it cannot be moved. The student with the highest correct answer wins. Students review addition as they use logic and problem solve to find the highest answer.

Here are two activities when teachers need a few go to lessons for exploring the elements of literature, in this case-Character.

These engaging activities will hook Middle School and High School students into reading and writing about the text that they are studying.The two activities will check off two of your, “Need to Do” boxes.

Not only will they engage students in their character exploration of the people they meet in their reading, but they will also allow your charges to reveal their own personalities and thoughts.

This is a great way for young people to turn their private “The Me You Don’t Know” traits and thoughts into their “The Me I Want You to Know” word pictures that they are willing to share publicly.

Also, these FREE activities fulfill two requirements objectives on most lesson plans- they will jump start students’ higher level thinking skills and give them a chance to exhibit their thinking in their writing.

Young people love to talk about their lives and to offer what they choose about themselves. Here is their chance to do so while they are analyzing literature.

NOTE: although these work as great activities at the beginning of the year for you to get to know your students and for them to learn about each other, they are good throughout the year. As students add to their understanding about types of characters, they will be showing their dynamic and round sides.

This product is aligned with Common Core Standards and Bloom’s Taxonomy:
Reading: R1, 3, 10
Writing: W1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10
Speaking and Listening: SL 3, 4,
Language: L 1, 2, 6

The packet provides cursive handwriting practice together with reading comprehension in a contextualized and meaningful way. Instead of practicing writing letters and words in isolation, this packet helps students review science concepts while improving their handwriting skills.

The topic in this sample is The Skeletal System ( 2 pages).

Do your students need a fun way to practice their multiplication facts? There are FIVE different color by multiplication pictures each, ready for your kids to color as they solve each multiplication equation.

Pirate Multiplication Puzzles

The five pictures vary in difficulty, ranging from a small anchor that only requires two multiplication equation solutions to an almost full page scene with a pirate ship that requires over 50 solutions.

You can use these as assessments, in centers, as independent work, etc. Simply print the pages out and distribute to students as desired. This allows for differentiation as you can choose the easier pictures for struggling students and the more challenging pictures for students who need more of a challenge. For your students needing additional practice, start at the anchor picture, then the flag, followed by the treasure chest. If your students are already proficient with their multiplication facts/equations, start them at the scene with the parrot or the scene with the pirate ship!
