Although all Middle School and High School programs of study require core whole-class nonfiction readings, as often as possible, students should choose nonfiction informational reading that hooks their personal interest.

The kids will be more inclined to want to read a topic of their choice (ownership) which will lead to the desire to express their thoughts and interpretations clearly and coherently. Their reading and writing proficiencies will blossom and solidify. This is a win-win teaching/learning idea for teachers and students.

A list of 30 different topics students may do their research paper on. Some of the topics are very controversial (gun control, abortion, immigration, etc), but since this is a RESEARCH paper, students enjoy the controversial topics because it allows them to tell their point of view and back it up with evidence!

Other topics are generic and fun colleges, decades, health impairments, etc and are great for lower-level students or students that do not want to write on something that may be too controversial for them.

Using this list, students must pick a topic and formulate a question they will answer in their research paper. My students loved it because it gave them freedom to write about something they were passionate about or interested in.

Simplify your life and make grammar fun and effective.

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit in grammar with everything else I had to teach. I would give students grammar pages and then we would correct them together. It was tedious and it took forever! What’s more is that students were not learning the way I wanted them to. They wouldn’t apply what they had learned from the grammar pages and activities.

I found a solution!

Grammar Circles. Grammar Circles are very similar to literature circles in the sense that students are teaching one another grammar. It is a fun and functional way to teach and learn grammar. Although, this may be done individually, it can also be completed as a group where students, through a specific process outlined in the package, teach one another grammar. They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes, directions, and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (16 pages)
Activities included focus on:
-the logistics of the sentence (the basic parts)
-the prepositional phrase
-the adjective phrase
-the adverb phrase
-the verbal phrase
-the appositive phrase
-the independent and subordinate clauses
-subjects and predicates
-fragments
-run-on sentences
-types of sentences

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their own work and learn from one another.

Increasingly, teachers are being asked to write more detailed comments to highlight students’ strengths and weaknesses, and sometimes we run out of ideas. Being the vigilant teachers we are, and wanting to help our students achieve their potential is and will always be one of our priorities. To this end, when marking students’ papers, writing down everything we want to say to them about their papers would be a very lengthy process. I have decided to share my personal comment bank with you.

The bank comments on the following areas:

Are pencils driving you crazy?

Students not having a pencil?

Losing them? Breaking the tip?

The pencil craze got to me too! It doesn’t need to! During my student teaching we had cups with pencils at each group that we sharpened every morning and ensured there were plenty in each cup, which was great! That was in first grade. Over the years, I became use to about 2-3 students per class not having a pencil, therefore, I always purchased a box or two at a time and handed pencils out to those students. This year was a little different for me and the pencil craze got me! So many lost pencils, broken pencil tips, or students just didn’t have a pencil.

I felt pencil crazed! A solution must be found!!!

After much thought I came up with my “Pencil Station”!
