Tic Tac Toe is a fun and easy way to encourage students to practice speech sounds in school and at home WITH a parent or guardian. Enjoy this freebie that showcases Aric Tac Toe by sharing with you 3 pages for the /B/ phoneme. Each page provides 36 word and picture combinations to provide varied sound practice.

This is a no prep and NO COLOR INK activity. Simply make a copy of the page that corresponds with the student’s goals, slip it in a laminated sleeve and use dry erase markers to play the game during therapy. Then slip it out of the cover and send it home to be completed with pen/pencil/crayon/marker/daubers. When the page is returned it is easy to see what was practiced.

Words are designed to encourage new vocabulary exposure while working on articulation. These pages could also be used to practice defining or for MLU expansion.

As ESL ELD teachers we are always worried about misidentification of English learners. Specific Learning Disability (SLD) is a language and literacy-related disability referring to a psychological processing disorder. If focuses on understanding or using spoken or written language. Determining whether an ELL’s learning difficulties are from language or something else is a tangled web.

As teams of educators ponder how to work best with English Learners they can reflect on a many different approaches. Here is a preliminary list of considerations I offer our staff.

Keep track of students with missing and/or incomplete homework with this daily homework log and tracker. Students will record each night’s homework assignments on the homework log. There is even a place for parents to sign each day to verify they have checked their child’s homework. Upon collection of each child’s homework, the teacher will record missing assignments, missing parent signatures, missing written assignments on the log, and missing names on papers.
This is a simple and easy way to help children remember their homework assignments and to assist teachers in tracking them.
You will need to print one page per day to track (record) students’ homework and one page per week per student to record the homework assignments.

The Bridge Home by Padma Venkatraman is a moving account of four homeless children who struggle to survive together and grow to become a family.

This resource is designed to introduce students to the novel, the author and some background information on India’s Ragpickers.

What’s included:

A suggested lesson plan
A journal entry that asks students to study the cover and make predictions based on some leading questions. It also includes a direct link to the book trailer.
A 7 Word Challenge puzzle on the author, Padma Venkatraman. The puzzle requires students to complete a bit of research using on-line sources (the links are provided). This activity requires students to read carefully to decipher clues and come up with a word that fits the description based on the letter tiles provided.
An active listening worksheet that students complete after watching “India’s Ragpickers – the Harsh Reality.” The worksheet also includes opportunities for student response to certain aspects of the video.

These labels are for streamlining your notes as you observe students during math workshop (or any time). During the class, you can jot down the student’s name, and then use the checklist to help save time in writing down a note. At the end of the day (or week) you can transfer the sticker to an index card for each student (as shown in the picture), a student folder, or s student binder. The labels come in 3 different forms (as shown in the preview).
*Note: These labels work with Avery 5260 labels.

This Greek and Latin roots lesson combines the enjoyment of art and creativity with the rigor of vocabulary development. It is basically a mnemonic activity, designed to help students commit the meanings of the Greek and Latin stems to memory.

I made this lesson for a summer school English class made up of students with reading levels ranging from 4th to 9th grades. Classes were two hours per day. I gave them five class periods to finish. I gave extra credit for coloring. The more time they spend on the imagery, the more they are absorbing the meaning of the root.

I can’t over-state how much success I have had with this lesson. It’s ideal for visual learners but fun for everyone (and easy to grade, too!) It keeps the kids interacting with roots and stems over long periods of time. It forces them to synthesize the roots and apply their knowledge in an original way, a personal way that has meaning for them. The best part is, it is simple and doesn’t require a lot of complex input or instructions from the teacher. Just show them an example, give them the materials and the list of roots and away they go.

Research shows that vocabulary development through the mastery of Greek and Latin roots and stems is a key component to improving test scores on standardized tests such as the GRE, SAT, CST, AP exams and State standardized tests.

This is a stand-alone, free product. You don’t have to buy any of my other products to make this lesson work. If you are interested in increasing the depth, breadth, and time you students spend learning Greek and Latin roots, check out some of my companion products that complement this lesson.

Greek and Latin roots, suffixes, and prefixes, sometimes called word stems or word forms, are part of the Common Core Standards from third grade to tenth grade.

Why is it important?

Greek roots are word parts that have meaning. They are the building blocks of thousands of English words. Chronology, polygon, bicycle, telescope, astrophysics, hyperventilate — the list goes on an on — all these words contain one or two Greek roots.

Knowledge of word roots and their meaning is important and useful for our students because it gives them the ability to decode the meaning of unfamiliar words in a variety of situations.

As we all know, a major component of the Common Core State Standards is students being able to self assess their learning and evaluating the work they produce. Therefore, it is our job as teachers to provide students with a list of measurable criteria that they can use to self assess their progress towards a learning target. In addition, the list of measurable criteria can help you to create models of exemplary work that students can also use to self assess. This step by step handout will help you to focus on the learning target to identify essential learning and develop how students will demonstrate mastery of the learning target. You can then take these pieces of the puzzle to create clear and specific statements that describe exactly what your students needs to do to master their learning in any subject. There is also a model handout already completed to help guide you through the process of creating measurable criteria.

This file contains a poster to help describe the “glow and grow” assessment strategy to your students. Students use a yellow highlighter (glow) to show on their work where they have met or exceeded expectations. They use a green highlighter to show where they need to “grow” in their work. The file also contains two handouts (one for self/teacher assessment, and one for self/peer assessment) where they describe what they have selected for glow and grow. This assessment strategy can be used for any subject area.
