FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Reading Scavenger Hunt: A Print Awareness Activity”

by Growing Smart Readers
Pre-Kindergarten – 6th Grade

Print is all around us in many forms. Media literacy and environmental literacy make up another layer of literacy!

For families of young children:

Use this as a take-home family project or for an individual homework activity. This download includes 2 different take-home printables, or two versions. You can hand out one at the beginning of the year, and the second one later on, or let the kids choose which one to take home.

For families of all ages!
Kids take this home to do with their families or siblings. It’s a great opportunity for your youngsters to see that environmental print and media text (no matter how big or small) is all around us!

I use reading scavenger hunts as one of my annual literacy week activities. Each reading hunt is a simple checklist, but it has a multi-purpose: to teach print awareness, encourage family reading, and open up new opportunities for reading and writing in and outside the home.

Inter-generational use:
Emergent and beginning readers would share this activity with a sibling, a parent, or grandparent, or caregiver. Perfect for after school programs, too!

For ESL students:
It’s also a natural way to bring print awareness to your students who are learning English as a second language.

In this file, you’ll receive:
1 page of activity suggestions and directions
2 different reading scavenger hunt activities (one page each)

Option
You set the deadline date in the space, and the number of how many items they need to find, read, and check off. They check off items that they have found and read. They must bring in a little proof (i.e., a coupon, a note, or a label) as part of the assignment. Parents, or guardians and students must sign at the bottom to verify the scavenger hunt was completed. Yes, it is pretty much an honor system, but everyone has fun doing it. I usually hand out little prizes for completing this (pencils, bookmarks, fun erasers, or Smarties candies…). You really can make this as fun as you want!

FEEL FREE TO PASS THIS ALONG TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS! (You may send it to them via email, too. I just ask that this is not sold or repackaged, and this store link and Growing Smart Readers remains as the source. Thanks!)

My Growing Smart Readers Blog

Please enjoy and leave feedback if you found this to be a helpful resource. Thanks very much!

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Editable Classroom Job Cards”

by Core Inspiration by Laura Santos
2nd – 6th Grade

Implementing a classroom job system is a breeze with these detailed job cards. These cards are designed to help you boost the ownership your students have for their learning space. The format of each card includes a job title, a weekly salary, a brief description of the job, and a list of important reminders that help students carry out the job carefully and completely.

These cards can be a game changer in your classroom when it comes to maximizing the productivity of your tidy up time each day. Students can easily check the expectations for their job, boosting their ability to carry out a class job successfully and independently.

If you are interested in making your classroom jobs even more meaningful for students, consider implementing a classroom economy system. My Editable Classroom Economy Toolkit includes job applications, class cash used to pay student salaries, and a collection of class passes students can purchase with their hard-earned class cash.

***************************************************************************

What size are the cards?

These 3”x5.5” cards are arranged with multiple cards per page for easy printing on 8.5″x11″ paper. Once you edit, print, laminate, and cut your cards, they fit perfectly into standard-sized library pockets, making them perfect for a rotating job board. A photo of my job board is included in the teacher guide for inspiration.

What makes these job cards unique?

Each job title is accompanied by a short job description and behavior reminders to help your students complete each job successfully. Often times, students forget how to properly perform classroom jobs throughout the year. These detailed job cards are a perfect reference.

Why do some jobs have multiple cards?

Some of the more involved jobs have more than one card so multiple students can share that job, and feel successful working to meet the job expectations as a team each day.

Are these editable?

Yes. All the text on each job card is fully editable so you can tweak the job descriptions, and add jobs to fit the unique needs of your classroom. If the included job descriptions are a perfect match for your classroom, I have also included a ready-to-print version of the cards.

***************************************************************************

Palindromes in Words and Numbers
I was getting ready to pay for my meal at a buffet when I noticed the cashier’s name tag. It read “Anna” to which I replied, “Your name is a palindrome!” The cashier just stared at me in disbelief. I explained that a palindrome was letters that read the same backwards as forwards. Because you could read her name forwards and backwards, it qualified as a palindrome. In fact, February 22, 2022 will be a palindrome if written as 2-22-22!

Spelling Flip Book

Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flipbook when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

FREE SCIENCE LESSON – “Self-Grading Editable Digital Notebook: Isotopes”

by Lab In Every Lesson
6th – 12th Grade

ONGOING use of this product requires a paid membership ($9/month or $49/year) to BookWidgets, the technology upon which the content is built. It enables teachers to modify the content of the digital interactive notebook, integrate the assignment into Google Classroom, view responses students submit electronically, automatically grade and analyze data from the free exit ticket which may be provided at the end of the coordinating interactive science lesson.

A 30-day free trial from BookWidgets is available, though, and it’s the reason I make this particular product free in my store. Take advantage of this opportunity to explore the back end that only you will be able to view and edit!

digital interactive notebook containing the same content but without the ability for teacher manipulation is also available for sale in the store. With the basic version, students will be able to complete the assignment and download it to their computer or print it. Electronic submission will not be possible.

___________________________________________________________

From using this digital interactive notebook, students will learn about isotopes so they can:

  1. talk like a scientist!
  2. recognize the difference between mass number, exact atomic mass, and average atomic mass.
  3. explain radioactivity.

Both you and your students will know they are successful when they can:

  1. define terms on the Word Wall.
  2. determine the composition of the nucleus for various isotopes.
  3. name isotopes using their mass number.
  4. explain how mass number is different from exact atomic mass.

The digital interactive notebook is built for independent student use. With the link, students can download their electronic work and save it to a folder on their computer or print it to compile hard copy evidence of their investigations. It includes all components of my interactive science lessons including activation and integrations of prior knowledge, guidance through active learning experiences and assessment of mastery through skill practice.

The following components are included in this digital interactive notebook to support student centered learning:

  • a “Review & Preview” activity to activate and assess prior knowledge.
  • a “Word Wall” which showcases vocabulary that is central to the lesson content.
  • analytical reading or writing components to promote scientific literacy.
  • at least one independent or small group learning experience which allows (1) students to create artifacts as evidence of their learning and (2) teachers to review main ideas with the whole group.
  • data-dependent analysis of the learning experience outcomes.
  • detailed answer keys for the outlined activities.
  • formative assessment of mastery.

This digital interactive notebook offers incredible flexibility with regard to delivery of the lesson:

  • use as a companion to the corresponding interactive science lesson.
  • use as the foundation for an interactive science notebook.
  • use part of the web form as an introduction to the lesson.
  • assign part or all of the web form as homework.
  • use as a distance learning resource
  • use on a day during which a substitute leads class.

Free Group and Skit Evaluation Rubric

Description

Group work is always tricky to evaluate because there is so much going on. In addition, as educators, we are required to give detailed feedback on students’ performances.

I created this FREE document to make the teacher’s job easier, and to allow students to be responsible for their success as well.

Self-evaluation grids are a great way to guide students in their evaluations. Students will know exactly what is expected of them and will be made responsible for their success. This package can also easily be changed to be used as peer evaluations.

This self-evaluation grid will help students as well as teachers to assess students’ group work. When students use this grid to assess their work, there are no surprises when they receive their final mark. This grid, in particular, allows the students to become organized and responsible for their individual parts.

These self-evaluation grids are also very helpful to teachers:

❒ Helps the teacher justify the final mark;

❒ Helps to identify students’ weaknesses and strengths;

❒ Helps parents and students better understand the task required;

❒ Helps teachers create rubrics for the final evaluation.

Because of formatting issues, this package was created in a PDF document, but I can easily email you a Word file to be easily modified and changed according to the individual teacher’s needs.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Finding Proof-Text Evidence-Inferencing (THE FREEBIE)/Reading Comp Practice/CCSS”

by The Zoo Librarian
2nd – 6th Grade

This product is designed to pick up where other color-coded text evidence activities leave off. As students get older, they are using more and more of their evidence in their writing. They are expected to provide longer written answers. Still, we have reluctant writers in our classrooms. We have times when we need to give our upper elementary students a reminder about the importance of providing text evidence as support for their statements. I have used this activity as bell work, homework, and this year, I have also sent it home as part of my students’ ELA summer work requirements. This particular packet is a freebie so that you can see just how helpful Prove It or Lose It activities will be in your classroom! This free packet contains two activities based on movies your students will know and love.

Please message with any questions. Don’t forget to leave feedback and earn your TPT credits…it’s like free money!

** During this time when we are out of school and engaging with our students online and in a distance learning capacity, you may distribute my products to you students using the internet (but not in a way so that they are available to EVERYONE on the internet) Ex: Google Classroom is fine!**

I Dreaded My Third Period Class
It was cold and blustery outside, one of those days you just wanted to stay under the covers, but truth be told, I immediately thought about how I dreaded my third period class, I so wanted to turn over and forget about it for a while. I knew I had to face it, so I begrudgingly got out of bed. Alas, it was only hump day, and I had a busy schedule, so I dragged myself out of bed, had my cup of coffee and a piece of toast.

New Year, New Focus

First week back after winter break. . . what a week! With our classroom numbers fluctuating due to students quarantining or testing positive, and so much uncertainty, diving right into the curriculum was not an option. We went back to the basics: what do we need to improve in?

************************************
Under The Blotter: Engagement Questions
Need a way to encourage independent reading? I have kept these particular reading engagement questions under my desk blotter for many, many years—so many that I don’t even know who did the research for them, but I do know these questions are effective in improving reading motivation, in the person who responds, AND in those who listen to the answers.

The Beauty of Math Patterns

Some people say mathematics is the science of patterns which I think is a pretty accurate description. Not only do patterns take on many forms, but they occur in every part of mathematics. But then again patterns occur in other disciplines as well. They can be sequential, spatial, temporal, and even linguistic. Discover more about pattern in this blog post.

The Best Gift of All: Connection

One of the biggest challenges I’ve noticed since being back in school in person is the need for conversational skills. In class during morning meeting, we spend time devoted to talking and interacting with one another. While I can foster this in the classroom, I know practicing communication skills need to continue at home.

Measuring Snow – A Craft for the Un-Crafty

I am not a very crafty person; so, I am always looking for items that are easy to make that I can give to my grandchildren. One year, I gave them a snowman making kit that included buttons, a carrot, six rocks and two sticks. This year, I am giving them a Snow Measuring Tool. Not is it only fun to use, but it also helps them to practice using a ruler. Learn how you can make one!
