The Common Core for 4th Grade states that students should be able to “find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range of 1-100” … and “determine whether a given number in the range of 1-100 is prime or composite.”
This Finding Factors Freebie is what I use to teach my 4th graders how to find all the factors of “Today’s Number” which is a routine we do as part of my SMARTBoard Math Calendar. Today’s Number is always whatever day of school it is, and we make an organized factor list, starting with 1 and the number. My students become experts on prime and composite numbers, as well as the difference between factors and multiples, thanks to this daily repetition.

Now That School’s Out. What Will We Do for the Summer?
Summer is the time for fun, fun, fun! School is out no more hitting the books. The only problem is that much of what was learned during the school year is forgotten, “out of sight, out of mind.” Not so with these fun educational activities that will keep the children looking for more and not even realizing they’re learning.
I am SO thankful for the many teachers who know more than me and their willingness to share their expertise! There is no reason to reinvent the wheel! Here are some tried & true tools that have saved my time and sanity with distance learning!
Will a delayed start to kindergarten improve a child’s success in school? Many kindergartners have not experienced a full school year due to the pandemic. This re-post might help some parents and teachers in reaching what might be a more difficult than usual decision this year.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.
I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flipbook when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

This rubric provides a clear explanation to students about how to create responses to show their critical thinking. Students should be thinking critically in all subjects, but providing clear guidelines and assessing those standards can be incredibly difficult. This rubric is designed to provide a consistent set of expectations that can be referred to with any subject or with any project.
This rubric can be used in any subject area (Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies, STEM, Humanities, Art, Music, Foreign Languages, Physical Education, etc.) for any activity where students are expected to create something to show their critical thinking and understanding (reports, essays, multimedia presentations, slideshows, videos, skits, speeches, brochures, advertisements, games, picture books, magazine articles, posters, etc.).
There is great flexibility in how you use the rubric to generate grades. It can be a useful formative assignment tool to provide feedback to students about how to improve their responses. It can be used with summative assessments to evaluate student understanding.
The categories for the rubric are: * Does not meet minimum requirements (students are then required to redo the assignment with scaffolding or re-teaching as needed) * Satisfactory * Exceeds Expectations * Advanced

This Coronavirus pandemic is extremely serious and stressful, but independent reading can be part of a useful solution to children learning at home. Now is a good time to hook kids on reading because they can choose their own books according to their own interests. At the same time, they can practice previously taught reading skills and improve in many ways.
Each year, my husband reads the book “My Side of the Mountain” to his science students. As a culminating activity, the students make falcon hoods since Sam has a peregrine falcon for hunting. Take a look at some of the falcon hoods his 6th grade students made in my latest blog post.

Pupils start where indicated, make a note of the letter in the middle of the row (cross it out to keep track) and then work out the answer to the question below. They then find this answer on the top row and again make a note of the letter underneath, thus collecting the punchline ‘because they have sine and cosine to get a tan’.
