Sentences – Grammar Circles for easy and effective grammar

Product Description

Teach grammar in a creative and meaningful way. No more boring grammar.

Simplify your life and make grammar fun and effective.

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit in grammar with everything else I had to teach. I would give students grammar pages, and then we would correct them together. It was tedious, and it took forever! What’s more is that students were not learning the way I wanted them to. They wouldn’t apply what they had learned from the grammar pages and activities.

I found a solution!

Grammar Circles. Grammar Circles are very similar to literature circles in the sense that students are teaching one another grammar. It is a fun and functional way to teach and learn grammar. Although this may be done individually, it can also be completed as a group where students, through a specific process outlined in the package, teach one another grammar. They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes, directions, and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (16 pages)

Activities included focus on:

❒ the logistics of the sentence (the basic parts)

❒ the prepositional phrase

❒ the adjective phrase

❒ the adverb phrase

❒ the verbal phrase

❒ the appositive phrase

❒ the independent and subordinate clauses

❒ subjects and predicates

❒ fragments

❒ run-on sentences

❒ types of sentences

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their work and learn from one another.

For those who are from Ontario, Canada – this unit adheres to the Grade 9 English Curriculum (academic). The unit can be taught in any grade to about sentences.

Technology is part of our lives, especially in our teaching, but when we hear Distance Learning, many people make assumptions that simply aren’t true.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Writing Activities (First Day) – What About Me?”

by Connie

4th – 12th Grade

The first day of school is often filled with so much administrative detail and introductions to the class that teachers don’t get a chance to really introduce themselves to the students and vice versa. This product, What About Me?, offers teachers and students a chance to reveal their thoughts and feelings about school and themselves to each other. This is a great way for students to find out what their teachers expect from them, and for teachers to understand what impacts their students academically. Teachers should fill out their sheets ahead of time, but not hand them out to the students until they complete theirs. If there is time in class, students can start their sheets, but might feel more comfortable completing them at home. Teachers should require them to be finished within the first few days of school so they can get to know their learners as soon as possible.

Spelling Flip Book

Product Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flipbook when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

by Mark Welch

8th – 11th Grade

I prepared this Unit Plan for my first-quarter “Instructional Methods” class in my teaching credential program in 2003. It includes 10 days of detailed lesson plans, handouts, and related readings (short story, poem, newspaper article).

This Unit Plan is free because it’s INCOMPLETE. The assignment was to create detailed lesson plans only for the first 10 days of the Unit. Since I never actually taught this Unit, I never implemented plans for the entire novel.

This is a .doc file, which can be imported and edited using Microsoft Word (1997 or newer).

Free: Group and Skit Evaluation Rubric

Product Description

Group work is always tricky to evaluate because there is so much going on. In addition, as educators, we are required to give detailed feedback on students’ performances.

I created this FREE document to make the teacher’s job easier, and to allow students to be responsible for their success as well.

Self-evaluation grids are a great way to guide students in their evaluations. Students will know exactly what is expected of them and will be made responsible for their success. This package can also easily be changed to be used as peer evaluations.

This self-evaluation grid will help students as well as teachers to assess students’ group work. When students use this grid to assess their work, there are no surprises when they receive their final mark. This grid, in particular, allows the students to become organized and responsible for their individual parts.

These self-evaluation grids are also very helpful to teachers:

❒ Helps the teacher justify the final mark;

❒ Helps to identify students’ weaknesses and strengths;

❒ Helps parents and students better understand the task required;

❒ Helps teachers create rubrics for the final evaluation.

Because of formatting issues, this package was created in a PDF document, but I can easily email you a Word file to be easily modified and changed according to the individual teacher’s needs.

Parts of Speech Grammar Circles (Superhero Themed)

Product Description

Superhero themed Parts of speech Grammar Circle Unit

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit grammar in with everything else I had to teach.

They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do other than to facilitate and supervise.

Once these circles have been implemented and students know who their group members are and what they are supposed to do, it is a great prep to leave a supply teacher.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes, and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (27 pages)

Activities included focus on:

❒nouns

❒adjectives

❒verbs

❒adverbs

❒prepositions

❒conjunctions

❒putting it all together

❒correct use of pronouns

❒who and whom

❒that and which

❒who’s and whose

❒that and who

❒pronoun case

❒pronoun agreement

❒active and passive voice

❒verb tenses (present, past, future)

❒verb uses (consistency in verb tenses)

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their work and learn from one another.

Also included are free Superhero Themed Parts of Speech Posters to decorate your class.

For those who are from Ontario, Canada – this unit adheres to the Grade 9 English Curriculum (academic). The unit can be taught in any grade to learn parts of speech.

FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON – “Comparing the Protests in Hong Kong to the American Revolution!”

by MsMcMillan

8th – 12th Grade

Compare the current news of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong to the American Revolution! Your students can make connections between the causes, methods, and messages of these movements.

This activity prompts students to read two articles to learn more about the protests in Hong Kong. Then, students will complete a chart summarizing the two different movements: the American Revolution and the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

Next, students will be asked to complete a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the movements.

Lastly, students will be asked to create tweets supporting/condemning the Hong Kong protests while making connections to the American Revolution.

Use this relevant, timely resource to have students think deeply about the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong in the 2000s and the pro-democracy movement in America in the 1770s.

Let me know how this resource works for your students!
