FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Text Your Words!”

by Keep Your Chin Up
Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

This is a fun and low-prep activity you can use in your class for word work. I put our word wall words / sight words on index cards for my students to choose, and then they practice writing, “typing”, and reading the words on their iPhones.

I suggest printing on cardstock and putting these right into dry-erase pockets or ticket holders. The “C-Line Stitched Shop Ticket Holders, Both Sides Clear, 9 x 12 Inches” are available on Amazon. They are affordable and perfect for using with dry-erase markers!

Included are 4 templates:
► Black iPhone (bubbles only)
► Black iPhone with keyboard
► Gold iPhone (bubbles only)
► Gold iPhone with keyboard

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Speech Therapy Game – Build a Robot Game”

by Kathy Babineau
Pre-Kindergarten – 4th Grade

Play this fun speech therapy game and Build Unique Robots! This easy and versatile Build a Robot game is a motivator and attention holder in small group lessons. Kids have fun building their own unique robot creatures as they take turns rolling the dice and assembling their robots in this game activity. The handy chart tells players what robot parts to place on their mats. The first player to complete a robot wins. This game can be played independently by students or can be used during a small group lesson or in a speech therapy group to keep kids on task and motivated.

Kids like to build their own robots and then describe how the robots look once completed. The game often sparks imaginative minds that want to chat about what their robots are like or what powers their robots might have.

To use this, print out multiple copies of the black/white completed robot and laminate. Then print out single pages of the colored robot parts pages and the page with the dice chart. Cut apart the robot pieces and laminate. Once prepared this game can be used over and over.

To play the game you will need a die that goes up to the number 6. and a black/white robot template. Place the colored robot pieces in the center of the table. Players take turns rolling the die. Using the dice chart, the players will select a robot piece based on what they roll. For example, if you roll a 3, you get a belly. Players place the colored pieces on their black/white robot template. The first player to complete his/her robot wins.

I like to use this build a robot game in small group speech/language therapy activities. After each student answers a question, or says his/her target sound correctly, he/she may roll the dice. The game can be used with any small group lesson. This set can also be used in independent center activities.

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Homeschool Day Planner | for Pre-k, Elementary School, and Middle School”

by RoShamBo Homeschooling
Pre-Kindergarten – 8th Grade

This FREE printable homeschool day planner includes a cute template for selecting and organizing your daily activities! It makes mapping out your week super easy!

This checklist is so easy. On Sunday nights, I print out 5 of these, one for each day. As I’m thinking of what I want to do for the week, I just plug my ideas into the spaces. On the actual day, we just go through the list, checking off each activity as we go along!

There’s a reason I do 5 days at once. Search “gross motor activities for preschoolers” on Pinterest. Thousands of amazing ideas, right? It only takes 2 minutes to pick my 5 favorites and write them each on a separate checklist for the week. Up next? Fine motor activities for preschoolers. Easy.

Searching for activities the night before just isn’t as efficient. (Our time is so limited!) When I’ve tried it this way, I end up finding so many amazing activities I want to try and wasting way too much time trying to select the best one.

Features

Art Project OR Sensory Play

Let’s be realistic. Homeschool days go by SO fast. We never get through all the cool things we want to try. So this homeschool day planner is simplified to match what we can actually finish in a single day.

At first, I used to try to do an art project and a sensory play/science project on the same day… in addition to everything else. It never happened, and I just felt discouraged and overwhelmed. Both require so much setup and clean up! So my homeschool day planner recommends only choosing ONE of those activities per day. And you don’t need to choose wild messy art projects or super involved science projects every single day. I usually do one more complicated activity per week. The rest are pretty simple—painting with water outside, a sensory bin filled with different colors of dry beans, playing with slime, etc.

Practical Life Activity

With little kids, it’s important that they learn more than just academics, and explicitly naming on my schedule the practical skill I want to work on helps me remember to integrate it in a little each day. I usually do just ONE practical life skill for the week, and we work on it every day that week. In my sample, I listed “putting on shoes.” This could also be things like:

  • drinking out of an open cup without spilling
  • tying shoes
  • using a zipper
  • potty training
  • brushing own teeth
  • dialing 911, plus learning when to call and when not to (for older children)
  • learning home address and phone number
  • washing vegetables
  • set the table
  • fold a t-shirt
  • coughing and sneezing into elbow

Obviously many of these are things a kid won’t master in just one week, but having a goal to practice just one of them every day will help get your kiddo closer and closer!

Social & Emotional Learning Activity

It’s really important for kids to have “class” on social and emotional learning in order to develop emotional intelligence and become the most empathetic kids they can be. This focus in our homeschool day planner is just like the focus on a practical skill each day—having a goal and a written reminder helps keep you on track to teach beyond just academics!

For this “class,” we do things like:

  • learning emotion names
  • talking about how to appropriately react with each feeling
  • I Love You” Rituals
  • discussing how OTHERS feel and why (on a walk: “That puppy looks so happy sleeping in the sunshine. Look at that huge smile! Animals like it when it’s sunny. Remember when it was raining last week, and the puppy was all cold and soggy and trying to hide from the rain under the porch? Animals are really sad when it’s cold and rainy.”
  • activities on how to be a good friend, like sending care packages
  • practicing taking care of others
  • deep breathing exercises
  • reading books about social justice

Anything related to love (for ourselves and others!) is perfect in this category on your checklist.

How to Print

Want your pages to look just like the image above? Make sure you print out your pages borderless so they don’t have white margins.

Want to save some ink, but still have your planner look beautiful? If you print the pages WITH a white border (the default on most printers), you will still get some of the flower design, just less!

Please let me know if you have any questions prior to purchasing.

Specific Learning Disability (SLD) is a language and literacy-related disability referring to a psychological processing disorder. If focuses on understanding or using spoken or written language. Determining whether an ELL’s learning difficulties are from language or something else is a tangled web.

As teams of educators ponder how to work best with English Learners they can reflect on a many different approaches. Here is a preliminary list of considerations I offer our staff.

I hope this offers some guidance for your school teams that work with English Learners.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Place Value: Sprint to 100 game center”

by Down Under Teacher
Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

4 game boards with different graphics in a racing theme.

Here is a game I play with my class when they are ready to move from using cubes and bundling sticks to getting used to base-10 materials.

Students roll a die (0-9 works well, but a 6-sided die in fine OR shuffle and turn over the number cards from a deck). Students add that many ones to their board in the ones place. They continue to take turns and adding one’s until they can change 10 ones for 1 ten and finally 10 tens for 1 hundred.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Understanding Base Ten for Kinders and First Graders- Aligned to the Common Core”

by KinderIrick
Kindergarten – 3rd Grade

This is a fun math center where kids get practice with place value. They match up cards for numbers 10-20. The cards work on Number and Operations in Base Ten.

This math center is perfectly aligned for Kindergarten and First Grade, but it will make an excellent review for Second Grade as well.

Common Core Standards

K.NBT.A.1 Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones.

1.NBT.B.2 Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.

You can decide which skills you want them to work on. Numbers 10-20 are represented on game cards in many different ways: number (16)
tens and ones (1 ten and 6 ones)
expanded form (10+6)
ten frames
decomposing two digit numbers (16=10+6)

Through the use of these cards students will gain a thorough understanding of base ten.

There are 6 different answer sheets to choose from. The cards can be used as flash cards as well. Please download the preview for a closer look at all that this unit comes with.

There are so many different combinations of cards and answer sheets you can use this math center all year long!
