Product Description

One entire month of planning done for you – I dare you to enjoy Shakespeare.

I love teaching Shakespeare’s plays, and I want you to love it too. I’ve been teaching and improving this unit for over ten years. I have done all the thinking for you.

This unit has everything a teacher needs to teach Hamlet. I’m aware that not everyone is comfortable with Shakespeare. Because of this, I have created this unit from my years of experience teaching the play, so all of the thinking has been done for you. Just photocopy and teach. Seriously it’s that easy.
There’s no longer a need for hours of research and piecing together bits of information and activities found to teach the play.
This is a whole, complete unit, from scene summaries, important notes and annotations notes to help students understand what they are reading. I have also included an introduction to the play, a student guide, a teacher guide, quizzes, a creative assignment, and tests (all with answers and evaluation grids), and a comprehensive answer key. Everything has its place and teaches a specific skill.

The unit is appropriate for students in grades 10, 11 and 12.

The unit includes :

– An attractive, interactive, multimedia PowerPoint presentation introducing the play (17 slides)

-A Student Study Guide (with activities, Act and scene questions…) and various activities (14 pages)

The teacher Guide also includes links to the audiobook (the exact time to cue the audio), AND it includes a list of speaking roles if reading out loud in class)to help with time management and organization.

-18 pages of comprehensive scene summaries and important notes for each scene (annotations for each scene)***THIS IS A TEACHER FAVORITE!

–A creative Hamlet Guess Who? Game to help students understand the characters. (What’s fun about this game is that it can be played from the beginning of the play right to the end, and students’ answers will change depending on the act they are reading.) LOTS OF FUN!

-A comprehensive answer key for all questions and activities. (24 pages)

-Comprehension quiz on Acts 1 and 2 in Word format for easy modifications (with evaluation grid) and answer key.

-Mid-play evaluation – The Parody – creative writing and analysis (in Word format for easy modifications – with evaluation grid)

-Summary guide (highlighting the significant events from each scene with important analytical information) – Throughout my years of teaching this play, I have amounted excellent notes and annotations, listing the most significant actions throughout each scene. I have retyped these annotations to help you teach the play, so your students will understand it (and so will you). (18 pages)

FREE Fraction Activity

Looking for a great picture book to help your students understand multiplication with fractions?

Fraction concepts are often the most challenging for students to grasp and teachers to teach. On top of that, fraction operations can be even more challenging to teach because students are unable to connect the actions of fraction operations with that of whole numbers. Students need a lot of experiences to develop these skills and build a solid understanding of the concepts.

One way to help students “see” the action of the operations is by using picture books. My favorite way to teach fraction multiplication is to start with Multiplying Menace. It’s a great springboard to introducing fraction multiplication. Not only will this book help your students “see” the operation, but it will allow students to compare the effects of multiplying whole numbers with the effects of multiplying by fractions.

To accompany the book, I created an activity to help students analyze the situations in the book. Click here or on the image to the right to grab a free copy the activity sheet.

Want to know more?
Head on over to The Routty Math Teacher website and check out my latest blog post, “Teaching Fractions with Math Picture Books” to read more about Multiplying Menace and learn about Multiplying Menace Divides. Read it here!

Paragraph Writing Activity in conjunction with Frankenstein

Product Description

Paragraph Writing Activity in conjunction with Frankenstein

Very often, students have difficulty with the analysis process involved in literature. Where they not only have to analyse, but now have to apply their newfound skills to a well-developed paragraph, some students become overwhelmed with the process.

This particular activity will focus on both the analysis and writing a paragraph using the PEEL method.

Paragraph writing and analysis are two essential components in essay writing. To facilitate this process, I have created a lesson where students can become more comfortable with the revision process through modelling the proper steps from beginning to end. The lesson includes a modelling of the writing process from understanding the topic to the final draft. See preview for details

This lesson can only be used after students have read chapter 19 from the novel Frankenstein.

INCORPORATE THESE INTO A LARGER ELA PROJECT:
Looking to replace traditional book reports with a comprehensive Common Core language arts project that includes these response project ideas? Check out the BIG ELA Book Report Project FULL VERSION.

The BIG ELA Book Report Project FULL VERSION combines reading, writing, speaking, and listening tasks, which engages students and allows them to demonstrate what they know in many different ways. Each part of this project is aligned with an ELA Common Core standard.

–Reading: Students read a book of their choice from a specified genre. Then, they demonstrate comprehension and higher-level thinking by completing two response projects from the Not Your Grandma’s Book Report Bundle.

–Writing: Students also demonstrate comprehension by completing a genre-specific handout that requires knowledge of the setting, characters, plot, problem, and solution. Students are also asked to relate the book to themselves with opinion questions that require support from the book.

–Speaking: Students use their knowledge of the book and opinions with support to prepare and give a 3-5 minute book talk to persuade classmates to read the book.

-Listening: Students demonstrate active listening skills by completing a feedback form for each book talk. Students write down details from each book talk and evaluate whether they would like to read the book in the future.

I also offer a LITE version of the BIG ELA Book Report Project that is compatible with Not Your Grandma’s Book Report LITE.

Your questions are welcome, and your feedback is appreciated!

Teaching the Argument by Solving Mysteries

Product Description

Teaching the Argument by Solving Mysteries

This is a great introduction to any literature unit. It teaches students the proper approach to literary analysis, which can be used from grades 7 all the way to 12 in any levels of study.

This mini unit contains 8 lessons that teach students the proper way to form an argument. Many times students will use the right information, but they don’t quite know what to do with it. Through a series of crime scenes, students learn how to collect information (data), collect evidence, and explain how this evidence supports a logical conclusion, all while having fun. This unit teaches students skills that are needed in all literature units.
These lessons allow students to learn the importance of collecting data by taking careful notes, how to select only information that will help support a thesis (or a claim), and how to properly use the information by incorporating pertinent explanations to develop an irrefutable argument.

This is a fun way of learning the necessary skills for argumentation.
The unit contains:

–A Student Guide with 12 pages of activities and notes
–A Teacher Guide with 8 comprehensive lesson plans and activities
–An answer Key with 13 pages of answers and sample texts to help model proper format for students
A downloadable Prezi Presentation introducing the argument and how to develop it.
An end unit evaluation with answer key and evaluation grid 6 pages
Material is available as both PDF and in Word format for easy modifications

FREE MISC. LESSON – “Creating Measurable Criteria for Student Work”

by The Creative Classroom

Pre-Kindergarten – 12th Grade

As we all know, a major component of the Common Core State Standards is students being able to self assess their learning and evaluating the work they produce. Therefore, it is our job as teachers to provide students with a list of measurable criteria that they can use to self assess their progress towards a learning target. In addition, the list of measurable criteria can help you to create models of exemplary work that students can also use to self assess. This step by step handout will help you to focus on the learning target to identify essential learning and develop how students will demonstrate mastery of the learning target. You can then take these pieces of the puzzle to create clear and specific statements that describe exactly what your students needs to do to master their learning in any subject. There is also a model handout already completed to help guide you through the process of creating measurable criteria.

FREE 5-E Model Lesson Planning Tool

Want to know more about the components of a 5-E model lesson plan?

One of the best ways I have found to teach a good math lesson is through the use of the 5-E model. I love the 5-E model because it allows the students to explore and discover the content on their own before I provide additional information and strategies.

The 5-E model also allows me to facilitate the lesson through questioning and assess the students’ understanding throughout the lesson through my observations. While I regularly plan my lessons using this format, I have found it necessary to adapt the format to fit the needs of my students. With that in mind, I will add that this lesson format may take me more than one day to complete and I sometimes complete several explore and explain cycles before getting to the elaboration stage. It all depends on the students!

You can get a more detailed look at how I use the 5-E model lesson with my free lesson plan template. It includes a description of each of the five Es and activity ideas that can be used to address each component.

Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of my 5-E model lesson plan template.

– 16 “Write and Wipe” Picture Cards
– Sentence Template
– B&W Flashcards & Vocabulary Set

FOR THE COMPLETE FILE (Short “A”) CLICK HERE:
Interactive Flashcards (Short “A”)
– 32 Mini Interactive Flashcards
– 32 Vocabulary Tracing Cards
– 32 “Write and Wipe” Picture Cards
– Sentence Template
– B&W Flashcards & Vocabulary Set

ADDITIONAL FLASHCARD SETS:
Interactive Flashcards (Short “E”)
Interactive Flashcards (Short “I”)
Interactive Flashcards (Short “O”)
Interactive Flashcards (Short “U”)
Interactive Flashcards *AEIOU* (BUNDLE)

INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Print one 8.5×11 page per student (8 flashcards per page)
2) Students cut on dotted lines to make individual flashcards.
3) Students use picture cues to fill in the missing letters (mouse/apple/turtle = m / a / t)
4) Students use individual flashcard sets to “test” a partner, blending phonemes into CVC words (c / a / t = cat)

Note: If students are just beginning to learn the sounds of the letters, and are still learning how to segment and blend, you might want to cut the 8.5×11 sheets into two sets (an/at endings) and use them on two different days.

Suggested Extension:
Students read/blend the word, then draw a picture on the back of the flashcard. For more advanced students, have them write a simple sentence using the words in context.

If you’d prefer letter tiles instead of flashcards, I do have a set of “Interactive Letter Tiles” (requested by another wonderful buyer) that includes A-Z tiles, as well as a set of digraph tiles.

I love teaching poetry! I love it when my student like learning it too.

So many students dislike poetry that I wanted to create a unit just for them. This unit takes a different approach to teaching poetry all while allowing students to be critical of the songs they hear on the radio. This unit teaches the same skills as traditional poetry units do, but does it in a lighter way.

This video introduces the “Poetry Through Song” unit available for purchase.

Follow this link to preview the unit: Poetry Through Song Unit

FREE MATH LESSON – “Gold Coins Missing Numbers 0-20 FREEBIE”

by Sherry Clements

Pre-Kindergarten – 1st Grade

Gold Coins Missing Numbers 0-20 FREEBIE —

This two page freebie gives students the opportunity to practice writing numbers 0-10 on one page and 11-20 on the second page. The first and last numbers on each page are included to get the students started. Numbers are written on gold coin shapes to give motivation for the skill. A number line is included at the top of both pages to aid students in writing the numbers correctly and in order.

These pages can be laminated or put in a page protector for a math center and have students fill in the correct numbers with a dry erase marker. Then wipe the sheets off, and they are ready for another student.

They can also be used as a race to the end activity. Make two copies of the chosen sheet 0-10 or 11-20. Have two students see who can correctly fill in the numbers first without writing them backwards and making sure they are written neatly so they can be read.

I hope your students have fun with this FREE number writing activity!
