Looking for a meaningful and effective way to teach poetry? This unit is a fun way to learn and experiment with figurative language. It uses a mixture of contemporary songs and traditional poetry to teach students about themes and to help them learn the various forms of poetry. The creative, hands-on activities also focus on the importance of having a voice and using it properly.

The unit covers subjects such as: bullying, courage, standing up for yourself and for others, standing up for one’s convictions and discovering what is important to students.

This unit uses poetry to help students have a better understanding of themselves and to stand up for things they believe in.

The files are in PDF format and are zipped for convenience.

-1 set of « I HAVE, Who has? » cards to help students remember figurative language in a fun way. (1 set of instructions for the game)

LANGUAGE ARTS – “Scooping Words with Two Closed Syllables”

Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables.

Syllables can be divided by saying them orally or by using a pencil and paper. If we orally divide a word into syllables, we usually clap the word out. For example, if we orally divided the syllables of polish, we would clap out ‘pol’ and ‘ish,’ and that would be two claps. If we divided the syllables on paper, we would place a slash between the ‘l’ and ‘i’ in the word ‘pol/ish.’

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: p o l i s h. This way not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of a misplaced letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables.

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice scooping words with two closed syllables.

Simply print and cut along the guidelines. One idea is to print on card stock or on colored paper. Laminate and use them again and again and keep them in a baggie. Another option is to hole-punch a corner of each card and put them all on a ring.

This “Reading Vowel Digraph & Vowel Diphthong Syllables” unit provides 86 word lists vowel digraphs and vowel diphthongs syllable type words. Also, a master word list is included and can be used as a quick reference. A vowel digraph or vowel diphthong is one of the six types of syllables in reading. The lists in this unit include words spelled using vowel teams or vowel/consonant teams to create each vowel sound. These lists of words will help students recognize the vowel digraph or vowel diphthong patterns. Reading will become more manageable for students once they understand syllable types.

The “10 Vowel Digraph & Diphthong Activities & Games” packet includes 10 activities and games give students a fun way to learn and sort vowel digraph and diphthong syllable words. Thinking about starting a Reading Buddies program in your classroom this year? Here are some tips and tools to get things rolling!

Consider putting School-wide Reading Buddies on a staff meeting agenda.

Discuss the benefits for all students with your divisional leads and administration, and even if the seed of the idea is planted to be reassessed next year, it will give you a sense of who might be open to a pairing for this year.

Take age into consideration.

An age / grade difference of 2-3 years between buddies puts a clear boundary between who the big buddies and little buddies are.

Approach a colleague about pairing classes…

…and be realistic about whether your schedules will work! Casual conversation over lunch can often accomplish this, but it seems like our time is less our own these days! I have created this free letter and form to simplify the process:

Build Reading Buddy time into your timetable.

When ‘it’s official’ everyone knows what to expect, when. Perhaps it is alternate week familiar reading, word-work, or math skills review through games, part of character education or religious education for forty minutes. While may Reading Buddies may not appear in on the timetable your principal has to hand in to the school board, it’s important that the kids have this special time to look forward to. It could even happen over lunch!

Define expectations to both classes.

This is accomplished best if done as individual classes, as the expectations differ for the age groups in some ways. Review general expectations when they are brought together for the first few times, and provide visual reminders. Reading Buddies time can quickly look like recess if sixty kids are unsure of what the rules are, half the kids, ‘read the book already’ and have decided to hang out with someone else!

Talk to your partner class’ teacher about general and specific expectations.

I wrote general expectations in a storybook lesson format for my students, explaining to the bigger buddies (third graders) ‘This is what I am reading to your little buddies‘ (kindergarters). One of my valued TpT customers reads her class the story, then posts the pages on a bulletin board! I love that!

The basic overall purpose of learning syllable type reading is to give students 6 reading strategies to aid them in chunking longer words into short, readable parts. This Greek and Latin roots lesson combines the enjoyment of art and creativity with the rigor of vocabulary development. It is basically a mnemonic activity, designed to help students commit the meanings of the Greek and Latin stems to memory.

I made this lesson for a summer school English class made up of students with reading levels ranging from 4th to 9th grades. Classes were two hours per day. I gave them five class periods to finish. I gave extra credit for coloring. The more time they spend on the imagery, the more they are absorbing the meaning of the root.

I can’t over-state how much success I have had with this lesson. It’s ideal for visual learners but fun for everyone (and easy to grade, too!) It keeps the kids interacting with roots and stems over long periods of time. It forces them to synthesize the roots and apply their knowledge in an original way, a personal way that has meaning for them. The best part is, it is simple and doesn’t require a lot of complex input or instructions from the teacher. Just show them an example, give them the materials and the list of roots and away they go.

Research shows that vocabulary development through the mastery of Greek and Latin roots and stems is a key component to improving test scores on standardized tests such as the GRE, SAT, CST, AP exams and State standardized tests.

This is a stand-alone, free product. You don’t have to buy any of my other products to make this lesson work. If you are interested in increasing the depth, breadth, and time you students spend learning Greek and Latin roots, check out some of my companion products that complement this lesson.

Common Core Aligned
Greek and Latin roots, suffixes, and prefixes, sometimes called word stems or word forms, are part of the Common Core Standards from third grade to tenth grade.

Why is it important?
Greek roots are word parts that have meaning. They are the building blocks of thousands of English words. Chronology, polygon, bicycle, telescope, astrophysics, hyperventilate — the list goes on an on — all these words contain one or two Greek roots.

Knowledge of word roots and their meaning is important and useful for our students because it gives them the ability to decode the meaning of unfamiliar words in a variety of situations.

This unit is a package of 10 activities and games that are designed to make it easy for students to learn to read r-controlled syllable type words. There are 6 syllable types, and r-controlled is one of the six types. These syllables are called –r-controlled because the –r is in control and the vowel is out of control when sounding out the word. Fifty percent of our English language is closed syllable type words. Once a student learns this syllable type, they have a great foundation upon which to build. So it is a well worth our efforts to invest our time teaching this syllable type if we are going to have successful readers. I created this packet for my students to have fun learning closed syllable type words. There are 6 syllable types, and closed syllable is the most basic type to teach.

Scooping a word is the same as dividing the word into syllables.

Syllables can be divided by saying them orally or by using a pencil and paper. If we orally divide a word into syllables, we usually clap the word out. For example, if we orally divided the syllables of dislike, we would clap out ‘dis’ and ‘like,’ and that would be two claps. If we divided the syllables on paper, we would place a slash between the ‘s’ and ‘l’ in

the word ‘dis/like.’

So rather that placing a slash, there is another way to show the number of syllables in a word, and that is to scoop the syllables. This is how that would look: d i s I I k e. Not dividing the word with a slash avoids the look of an extra letter in the word, and it also avoids the idea of students thinking the word has only one syllable since there is just one slash. With the idea of scooping with the finger or with a pencil, students

can feel and see the scoops which in turn matches the number of syllables.

This packet contains 64 task cards that allow students to practice scooping words with one closed syllable and one vowel-consonant-e syllable.

My Summer Adventures Poster

An engaging activity to place on students’ desks when they arrive back to school after the Summer Break.

Print the poster as it is at its current size, or blow it up to a larger size. Let your students fill in their Summer Adventures. When the posters are complete, let them share their memories with their classmates. Can also be used later in the week for creative writing.

non-fictionThis is a small part of my larger TpT unit on Schindler’s List – my more in-depth unit combines the questions that are included here and adds other questions and competences:

The CCSS “lay out a vision of what it means to be a literate person in the 21st century.” Integrating film into your curriculum is an excellent way to satisfy many of the new Common Core State Standards.

TEACHER TIP:
You don’t need to show entire films, just short clips of these films, to develop competences deemed essential in the new CCSS guidelines.

INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT ARE THE FOLLOWING:

➢ A PREZI with clips from the film

➢ A multiple choice quiz with six questions and answers

➢ Vocabulary – definitions for words that are crucial for understanding the Holocaust

➢ Information on Oskar Schindler

➢ Essay questions and discussion questions

➢ Questions aligned with ELA-Literacy CCSS 8-12 – in particular with the following standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.8.1
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.8.4
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.2
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.9-10.4

I teach SCHINDLER’S LIST as a TEXTURE TEXT or a CONTEXT TEXT usually alongside THE REPUBLIC. It is an excellent film to use when studying philosophical concepts including, but not limited to, the following: morality, ethics, sacrifice, freedom, courage, and the power of hope.
