FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Story Map… like a roller coaster”

3rd – 7th Grade

Story Map- This story map is great for intermediate students who are working with more than the basic elements of plot. This includes areas for students to write the characters, setting, problem, rising actions, climax, solution, falling action, and the theme. It works really well with summarizing fiction.

When introducing this concept, I relate each element as to a roller coaster ride. (The visual of the inverted letter V helps kids remember this.) Before you get on a roller coaster, you must have the people (characters) and the place (setting). Then you’re all strapped in and getting nervous (problem). The entire ride to the top of the roller coaster is scary because of people screaming, getting higher and higher, and feeling the bumpy tracks (rising actions). Finally you get to the very top, and the ride becomes fun because you are able to relax and enjoy it (climax). At the end your fears are turned into excitement (solution) because you had fun. You learned that if you don’t take risks, you won’t have new, enjoyable experiences (theme). I know it’s kind of cheesy, but the kids really seem to connect to it and remember what each element really means.

I love teaching Shakespeare’s plays and I want you to love it too. I’ve been teaching and improving this unit for over 10 years. I have literally done all the thinking for you.

This unit has everything a teacher needs to teach Hamlet. I’m aware that not everyone is comfortable with Shakespeare. Because of this, I have created this unit from my years of experience teaching the play so all of the thinking has been done for you. Just photocopy and teach. Seriously it’s that easy.

This is a whole, complete unit, from scene summaries, important notes and annotations notes to help students understand what they are reading. This “Reading Vowel Digraph & Vowel Diphthong Syllables” unit provides 86 word lists vowel digraphs and vowel diphthongs syllable type words. Also, a master word list is included and can be used as a quick reference. A vowel digraph or vowel diphthong is one of the six types of syllables in reading. The lists in this unit include words spelled using vowel teams or vowel/consonant teams to create each vowel sound. These lists of words will help students recognize the vowel digraph or vowel diphthong patterns. Reading will become more manageable for students once they understand syllable types.

The “10 Vowel Digraph & Diphthong Activities & Games” packet includes 10 activities and games give students a fun way to learn and sort vowel digraph and diphthong syllable words. A vowel digraph is two vowels that spell one of the vowel sounds in the team such as /ea/ spells the –e sound in ‘eat’. The four diphthongs vowel teams are /ou/, /ow/, /oi/ /oy/. Together these four vowel teams create their own unique sounds. The words used in this packet target the common vowel combinations that create vowel digraphs and diphthongs. It’s a complete set of FREE alphabet clip cards. If you’ve never used clip cards as a center activity, I highly recommend them. They’re easy to put together and provide hours of learning engagement. You’ll need a package of clothespins and some bright colored cardstock paper. This file prints with black ink. Children match the uppercase letters with the appropriate lowercase letters by “clipping” the clothespins to the appropriate answers. It’s best to program the answers on the backs of the cards with a highlighter or circular stickers. This way, the center becomes self-checking. Letter knowledge is a kindergarten skill. However, there are many first graders that require additional practice . . . especially at the beginning of the school year when they are recovering from the “Summer Slump”. Additionally, many children enter first grade feeling frustrated and overwhelmed by their new grade level requirements. Providing struggling first graders with a center that they can complete at 96% to 100% accuracy builds their confidence in working independently. I allow my students to use this in class when writing a test. This is not a grammar lesson, but it will remind students about the grammar they’ve learned in the past.

Some of the reminders included:

– parts of speech
– transitional words
– quotation marks (how and when to use them)
– basic sentence structure
– spelling tips (plurals of nouns and IE rule)
– puncutaion rules (apostrophe, colon, semicolon

The other side of the page has comma rules:

– with other elements (dates, parenthetical expression, nouns in a direct address)

It also contains tips on things to avoid, such as writing a paragraph shorter than 4 sentences. And, it contains a list of things to do, such as make sure that your paragraphs contain at least 2 pieces of evidence.

Text Clue Scavenger Hunt Task Cards

As a teacher librarian I am alway looking for ways to support classroom teachers with their ELA programming. I designed this set with the library in mind, since that is where I work. You can easily use this in your classroom. The purpose of this scavenger hunt is to familiarize/support students in using text clues to determine the subject of a book.

This pack includes 24 scavenger hunt cards and a printable answer sheet allowing students to record up to twelve answers.

This is a print and go resource that can easily be used to help you gather data on your students and their ability to use text clues, before, during or after teaching. The cards can easily be adapted to use more one on one with struggling students, simply place several books in front of them and ask them to identify the book being described on the task card. If the student struggles with the text clue and chooses the wrong one, asking them why, will give you a bunch of information that you can use in helping that student better use text clues offered on covers, in pictures or in words.

At $2, this is a must have, easy to use resource!

Benefits of a personal alphabet book – a lesson from my Reading Recovery days

Why go to the trouble of creating a personal Alphabet Book for your students, instead of having everyone in the class work through each letter together? It sounds like a lot to manage, but creating links to a child’s life early in literacy learning is worth the confidence and gains they make later.

When I taught Reading Recovery to grade one students early in the school year, creating a personal alphabet book was one of the first things we did together when we started lessons. It wasn’t until seven years in to my teaching career that I understood the benefits of a personal alphabet book, and I have Dr. Marie Clay and my Reading Recovery teacher leaders to thank for that.

In Literacy Lessons Part Two, Dr. Clay explains:

The alphabet book is merely a record of what is known with spaces for what is ‘yet to be learned’ That gives the child a sense of the size of the task and a feeling of control over his own progress. It also provides a location to return to when a troublesome letter, still being confused, turns up. (p37)

She explains that children do not generally learn to identify letters by name or sound in alphabetical order and that identifying a letter by name or sound is equally useful for a child early on, as it is most effective to teach both name and sound together.

When children have one word for each letter that he or she knows for sure makes that letter sound, they use it as an anchor, a concrete example to hold all other words against for comparison.

When they have their own sound alphabet that they have created from the words most meaningful to them, the words that pop into their minds with the initial letter sounds and that association gives them confidence that they know that particular sound. It gives them the confidence to ‘spit’ that sound out when they see an unknown word on a page when they are reading, or put down that first letter when attempting to write a word they have never attempted before.

The personal alphabet book is the ultimate, at-a-glance reference guide. It is meaningful to each child, because that child constructed it from people and things that are meaningful to them already. The connections are already in place.

The key to the effectiveness of a personalized alphabet book is in its construction. It must be done slowly but with enthusiasm, following the child’s lead, reviewed often and used as reference.
