Creating Characters in Creative Writing

In creative writing, it is very important to create strong and dynamic characters. In addition, characters within a story need to have strong motivation, and their interactions with other characters need to add interest and appeal to the reader.

Included within this resource is a visual reminder to students in creative writing when it comes the time to incorporate characters in their work.

Also included is a worksheet that will guide students in creating a strong main character and a second worksheet for orchestrating dynamic and plot-driven secondary characters that will keep the reader interested until the end of the story.

Spelling Flip Book

Product Description

The Spelling Flip Book is designed to help young learners become familiar with spelling rules and to incorporate them into their work.

Students can color and personalize their flip books to enhance the spelling learning experience.

I always like encouraging my students to use their flip books as reference sheets when they are working to promote good spelling habits. The goal is that eventually, by using the flip book when working, the student will begin to remember common errors made in the past and correct them. I have had much success with this strategy in my classes.

I’ve also included a color copy and an answer key – a total of 18 pages.

Poetry Unit

Product Description

Poetry Unit for Senior Students (Bundled)

I love poetry! I love reading it, I love teaching it, and I love the discussions I can have with my students because of it. May students (and some teachers) dislike poetry because they think it’s too difficult. I once had a student tell me that poetry was like a “code” that needed to be unlocked. Cringe!! Some poems are meant to be analyzed. Some poems and meant to sound beautiful, and some poems are meant to be simple and enjoyed for what they are. This unit has a little of all of those things.

Students love this poetry unit. It is a complete unit with no prep required on the teacher’s part. This 2 week unit includes a student guide, 12 detailed lesson plans, a multimedia presentation (no internet connection required), a complete answer key with annotated poems (this is a teacher favorite!) , and an end of the unit evaluation with answer key.

Just print it and teach it. It really is that easy.

This bundle includes individual lessons devised to teach students the importance of:

• Figurative language (its uses and effects)

• How to read poetry

• The importance of rhythm

• The importance of tone and attitude in a poem

• Types of poetry

• How to analyze poetry

• How to appreciate poetry (even when you don’t understand it)

This unit’s focus is the analysis of poetry and teaches students how to make inferences, which is a skill they must learn for their other subjects as well.

Poems include authors such as Emily Dickinson, Dorothy Parker, Thomas Gray, Lord Alfred Tennyson, Alfred Noyes, T.S. Eliot, Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Frost, and Walt Whitman.

The unit has been conceived to last 15 days – with 65 minute periods (although they are easy to modify).

The unit includes:

1 – The teacher guide (Contains 12 comprehensive lesson plans to teach the poems included in the unit. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO TEACH THIS UNIT HAS BEEN DONE FOR YOU. )

2 – The student package (Contains students’ notes, poems, and questions) (28 pages)

3 – The answer key includes annotated poems and answers to all student activities, as well as an example of paragraph developing a theme in poetry (saving you time).

4 – Included is a test with multiple choice questions as well as one development question. All answers are included. (Word format for easy changes)

5 – 2 PowerPoint presentations – one multimedia presentation to introduce the unit (17 slides) and the second to reinforce the use of imagery and symbolism (19 slides) – NO INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED

A total of 68 pages + 36 slides are included in this package.

This unit is complete and does all of the thinking for you. All you need to do is to print out and photocopy the student package, and you’re set.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “Research Graphic Organizer: Better than a Notecard”

by Spark Creativity

7th – 10th Grade

Want students to avoid plagiarism when using research in class assignments? The struggle is real, for you and them. But I’ve made you something to help.

Go one up on the traditional notecard by giving students copies of this graphic organizer to keep track of their research and attribute sources easily. A notecard just isn’t much of a guide, but this handout is!

On the page, students have room to write down...

  • Quotations (with page numbers!)
  • Big Ideas (with page numbers!)
  • Takeaways in their own Words
  • Full Citation Information for their Source

By having students use these instead of notecards, and then having them put away all their source materials before writing, you give them the best chance possible of avoiding plagiarism and keeping their research nicely organized.

This is a brand new product for me, so I hope you’ll consider leaving a review. It’ll earn you credits for future purchases, make me soooo happy to have your opinion, and help other teachers understand whether this is the right activity set for their classroom. Hamlet Unit No prep

Product Description

NEW LOOK – This resource now has a new format. Please note that MOST evaluations are still available in Word format for easy modifications.

One entire month of planning done for you – I dare you to enjoy Shakespeare.

I love teaching Shakespeare’s plays, and I want you to love it too. I’ve been teaching and improving this unit for over ten years. All of the thinking has been done for you. I love annotating my plays and books. I’ve taken all of the annotations made in my play over the years and incorporated them in a guide to help you guide students and help students understand. Many people (including teachers) get overwhelmed with Shakespeare because of the language. This unit has been created with the student in mind. The activities are thorough, but simple enough for students to understand and enjoy the play.

This unit has everything a teacher needs to teach Hamlet. Just photocopy and teach. Seriously it’s that easy. There’s no longer a need for hours of research and piecing together bits of information and activity sheets you don’t know what to do with.

This is a whole, complete unit, from scene summaries, important notes and annotations notes to help students understand what they are reading. I have also included an introduction to the play, a student guide, a teacher guide with detailed lesson plans, quizzes, a creative assignment, and tests (all with answers and evaluation grids), and a comprehensive answer key. Everything has its place and teaches a specific skill.

The unit is appropriate for students in grades 10, 11 and 12.

-A Teacher Guide (with detailed, comprehensive lessons, unit plan, and additional notes to guide students.) -9 pages and 17 complete lessons. The teacher Guide includes journal and discussion prompts and list of speaking roles if reading out loud in class)to help with time management and organization.

-18 pages of comprehensive scene summaries and important notes for each scene (annotations for each scene)***THIS IS A TEACHER FAVORITE!

A creative Hamlet Guess Who? Game to help students understand the characters. (What’s fun about this game is that it can be played from the beginning of the play right to the end, and students’ answers will change depending on the act they are reading.) LOTS OF FUN!

Wuthering Heights Student Workbook

Product Description

Wuthering Heights Student Workbook contains everything a teacher needs to teach Bronte’s novel. Instead of the boring question and answer format, the Student Workbook prompts students’ ideas about characters, asks them to comment on significant quotes, and to notice some of the essential techniques used by the author such as symbolism, allusions, themes, etc. in each of the chapters. I have created this resource for my own classes, and students love the meaningful format. Instead of writing information about themes, symbolism, characterization, etc. on separate sheets apart from the chapter questions, everything is integrated in a simplified way.

In addition, a comprehensive answer key is also provided for the teacher. You now have all of the flexibility needed for your lesson plans with all of the work provided for you.

More specifically, the Student Workbook contains work on (42 activity pages):

· Important information from each chapter

· Setting description and symbolism

· Characterization (you can see the characters develop as the students’ read)

· Gothic elements

· Symbolism

· Themes

· Supernatural occurrences

· Significant quotes

· Narration

· Allusions

· Sociogram (to show characters’ relationships)

· Inferencing questions to further students’ understanding

· Family tree (to help students remember who is who)

· Conflicts

· Literary techniques used by the author

· Characterization chart

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON – “FREE “Just Give the Word” Worksheet/Team Activity/Game, Print-and-Teach Fun”

by Laura Randazzo

7th – 10th Grade

Know that awkward moment when you’ve finish a lecture early, all questions have been answered, and there’s still – yikes! – 10 minutes left in the period? Or do you have one of those classes that seems to finish everything about 15 minutes earlier than all of your other sections?

The solution is to keep ‘em busy until the end of the hour with fun and meaningful activities. This handy “Just Give the Word” print-and-teach worksheet was built to help fill all available class time. The handout can be used as an in-class or homework assignment, substitute teacher materials, or game/contest sheet. A completed example is also included for teacher and student reference.

As a game, place students in teams of two or three and give one sheet to each team. Then, announce the letter you have chosen (pick a common one, like “e,” “s,” or “t”) and the amount of time (anywhere from 5 to 12 minutes) you’re giving teams to work on their answers. You could announce that the team with the highest number of word points will win the sole prize or, even better, announce that any team scoring more than, say, 50 word points will win an extra credit point/a piece of candy/homework pass/whatever. (For lower-level classes, I would give teams 5 minutes to work and then allow the use of a dictionary and/or thesaurus for the remaining contest time.)

Teaching the Argument by Solving Mysteries

Product Description

Teaching the Argument by Solving Mysteries

This is a great introduction to any literature unit. It teaches students the proper approach to literary analysis, which can be used from grades 7 all the way to 12 in any levels of study.

This mini unit contains 8 lessons that teach students the proper way to form an argument. Many times students will use the right information, but they don’t quite know what to do with it. Through a series of crime scenes, students learn how to collect information (data), collect evidence, and explain how this evidence supports a logical conclusion, all while having fun. This unit teaches students skills that are needed in all literature units.

These lessons allow students to learn the importance of collecting data by taking careful notes, how to select only information that will help support a thesis (or a claim), and how to properly use the information by incorporating pertinent explanations to develop an irrefutable argument.

This is a fun way of learning the necessary skills for argumentation.

The unit contains:

A Student Guide with 12 pages of activities and notes

A Teacher Guide with 8 comprehensive lesson plans and activities

An answer Key with 13 pages of answers and sample texts to help model proper format for students

A downloadable Prezi Presentation introducing the argument and how to develop it.

An end unit evaluation with answer key and evaluation grid 6 pages

Material is available as both PDF and in Word format for easy modifications

Parts of Speech Grammar Circles (Superhero Themed)

Product Description

Superhero themed Parts of speech Grammar Circle Unit

One of the biggest challenges I had in my English classes was how to fit grammar in with everything else I had to teach. I would give students grammar pages, and then we would correct them together. It was tedious, and it took forever! What’s more is that students were not learning the way I wanted them to. They wouldn’t apply what they had learned from the grammar pages and activities.

I found a solution!

Grammar Circles. Grammar Circles are very similar to literature circles in the sense that students are teaching one another grammar. It is a fun and functional way to teach and Learn grammar. Although this may be done individually, it can also be completed as a group where students, through a specific process outlined in the package, teach one another grammar. They also correct the work together, so the teacher has very little to do other than to facilitate and supervise.

Once these circles have been implemented and students know who their group members are and what they are supposed to do, it is a great prep to leave a supply teacher.

The package includes:

1) A Student Packet – which contains the Literature Circle directions, the notes, and activities, and a “Mark Calculation” page to keep track of their marks. (27 pages)

Activities included focus on:

-nouns

-adjectives

-verbs

-adverbs

-prepositions

-conjunctions

-putting in all together

-correct use of pronouns

-who and whom

-that and which

-who’s and whose

-that and who

-pronoun case

-pronoun agreement

-active and passive voice

-verb tenses (present, past, future)

-verb uses (consistency in verb tenses)

2) A teacher Guide with easy to follow instructions on how to organize the Grammar Circles.

3) The Answer Key – devised to allow students to correct their work and learn from one another.

Also included are free Superhero Themed Parts of Speech Posters to decorate your class.

For those who are from Ontario, Canada – this unit adheres to the Grade 9 English Curriculum (academic). The unit can be taught in any grade to learn parts of speech.
