FREE MATH LESSON – “Percent of a Number Escape Room Activity – FREE CHALLENGE”

by Lindsay Perro

6th – 8th Grade

This activity is a FREE sample challenge to give you a look inside the Math Escapes line of resources.

Students will be given 10 percent problems to solve. They will locate the card in the envelope that contains their answer and lay it on top of the question on the challenge page. When finished, they will need to preform the indicated operation(s) with their answers in order to reveal the code.

Also included is a hint card, envelope label and answer key.

About Math Escapes :
Math Escapes provide students with a collaborative way to review math skills. Each escape includes eight challenges that require students to use specific skills to find codes that will unlock each puzzle.

What makes Math Escapes different?
Math Escapes do not require the challenges to be completed in any particular order. In order for students to “escape” they simply have to find all 8 codes. This allows for (a) differentiation, (b) removal of challenges for time and (c) the ability for you to only make one copy of each challenge because as groups finish one challenge their next one can be whatever is available.

What is included in each Math Escape activity?
⇢ CCSS and TEKS standard alignment
⇢ Four pages of escape directions
⇢ A digital lock option
⇢ Links to locks/boxes to purchase
⇢ An “unpacking” video where I walk you through prep and setup
⇢ Detailed puzzle teacher information
⇢ 8 challenges with prep instructions and materials
⇢ Hint cards for each challenge (PDF format and EDITABLE PPT format)
⇢ Group code sheet
⇢ Student workbook
⇢ Photos that show each challenge prepped
⇢ End of escape signs and a sign template
⇢ Prize ideas
⇢ Answer keys

Materials Needed
You do not need to spend money on locks and boxes (although that option and links to materials are included). You can simply use manila folders or the included digital lock.

How can we promote a growth mindset in math?

The end of the school year provides a natural opportunity for students to reflect on the year and the work they have done. This classroom freebie includes 8 self-reflection cards that promote a healthy mathematical mindset. The discussion cards can be used round-robin style, as a whole class discussion activity, or as journal prompts. Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of the pack.

FREE Critical Thinking Challenges

What quick tasks can I use on a regular basis to promote critical thinking?

Logic puzzles help students develop solid critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the early grades and are a great way to engage students. In addition, they are fun and provide lots of opportunities for students to share what they are thinking and how they determined the solutions. Weight Logic puzzles do exactly that and they reinforce algebraic thinking at the same time.

To complete the weight logic puzzles, students use the sum of the symbols shown on the scale to determine the value of each symbol. For many students, this task seems simple. You guess and check the values until you find a combination that works. But that level of thinking is just the beginning. The real critical thinking comes in when students use strategies, other than guess and check, to determine the value of each fruit.

FREE MATH LESSON – “Daily Math Warm Ups Sampler FREEBIE”

by I Love 1st Grade by Cecelia Magro

1st Grade

Daily Math Warm Ups are an easy way to get your students brains ready for math in 1st grade. This pack has 10 slides (1 week worth of lessons) as well as a practice page that corresponds with the day. Simply project and teach!

This freebie is a great way to check out my product line before buying.

We do Math Warm-ups every day before we begin our math lesson. They are a review of a variety of math skills based on the standards, that are completed whole group. After we finish our warm-ups, we are ready to begin our lesson of the day.

Since the lessons are done whole group, it is best to project the day’s warm up so everyone can see. You can project it from your computer or print it out and project it using your document camera.
Students solve problems on white boards. They can work in table groups, individually or with their elbow partner. You may also choose to use these as a small group intervention – whatever best fits the needs of the students you teach!

After you complete the two pages of the day, there are optional follow-up practice sheets that you may use as extra practice or as an assessment to see which students mastered the skills reviewed. Based on results, you can then teach small groups to review or enrich math knowledge.

These easy to use and rigorous warm-ups are a simple way to get your students ready to do math!

As always, please ask questions before purchasing. Thank you so much!♥

FREE Math Talk Questions Poster

What questions do I ask to encourage math talk?

Creating a classroom where students are able to effectively use math talk during a classroom discussion can be challenging. Many of our
students do not know how to communicate their mathematical ideas and strategies using key math vocabulary and concepts. As teachers, we play an important role as we help students identify their thinking processes and build new knowledge by connecting to ideas and concepts that they already understand.
The Open-Ended Questions poster includes questions to promote mathematical communication in the classroom. You can use these questions to expand a conversation or to get one started. Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of the poster.

FREE Math Test Review Printable

Looking for a different way to review math problems?

The Rock ‘n’ Roll strategy encourages students to explore the different aspects of the problem-solving process when reviewing math problems. This is a great strategy for reviewing test questions or reviews that have multiple choice answers. This strategy works best for
reviewing a few problems, maybe the most missed ones from an assessment or review, but it’s very effective.

FREE Mathematical Discourse Resource

Looking for a strategy to encourage mathematical discourse in your classroom?

The “Who’s Correct?” strategy allows students the opportunity to evaluate the mathematical thinking of others and either agree or disagree with the person’s response. What I love about this strategy is that students do not just solve the problem, they must select a correct, or incorrect, response and provide a justification for the thinking of another. See the example above.

Here’s how to use this strategy:
1. Create two responses to a problem (consider using a frequently missed test item).

2. Ask students to respond to the “Who’s Correct?” question and give a justification in pictures, words, or numbers.

3. Have students debate who’s response is correct (or incorrect) using appropriate models and mathematical vocabulary.

Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of my “Who’s Correct?” images. To use them, insert them into PowerPoint slides and then add your own text. You can read more about how to use the “Who’s Correct?” strategy with your students here.

FREE Math Vocabulary Activity

Looking for a critical thinking activity to help your students with math vocabulary?

The “Vocabulary Dominoes” activity requires students to compare and contrast terms, as well as, look for, analyze, justify, and communicate about relationships among the terms.

Here’s how it works:
1. Group students in groups of three. Assign students to be Student 1, 2, or 3. Note: This activity works best with at least 16 dominoes for a group of three.
2. Students spread out the face-down cards.
3. Each student takes 4 dominoes. Place the remaining cards in a face-down stack.
4. Student 1 turns over one of the remaining cards to use as the starter domino.
5. In turn, each student tries to connect one of the words on his/her domino to an end and justify the connection. If no connection is made, the student takes a card from the extra pile and tries to make a connection. If no connection can be made, the turn is lost.
6. The first student to place all of his/her dominoes is the winner.

Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of my “Vocabulary Dominoes” template. To use the download: Insert the image into a Word document or PowerPoint slide. Just add a text box with each word you want to add and place it in the center of each half of the domino.
Want to know more?

FREE MATH LESSON – “FREE: Finding the GCF & LCM Using a Venn Diagram for Fractions and Algebra”

by Scipi – Science and Math

5th – 9th Grade

This 8 page free resource begins with the definitions for the math words factor, greatest common factor and least common multiple, and continues by explaining and illustrating what a factor tree is and how to construct and use a Venn Diagram as a graphic organizer to find the least common multiple.

Also incorporated into this free resource is how to use the two circle graphic organizer to factor out the Greatest Common Factor for polynomials or algebraic terms. A detailed example is provided to show how this same process can be used in algebra.

One of the practice pages is entitled “What’s Missing?” and requires the student to read a Venn Diagram to find the two missing numbers, their factors, the LCM and the GCF. A half page of three blank two circle Venn Diagrams is included.

What if there are three numbers? A three circle Venn Diagram would be used. This is fully shown in detail followed by a student practice page. A half page of blank, three circle Venn Diagrams is added to the resource so that the students can practice.

This resource is an effective and valuable tool when teaching fractions. It is also applicable and helpful in algebra when students are asked to find the LCM or GCF of a set of algebraic terms such as: 25xy, 40xyz. (LCM = 200xyz; GCF = 5xy) or when they must factor out the GCF from a polynomial such as 6x2y3 + 9xy2. An answer key is included.

FREE Editable Task Sheet Template for Math Stations

Looking for a quick template to use to create a standardized task sheet for math stations?

One of the ways I like to manage and organize my math stations is by creating a standard game directions page to include with any game that I use, i.e. card and dice games, board games, etc. Taking the time to create these from the start makes it easier for students to locate the directions and get started right away. On the game sheet, I include the following: Concept/Skill, Number of Players, Materials, Objective, and Procedure.
To help you organize your stations, I’ve created an editable freebie task sheet for you!
Here’s how to use it:
1.) Download the file from Google Drive.
2.) Open the PowerPoint file in Microsoft PowerPoint.
3.) Insert text boxes and add text to create the task sheet. Be sure to add a title!

Note: Hello Literacy’s “Hello Doodle Print” font is used in the template. The clipart is courtesy of Krista Wallden.
Click here or on the image above to grab a free copy of my editable task sheet. Enjoy!
